You`re in good company. We`ve had the pleasure of exchanging emails before - round about Christmas time re- Schmod, no gigs in the West Midlands just yet, but I`ll keep you informed. I have a copy of The Sun Goes Down 7" complete with colour sleeve for sale or trade if anyone is interested. Any offers considered (with the exception of sexual ones - I`m a married man!!!). If you're getting buzzing off the strings it sounds like the bass needs setting up...... get the shop to do that as well. >2 - What amp do i need (I am never going to gig properly, just jam with a >few mates indoors For faffing around in a garage get something 75 - 100 watts. I only took lessons to sort out my theory so I could do session work. All my technique was sat in my bedroom (not doing my homework) listening to "The Early Tapes" and "Level 42". Then I progressed on to Tackhead, King Crimson and beyond. Teachers are a funny breed and will have you doing scales, that's the way they make easy money. Scales come within time, it took me ages. As for solid technique listen to records and jam with as many as your mates as possible. Learning to groove with a drummer is much more satisfying than C minor scales over two octaves. >4 - I did have some lessons but the guy told me that slap was out, >only >used in the 70's and all he wanted me to do was learn >scales .....up your >arse teacher. Another tuppence worth: Mike (Chadwick) Lindup, as the De Lata guy announced him - could be him getting mixed up with Roland Chadwick, he is the guitarist in Post Pop Federation. The "Brazilian" language is Potuguese, De Lata are Portuguese. The band were pretty good on Radio 1 although I thought the lead singer sounded nervous and off key. Mikes backing vocals were excellent, perhaps he should take the lead in more songs! Nuff said John PS I can't sing, I can't play bass/keyboards, I can't use big words, I like L42 very much, I also like Bob Marley, John Lennon, Sting, Simply Red and I will now crawl back into my quiet corner and whisper the L42 whoa-ho concert chant to myself and wait for the re-releases. Oh yes...a big hello to all my friends on the digest and from the concerts - have we had some fun over the years!!!! ------------------------------ Subject: MI2 From: Jimzgig @ aol.com Date: Tue, 30 May 2000 08:08:45 EDT Hello all, I don't want to give too much away here, but there is a very interesting level 42 reference in the new Mission Impossible movie. It's so obvious it makes you wonder if someone involved with the film was an ardent fan. Andromeda Heights is Prefab Sprout's newest album. (Released in 1997). It is nowhere near the standard of Jordan The Comeback, Steve McQueen, Swoon or From Langley Park to Memphis IMHO but much better than Protest Songs. They recently released a double CD of about 38 of their best tracks on it including a couple I hadn't heard b4 and I have all their work. About a few months ago, I picked up "In The Hands Of The Inevitable" by The James Taylor Quartet. Definitely one of the best jazz funk/acid jazz cds I've heard in a long time!! Every single track is killer (even the Led Zep cover), and Allison Limerick's vocals add a unique spalsh of flava to the proceedings. This cd gets plenty of play in my cd player. If you like Incognito and The Brand New Heavies, then definitely pick it up and check it out. Well worth the $$$. Keep it funky! But I have experienced negatives - one of my band members dislikes it, (but he's the drummer so that doesn't matter j/k), while others go - wow how do you play so fast so painfully I have to break away from the answer of - 'hey its just natural - I'm so good' to it really isn't as fast as it looks-I guess like mark says - its a question of LH RH coordination. My brother was taught by his bass teacher to play slap - I don't know - maybe he was the lucky one! On the subject of bass techniques, on Over There mark's playing bass chords I think - he seems to play them differently than the way I've been taught to - it looks almost as if he's holding a pick, I don't know. Just to let anyone looking for a new bass, I've got a graphite neck Status Energy 4 string, very good condition - see it advertised at www.bassgear.com. My asking price is different from that on the sale board - £400 with flight case. E mail me if interested. I'm afraid it has to go to finance a Jaydee, so I guess I'll be leaving the statusgraphite club for a while..... BTW - sorry to plug something I'm selling on the digest, and go a bit off topic to whoever may be bothered by it - just thought they might be some members interested, and hey mark king did play status basses.... Hit that