From: Lars-Ove Larsson Date: Sat, 20 May 2000 12:53:28 +0200 Considering the thread on the digest not so long ago about making music - lyrics or music first - I posed some questions to Boon about this and other matters around making music=2E The result can be read in the updated Boon Talk edition number two at http://www=2Eboongould=2Ecom Enjoy! Lars ------------------------------ Subject: An introduction from Dublin... From: "PHILIP O'BRIEN" Date: Sat, 20 May 2000 12:38:35 IST Hello Level 42 fans, I've now been into Level 42 for about 10 years, and unfortunately only managed to see them live once - there last gig in the Royal Albert Hall in 1994, but I have to say it was an unforgettable experience. After listening to the Physical Presence Live album I wasn't disappointed with their performance. I also managed to get over to London for one of Mark King's solo gigs in the Jazz Cafe.......excellent!! My favorite album would have to be either The Pursuit of Accidents or Standing in the Light. Is there any sign of Mr King gracing the Emerald Isle with his physical presence?! See you later Philip ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Subject: Hot Tracks From: "Winston Walker" Date: Sat, 20 May 2000 09:25:44 -0400 Hey Ernst, in regard to your post of yesterday: Hot Tracks is yet another DJ remixing service. They put out lots of remixes of songs, for dj's on a subscription service similar to 'Ultimix', 'Razormaid', 'Disconet', etc. While I dont have the 'hottracks' remix of SAY, what you describe sounds very much like the 'Razormaid' remix of SAY. Check them out at www.hottracks.com This remix os available on their 3 Lp set or single cd entitled 'The Edge - Level 3' You can order it from the website via phone or e-mail. Here is some info on this particular mix: BPM: 108.0 / Time: 6:09 Intro: 16/16/32 (:00) Break: 32/32 (3:15) Outro: 32 (5:52) Digital Mix by Ron Hester Courtesy of Polydor p Thanks to Denis McNamara at Polydor Mixes Used: Remix, Instrumental Here is a group that was musically on the cutting edge in the 80's. This was one of their most popular hits. Ron re-edited the intro on beat and took out the extra 8 beat turnaround sections until well into the meat of the song. A tightened structure will make this one a breeze to program and special EFX and stutter edits will keep your floors hoping. Best song ever written. First L42 cut I > heard, and it's still the best. Oh, enough of this nonsense. Since everybody seems to find lists so rivetting, here, off the top of my head and in no particular order, are ten songs lyrically and musically superior to Out Of Sight Out Of Mind: Squeeze - Tempted Beach Boys - God Only Knows XTC - Love On A Farmboy's Wages Steely Dan - Peg Hue & Cry - Rolling Home Divine Comedy - Songs Of Love Billy Joel - New York State Of Mind Nitin Sawhney - Immigrant Aztec Camera - Oblivious The Beatles - She's Leaving Home By the way, all these strong right arm/masturbation innuendo jokes are hilarious. It was funny the first time, and with each new re-interpretation it just gets stronger and stronger. Then again, I fail to understand "humor". I'd say it is Latin for MILK but then again what kind of a bandname is that ;-) Sam ------------------------------ Subject: De Lata From: "Norman van den Wildenberg" Date: Sat, 20 May 2000 17:39:41 +0200 Hi Levelheads, Here I found the linup of DeLata: Lilliana Chachian (percussion, vocals), Christian Franck (guitar, percussion), Oli Savill (percussion), Mike Lindup (keyboards), Andy Lafon (bass), Helder Pack (drums). Cheers, Norman ------------------------------ Subject: flops From: Bowman Brian J 2dLt 452 WG/PA Date: Sat, 20 May 2000 09:38:51 -0700 Sorry to be so late on this thread, but I've been out a couple of months to Maryland ... great to be home (sunny SoCal). This "flops" thing is interesting ... of course many of us agree The Ape just blows (and how could it actually make it on the album instead of At This Great Distance?, which I believe was part of the Guaranteed sessions) ... But whoever thinks Billy's Gone is a flop must not have heard the raw, BMG version of it. It's so much better than the Resurgence "cleaner" version, IMO, it's no contest. I love Billy's Gone. There's a lot of Wally's influence in that song, no doubt. But you know what? I love the "Forever Now" songs in general, so much more so than "Guaranteed" and or "Staring At The Sun". So I guess that makes me in Phil's camp. The Phil-Gary drum debate is kind of like Ginger or Mary Ann ... Ginger (Gary) is flashy, but Mary Ann's qualities last. What is the worst Level 42 album? -- Guaranteed gets my vote. Have we done this one before? Enough mindless