While most of us would agree that L42's earlier albums are better, these later RCA efforts do contain some excellent tracks. Someone posted yesterday that Her Big Day was their 'skip' track from Guaranteed, but this is possibly my favourite on the album. It's got a funky upbeat tempo that I feel is lacking from many of the tracks the album. I also enjoy With A Little Love - often a forgotton gem, IMHO - and Seven Years contains some great singing from Mark and lovely harmonies between him and Mike. However, the less said about The Ape, the better. Here's a thought worthy of discussion - I think that the lyrics are the weakest aspect of The Ape, so how would it have sounded as an instrumental? Some of L42's best tracks are instrumentals, and I quite like the bass and drums on The Ape - it's just a shame when Mark starts to sing! Forever Now is also an album containing some quality songs too. I personaly like Model Friend, All Over You (this one has to be played LOUD!) and Billy's Gone (although the version on the Resurgence album is better) as much as tracks off SITL and TC. I may be crucified for saying that my least favourite track is FN itself - and what the hell was going on with the Porky Rides Again Remix?!?!?! Although the earlier albums are superior in many ways, and due to the fact that Phil and Boon had left too, these albums are an essential part of the L42 catalogue and demonstrate a willingness to attempt different musical approaches according to the current trends at the time. All of this, of course, is just my opinion, and I would love to hear people agree or disagree with me - this is what the digest is for after all. Someone else suggested a top 10 crap L42 list - I'll start with The Ape and The Chant has Begun. Cheers Steve ps - I think that The Chinese Way and Hot Water - although hugely popular - are also far from L42's best. *************************************************************************************** This e-mail is confidential and may well also be legally privileged. The last time i said I didn't like True Colours that much I got my head bitten off, but tracks like 'Overtime', 'A kinder eye', 'She cant help herself', 'If you were mine', and my favourite 'With a little love' make me decide pretty quickly. I think this album is pretty close to being L42's most Jazzy album, and I think thats why I like it. Has many of you Levelheads read the Definitive Biography? Ive read it twice now and its a good read, any one got anything to say about it? Cheers Tavs the tiny bass player STANDARD DISCLAIMER: This message is confidential. I know absolutely nothing about drumming, but I do know what I like to hear, and I much preffered L42 when Phil was on drums. It really all depends on what style of music you are in to. I thought SATS was a great album, and it suited Garys style, I don't think that Phil could have carried it off in the same way - the 'rockier' style that the band were obviously wanting to create. Phils style was definately more funky, and having seen both Phil and Gary playing, I must say that I wasn't that impressed with Garys style on the older tunes. I would not, in any way, say that one drummer was better than the other - indeed, just different . I think that Phil says on 'Live at Wembley' - "There's a good bit coming", and then he says "Now!!" he was probably trying to make sure that the camera didn't miss his fab drumming during a gap in 'Hot Water'. Mark once said in an interview that he had to wear tape on his thumb because he had built up a rather nasty callous on it from his constant 'slapping' - that's his story, Alex - and he's sticking to it. It's a fusion of jazz, funk, lounge and 60s cult TV themes with deliberately cheesy vocal performaces. In many ways they were the 90s version of Pearl & Dean. The music exudes the band's sense of humour but they are damn serious musicians. This first album is mainly instrumentals and as Nigel says, it's well worth a listen. I think they used to go by the name Boys Wonder but i'm not 100% sure - anyone? Both have ferocious chops, but where Phil was very subtle (reminded me of a funkier Stewart Copeland), Gary is definately a serious jazz-fusion (read, ornate and aggressive) player. I was surprised when he joined because the oversmplification of his playing I assumed would bore him. The only track tht ever seemed to really fit his sensibilites was 'If you were mine' (my fave from Guarenteed), and one track is not enough to keep one interested I would think. Strangely enough, both were mostly influenced by non-drummers: Phil loved the lyricism of folks like John Colrane and Eric Dolphy, and Gary (who is also a solid keyboardist) was influencd by folks like Keith Jarret and Chick Corea. z -- joseph estevao arruda | zeruch.net (soon) zeruch @ precog.com | sourceforge.net z @ godfuckingdamnit.com | cryptome.org $kernel panic cannot mount /dev/caffeine ------------------------------ Subject: Mps / Cd audio files From: "Richard Maybury" Date: Wed, 10 Jan 2001 20:23:24 -0000 Howdy Folks, Is it true that the program "Adaptec Deluxe CD creator" allows you to convert mp3s into cda files, so you can play them on a car stereo for example ? I noticed that Phil's disc was listed at the old price of $99, not the $39 reduced price I paid. The website currently has it at $89. Photos - Share your holiday photos online! http://photos.yahoo.com/ ------------------------------ Subject: From: "Mario Angeli" Date: Wed, 10 Jan 2001 21:38:53 -0000 I really agree with this! (the response that is). 'Guaranteed' I always saw as a bit of a 'recovery' album for L42 (and I too am a fan of the earlier albums first and foremost), but 'Her Big Day' always bored me stupid - it plods along like it's wearing wellies full of cement. There are very few L42 tracks that make me reach for the 'skip' button on the CD remote, but this one does it every time - it seems like a bit of a filler to me. It's good to see some different views. I'm a fan of feisty Level 42 tunes, with driving basslines and lively keyboards. I felt Her Big Day and Set me Up were good examples of that. I liked the fact that on Set Me Up Mike's vocal was lower, it showed he had a bit of range and made a refreshing change to the predictable higher sounding vocals. Her Big day also made it on the live set to the Guaranteed tour so it must have had something going for it !! I'm no music expert, I have trouble playing the triangle for goodness sake. I can only go on what i feel for the music. Guaranteed seemed to be a more darker album than previous ones. The energy of World Machine, RITF and to some extent SATS seems to be lost on Guaranteed. There were different writers on Guaranteed and for me it showed. Then came Forever Now, the energy was back so too were the driving basslines and the lively innovative keyboards. Guaranteed was described by Neil (above) as a recovery album. If it was then it did'nt recover the band at all. It was the album that set Level 42 back. It was going to be very difficult anyway, the band were going through quite a transition. Maybe Guaranteed's darker feel is a symbol of that period in L42's history. What i do remember of Guaranteed with great pleasure was the Guaranteed tour. That's why Forever Now felt so good. They were back, with some of the original gusto and energy. Just listen to The Sunbed Song and you'll feel that energy. Level 42 can make some great slower tunes too. But can She Can't help herself or A Kinder eye compare to Why are you leaving, Leaving Me Now, It's Over, the underrated jazzy title track of Staring at the Sun or Romance on FN. I don't think so. I hope I'm not being too pushy on the digest but I would like to hear from other Levelheads what they think of Guaranteed, the album. Do you think the album contributed to the bands demise in popularity?