scroll bar! I am really interested to know people's favourite level songs and, more importantly, why. I'm just curious, really. Rather than cause affray on the digest (some not able to understand free speech) or tie it up with what others have discussed, please feel free to e-mail me at chriskdoney @ hotmail.com I would use the digest to discuss my favourites, but I can do without the stress!!!!! I did make that request back in digest # 97 (obligatory Level 42 content) Micheal Monsen, you are forcing me to digress, but here goes: 1) You have got me all wrong. I picked on the first digester (in this case AG) who I felt was digressing too far of the Level 42 theme. I got e-mail support from a good number of people backing up my view on this matter. I'm not the digest policeman and don't intend to be. I do think I made my point and don't feel the need to chase up digesters who stray ( your example---Jenny and Lolita ) . Case closed.(Truth be, I'm getting sick of all the small closed minds out there) 2) Richard Menditta and James Ross expressed a similar point of view to mine in Digest # 95. Put your glasses on and go back and read their comments. 3) I can take flak as well as dish it out. But its got to prove me wrong and have some reasoning behind it. And that leaves me the right to answer back if I so choose.I don't see any of that in your dialogue. 4) I know some people feel the digest can stray as far as it wants. Others , like me, don't feel the same. I know...... I'm way off the track here, but Micheal invited my comment on this matter. I suggest you blame him. 5) I've already apologised to all the sensitive types out there (Digest # 94 ). Why apologise to AG? For berating him about his posting which digressed to a whole lot of other groups. Hell.! For expressing my position on the whole matter?. If AG's original posting was aimed at a couple of friends, then I didn't know that, because he didn't say so. I could have picked on someone else. He just happened to be there on the digest when I looked at it.Was my language too forceful do you think? Well I apologise for that , but here in OZ we say what we feel. However, AG claims These are AG's words, not mine.(Digest # 92) What a load of Bullshit. I've got the same right to say I represent a similar portion of digesters. 6) I've personally e-mailed some people who took offense at my comments to get my point across without cluttering the digest. 7) I've not got a superiority complex because I have a go at someone.Come on Micheal! What a load of shit! 8) Lets just stop this discussion, as now, I'm getting the blame for digressing. To hell with it, I will comment no more on this topic. And I mean no more. But will someone answer my question about the Level fest? Don't worry though, I've still got my shed Dobbo - grove till the sun goes down >> I'm not a "real" musician, but I could tell you that, in a way, that bass teacher was "sorta" right. Slap is overrated, but I get the feeling he's from the OLD school of bass players who just plucked thump thump thump. If you look at it, slapping is just another way to go thump thump thump, one note at a time, using a thumb instead of a finger. So, he was right to concentrate on scales as a relative beginner to get you to learn why you play such-and-such. Since slapping is simply a technique or style, the basics, like theory and chord construction and boring four-four time, are most important, just as they are with the six-string guitar. Incorporate slapping when you get a firmer grasp on the nuts-n-bolts of the bass. Now, I'm not advocating abandoning slapping, since I love to bust out like Mark and Les Claypool, but slow and easy is much better in the long run! (Remember: Mark started out as a drummer, so that's where he got much of his rapid, staccato, percussive slap style from!) As for equipment, stay away from the 5-string and 6-string basses for now. That buzz you get could be from either the strings rattling against the last fret at the end of the fingerboard closest to the pickups -- you could either file them down or have it done, or, you have bad pickups. That's when you should consult the guitar store and ask for a new, decent pickup. It's often an electrical problem with the bass itself and not the amp! If you can, have them check the inside electrical workings and the wiring for your bass. As for the amp, I'm not good with those -- again, try asking the guitar store staff. Or, you could always buy a bass on lay-away! Try accessing the Bass Player Magazine website at www.bassplayer.com: there's an article on selecting bass pickups there this month - -highly suggested.
