A thoroughly snobbish intellectual argument in my opinion, and somewhat condescending. What makes you think that you are trained in philosophy? Or genetics, for that matter. I fail to see how can you blame the field of genetic research for that failings of mankind in the past.. Maybe I just got out of bed the wrong side today, but it really gets my goat when people spout on about how wrong scientists are when they clearly are not in the best place to comment, quoting as they do, some higher argument to justify their stance, whilst ignoring facts and the positive things that come out of this field. You may remember me as i ran a fanzine called The Pursuit of 42 back in the early 90's. I am now using the internet at a cyber cafe in southampton after many years in the wilderness away from many of you who I got to know via my fanzine. After reading through the old digests I see a few of you were talking about the fanzine and where to get hold of copies, and it's nice to read good things said about it despite the herendous punctuation mistakes i've noticed when reading old issues - I was young and crazy you see. I'm sorry it came to an abrupt end but was finding it very time consuming and difficult to write on my own and to find new articles. It did only last for twelve issues. Although it was some years ago but was sorry to read people not liking me selling the tapes. Sorry folks - I was young and poor, I still get a kick out of the Dronton '81 concert - and no, i'm not selling them any more. I still have 100's of unsold fanzines in the loft and will put another message on the digest soon about receiving them. I'll be using this cyber cafe about once or twice a week. I'm still living at the same address in Southampton (sad isn't it) and have the same number so phone me if you want to know about the fanzines. Bye for now. ------------------------------ Subject: Re: responses From: Greatanger @ aol.com Date: Tue, 2 May 2000 08:54:52 EDT Doesn't it ask in the digest guidelines to refrain from quoting the ENTIRE digest when responding? Last July you mentioned something about a massive 80's style gig that would be happening this year (August ?). It was going to involve Tears For Fears and possibly Level 42. I was just wondering if you had heard any more about it ??? Non L42 bit Bought the latest Tom Jones album at the weekend (can't remember the name, "Reload" I think). He sings with a different artist/ band for each track (covers). It is absolutely fantastic. I would urge you all to get it. I know that there are some James Taylor Quartet fans out there ! They will be released in a "two for the price of one" format - i.e. all double c.d. releases (e.g. Level 42 & The Early Tapes will be released together in a double c.d. case; Pursuit of Accidents & Standing in the Light, and so on). Each package will contain 12-page artwork containing new sleeve notes and plenty of photographs, including many "new" ones. The Physical Presence will be released as a double c.d. in its own right, including the 3 tracks ommitted from the original c.d. release. Check out the major L42 web sites in the next few days for further details. But this time IT'S FOR REAL !!! - the re-releases are on their way ! I have to say, the Level 42 Play at Home video is superb, real almost unpolished footage. I love the performance of 88, which has always been one of my favourites, but I've never got to see on video. It'd be great if mark would play it on his next tour. And I finally got to hear Boon talk at last, seemed weird. ;-) Some of the singings a bit rough on the video (please - just my opinion!) but it does have a 'proper' live quality about it. Also, for shipping a bass from America (maybe not a clever move as I live in England but just interested) I know you have to pay a hell of a lot of shipping costs, but do you also have to pay duty/tax, and if so isn't this cancelled out if you send the parcel as cadeau/gift? I don't know, but would appreciate any help on the matter. Okay, thatsa it Thanks Dale Krause ------------------------------ Subject: Non level 42 posting. I can change the Operator line in my phone, but only when i have another Nokia phone which can send these operator lines.... Well who has a Nokia phone who can do this for me? If you will help me with this, email me privatly ( level42 @ casema.net ). So we can find out witch operator line you use. Many Thanks.... And sorry for this non real Level 42 posting. As a philosopher who teaches >race ...blah, blah, blah I think this discussion is all out of proportion to it's importance, but genetics is NOT merely a social construct. Genetics / Inheritance are one of two ways that traits are aquired by offspring. The other is mutation. If I have type A blood, my progeny either had a precursor of that, or I mutated. This can describe the similarity in a family, but not the disparity. The whole racial angle of this discussion takes the point of view that there are positive and negative charachteristics. THAT is a social construct. And as for the NAZI angle, eugenics was first given governmental support an $$ in the good ol' US of A, the Nazi's merely built on that work and tried to expand it. From: "Teresa" Date: Tue, 2 May 2000 19:36:02 +0100 Hi there.. at last I can write to the digest (cheers Eric ol' lad!). I have a question that's been bugging me for around the last 15 years or so. I have on tape an old track, I don't know what it's called or where it came from. It's got the great bit near the end by Mark that goes something like "rap rap bring it on back, say what shut up and cut the cliches" ( & then a bit I can't quite catch then...),"they've gone, they've gone, they've gone but the music carries on. Are you are you the one that brought the track in the hat on the hill!!! Sit still sit still skiddleabanging..." and so it goes on. Obviously I've got the words wrong (no we'd bever have guesed!) but where has this track come from & what is it called. Hope someone can help Regards Tegs. ------------------------------ Subject: Wholly Krap From: "Brian Flint" Date: Tue, 02 May 2000 12:38:41 PDT I'm back from my self imposed banishment from the digest. Many things have happened before I wandered off into the uncharted forest of my own isolation. To whit, James Reno sent in the commandos to steal a child. Well done Mr. Reno, NOW SEND HIM BACK TO CUBA!! The Sharks beat the St. Lous Blues proving once again that nothing is a given. I struggle with the realization that all of us are so convoluted surround what we know, what we think we know, and what we want others to think we know, that the majority of our autobiographies would be found in the fiction section of the local book store. I may be to harsh. But then again I really don't care. See, I've developed my Zero tolerance policy to include all aspects of life, both Fantastic and real. That means, in certain terms, ddon't f with me and I won't f with you. However, it's refreshing to see the leaner version of the digest lately. That's a good thing. Less crud to read through. Less of the essential "I have on good authority" or "Mark told me...." Blah blah blah. I don't buy it. As well as the "Mark works hard so don't pirate" That's all well and good too, but usually if you have to say it, it means your doing it. I digress. My sincerist apologies. I beg thee of thy pardon. One last thing. Please refrain from trying to out do each other and subsequently bragging about it. All of this quasi-ecentric, "Gotta be accepted" crap is ridiculous. Who really cares? What are you going to do, walk up to Spazio and say " I don't have a reservation, but I think you'll find a table for me, for I am (Insert guilty name here) the wittiest guy on the LEVEL 42 DIGEST this week." And the Butler, oh Maitre De (HA) MATER DEE heh heh.....okay anyway, he'll say "Oh right away sir, I'm sorry I didn't recognize you." Yes, I'm complaining, and it makes me feel good.