ramblings ... Bo ------------------------------ Subject: Mike on Radio 1 From: "paul waller" Date: Sat, 20 May 2000 16:41:52 GMT Have any of you UK digesters considered the possibility of recording Mike's Radio 1 session from Sky digital? Radio 1 is on channel 911 in perfect digital quality. Granted the outputs on the digibox are analogue but you're going to get a better copy than you would from standard fm. I don't know if Radio 1 is available through on digital. If someone reminds me nearer the time i'll do it myself! From: JandSNuckels @ webtv.net (Jason & Sherry Nuckels) Date: Sat, 20 May 2000 09:58:13 -0700 (PDT) Hey Y'all, First of all, I wanna send a big Bay Area shout-out to Mike Dutra (gromit) for getting those L42 digest CDs out to me so quickly! I highly recommend him to everyone, he's also a helluva nice guy ( or "hella", as the kids say these days)! Does anyone have any color-inserts for the "AYGB" and "P & P" Digest CDs that they can send me? I know you can scan them from www.forevernow.com (hi, Carl!!), but I don't have a computer yet.... Speaking of Digest CDs, I have a suggestion / request to the original maker(s) of the Digest CDs. Now that we all know what bonus tracks will be on the upcoming re-issues, I'd still love to see some more old L42 stuff on CD, maybe titled AYGB Part 2 and 3? Here are some song suggestions: (PLEASE NOTE: I myself haven't heard or seen the 7" versions of some of the following songs, so if they're identical in length to the 12' versions, please disregard :-) ) 1. Istrumental Love (7" edit) 2. Forty Two (7" edit) 3. Beezer One (7" edit) 3. Foundation And Empire ( Part One? ) 4. Are You Hearing (What I Hear) (7" edit) 5. The Return Of The Handsome Rugged Man (7" edit) 6. Dune Tune (Live) 7. Love Games (Live) 8. Turn It On (Live) 9. 88 (Live) 10. Freedom (7" edit) 11. Freedom A Go Go (7" Edit) 12. Out Of Sight, Out Of Mind (7" edit) 13. You Can't Blame Louis (7" remix edit) 14. Micro Kid (Live, 7" edit) 15. Barcelona (from "Influences") 16. Boon's "Anti-Heroin Project" song (I forget the title) 17. Man (Part One?) Sorry for this long e-mail, but I'd love to see some feedback on this! From: "Teresa" Date: Sat, 20 May 2000 19:03:30 +0100 Loz, You've really started something now. What a great excuse to whip out the old vinyl and have a blast so I got out my 12 inch copy of the track only to find that mark doesn't say that line on the 12 inch. But for what it's worth on the albumn track I think mark definately says "oooohhh it's all ongo!!" What the hell does that mean??!! Regards Teresa ------------------------------ Subject: CDR brands, lower CD prices, slapping From: Brian L Date: Sat, 20 May 2000 14:41:15 -0500 CDR brands definately make a difference. Some will have more errors than others (but they do all have errors), some noticable some not. I've noticed the Imation's I've used are pretty much crap. TDK is definately the way to go. Mitsui silver/silver are supposed to be good too. Then maybe Maxell, Kodak gold, and Sony. Some cheap brands have to be burned at a slower speed (even 1x) than the drive's max or they'll have problems. Different players work differently with different brands also. Also try to stay away from 80 min CD's. The spirals are more tightly wound, so more likely to cause problems. Burning at 1x might help some. I've heard the CompUSA CDR's are that bad, but one thing I noticed that I didn't like too much on my CompUSA brand is how easy they are to see through. From: Winston Walker > > Think CD prices are too high? The Federal Trade Commission certainly does. > > Apparently, the major CD distributors have been keeping CD prices > artificially high. Not surprised? News Editor Jonathan K. Matzkin details > the settlement at: Yeah I heard about this! Finally! I wish they'd done this before I bought hundreds of CD's. Also there's a little bit about it here, also w/ an article about the Metallica/Napster thing: http://www.salon.com/tech/log/2000/05/10/napster_metallica/index.html From: "James Watkins" > > I can't remember if I've said it before but has anyone got the same thing as > I have. I'm not the most well built of blokes in the world, but due to > constant slapping of my bass over the past 12 odd years, my rotator cuff (a > muscle going perpendicular to the length of your arm at the wrist which > rotates your wrist in the slapping style) has grown to weight lifter > proportions through constant use. I'm no doctor (and don't play one on TV) but the rotator cuff is nowhere near the wrist. It runs from the back at the shoulder blade (scapula) over the shoulder to the top of the top of the larger bone in your arm (the humerous).
