On >the other hand some songs would do better without the lyrics, imho 'Can't >Walk you home' fits perfectly into this category. Dead right, especially Dune TUne. I often think in the faint harmony bit of Dune Tune that Mark/Mike is/are singing something like 'it's the way she is, the way she is, the way she is in her heart, in her heart'. I don;t know where I got the idea from but I fear it could be pariolia (making faces from random dots). It reminds me of Marks verbalising of words on some demos. Can't Walk You Home without lyrics? Preposterous! It's classic Level 42. Washeth out your mouth with soap. It's no secret that most songs begin without words and then words are added. Of course, 'One Man' reversed this trend with the majority of the words coming fisrt on all the tracks which Boon co-wrote. Bye L()Z ------------------------------ Subject: JD's, frets etc. From: "David Jacobs (Server 1)" Date: Thu, 20 Apr 2000 11:22:13 +0100 Jay You mentioned that you want a JD bass in the North of England? At a push, I'd suggest trying Birmingham - there's usually a good selection there (Bass Centre, and Musical Exchanges). Have a look on the Jaydee club page, I believe some are coming up for sale? Also frets - from what you're describing, tram lines etc on the frets are probably due to them being made out of crap wire! There was an old joke about war time Japanese guitars having frets made of solder! My newest JD (9 years old) has had no fret work done, and I play 0.45's Stainless Steel (not Nickel) - and it has no marks at all! - And it gets played hard! There's no substitute for good frets! I would suggest Jim Dunlop jumbo fret wire, or something of equal calibre. JD himself does some great fret work! Hope this helps. Dave Jacobs ------------------------------ Subject: Instrumentals From: Martin Brindley Date: Thu, 20 Apr 2000 12:17:04 +0100 I just thought I'd stick up for the early tracks and instrumentals, especially as talk lately has focused on the FN period. I will now take a few more tablets and have a lie down. Eric W I'm with you Eric! Although I never had the pleasure of witnessing these masterpieces live, tracks such as 42, Heathrow, Dune Tune, 88 will always remain as top of my list of faves! I really hope that Mark will consider playing a different instrumental than Mr Pink on the next tour - don't get me wrong, it is a fantastic track and one of the highlights (if not the highlight at the jazz cafe) but it would be great for 'new' (ie post '86!!) fans to get to hear some of the other instrumental tracks live. All the best Martin ------------------------------ Subject: Bonus Tracks From: john stewart Date: Thu, 20 Apr 2000 04:30:52 -0700 (PDT) Hello everyone, There`s been a lot of talk recently regarding the song "Freedom Someday". For me, this song falls into the category of Bonus Tracks. Back in the eighties I would only buy the albums on vinyl, so I`d have to obtain the bonus tracks from friends who`d bought the cassettes. This of course made tracks such as Freedom Someday & Dream Crazy appear to be somewhat special. (I was only Young!). But, the bonus track that really tugged at my heart strings was the extra track on True Colours, "My Hero". An emotional, laid back groove. Beautifully draped with irony & melancholy. One of my favourites. Just thought I`d let you know. If anybody is trying to get in touch with me regarding the Play At Home video, don`t fret! I will get back to you all. My wife is about to give birth so I am a little preoccupied at the moment. Please be patient. Speak to you soon. Love John __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I only discovered it recently on the Level42.com jukebox, and now its one of my favourite songs. The bass line is great, and I love it when the groove really gets going, where you hear Mark shout 'hey' in the background. Anyway enough of my rantings... I know there's a label called Class-X Records which is a house label, sublabel of the more known Sub-Urban label (see http://www.northcott.co= m) >The sun goes down promo only remix came on a 1 sided 12", is has 1 sec= tion >towards the end of the track that is clearly different from any other version - >it's certinaly more different than the upfront mix. well, is it a bit like the Spirit is free 12"? which is also different towards the end,.. although almost no-one will spot the difference with the original? In that case it's for me not really a different mix. >I have though of another - There are 2 chinese way NY dubs - one on th= e US >promo 12" and one on the UK 12" which came free with Micro Kid 12" and= they are >both quite different. Unreached Levels contains the longest one (7:26 from US 12"), not the shorter one (5:14) on the RITF 2x12". >Also a lot of the remixes >on 'The Platinum Edition' are not found elsewhere even though they sou= nd very >similar to other mixes. Euhm, so you buy the Platinum Edition and you have 'em, right? Children Say & It's Over do sound so similar to other versions I never really noticed the difference... >As I said, I like edits, you get edits of stuff like 'There Is A Dog' - 'Almost >there' etc etc. I think is you include edits and megamixes there is st= ill about >4 CD's worth of stuff out there that is not available on CD. Then agai= n, if you >include all the stuff on bootleg you'll probably need a 10 CD set. I had many 7" releases, all listened to them and they were just album v= ersions with some parts cut away to make it shorter. As I said, with a computer you can redo these edits if you know where t= o cut! trust me, UL wasn't made in 5 minutes, it took 3 months to compile, compare, clean, remaster, test & burn! Megamixes... got some (dmc #1, dmc#2, music factory, judge, 2 Ben Liebr= ands) and they all tend to get boring after a while... I've been slapping like lunatic for around 10 years or so, and I've yet to wear out any frets - of course, I've changed basses every few years, too. I'd like to make a recommendation for having your frets replaced, though. Chris Ward at the Bass Centre ( 0171 265 1567 ) did a fabulous job repairing the fingerboard and replacing the frets Mark had pulled out of his Moon Jazz bass (so he could do a fretless part on "Seven Years"), which is now in my own bass arsenal.
