I believe the person who wrote that, is the notorious mister Nightfly, known for his 'funny' contributions. He enjoys getting on peoples nerves. My advise is to just ignore him. On with the next : Huge R.: the Level Best video contains clips only, 16 to be exact. Whereas the Family Of 5 contains, well, only 5 clips. And Huge, nice gadgets those e-mail adresses, but please fix the HTML stuff will ya ;-) Sam ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V2000 #4 From: Bill Burnett Date: Sat, 26 Feb 2000 14:14:24 +0000 In message <200002261200.HAA13797 @ worldmachine.com>, Level42 Digest writes >Exactly how Mark achieves The Bends may always be a mystery Sits down and writes it like all the others I guess. -- ======================================================================== Bill Burnett http://www.sphere3.demon.co.uk/ ======================================================================== ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V2000 #4 From: JJBAZ1 @ aol.com Date: Sat, 26 Feb 2000 14:10:42 EST To John and Anthony-- In our household we love L42 and Carlos. My husband is the big Levelheader, while I an the Santanaholic. It has been this way with us for years, so you see we truly have the best of both worlds. And as for somebody not being able to enjoy "old gits from 20 years ago" where would Carlos be today if this were true? (Anyhow, the Dan still rocks for us, too!) By the way, I'm 42 years old. I await your reply. Thanks, John. No, thank you John. I secretly hoped there would be one, but I thought they would at least be quite new round these parts. Let's me try to explain. Take a look at my e-mail address. Now open a dictionary at the page which contains the word "irony". Are you getting it yet? I guess you've never read any of my submissions before. Fair enough, I hardly ever post here myself. (Still got the dictionary open at the irony page? Have another look.) Thanks for asking the question in public as well, rather than e-mailing me privately. And for asking for a reply - it gives me the excuse to answer you publicly. The really ironic thing is that Steely Dan lyrics are themselves overflowing with irony and sarcasm. Maybe John's proving what a true SD fan he is by posting the above super-ironic message. Yes, that must be it. > Subject: NYC Levelfest > From: Dave Mock > > Am just recovering from the Grammys Can somebody please explain the Grammys to me? How can one person win 8 or 9 of them? There are only about 12 Brit Awards in total, and nobody could feasibly win more than about 3 or 4. Is it that the Grammys are broken down into implausibly distinct categories, eg Best Tambourine Playing On A Jazz Funk 12" Single? And however long does it go on for? I am also a Brian McKnight fan, too. He is coming to Seattle on Monday, the 28th. My best friend got me hooked on him several years ago. We are very excited to see him live. His songs are both complex in the music and lyrics. I highly recommend his first CD (self-titled). He has some deep content in his songs about love and relationships. I have been listening to the Unreached Levels CDs lately and they sound really nice, thanks to all who put in the effort, they sound great!! I am hearing mixed reviews on the Live at the Jazz Cafe CD's, I will definetly have to pick one up from MK. Does he also personally sign them like with Trash? I also bought a copy of the bass book "Pop Basslines" by Joe Hubbard which has a transcription of SAY, a few Go West tunes, Tears for Fears, and several other transcriptions. I heard that the book before this is one is very popular but it's out of print (is it called "Basslines"?). That's all for now, take care. Peace, Zanchie Whitehead ------------------------------ Subject: From: the_saint @ planet.nl Date: Sat, 26 Feb 2000 23:51 +0000 bout bending strings; you should take a better watch to the live vids of l42 or mk. You can even take a good look to the videoclips cause Mark mostly likes to play the bass "as in real".(you won't need an advise of a studio engineer) victor wooten: the harmonic as described in yesterdays digest was done before by john patitucci. there's a vid from chick corea electric band, check that one out. (and after john came brian bromberg, and after brian cam jonas hellborg, and after jonas.....there was me...and lots o others. if you need a harmonic in a panic way....just lay down your left hand on the fretboard and with your right slam tha bass, I'm sure you'll hear a lot of them for the interested people: take a listen to jaco P. I'll explain to you personally how to do those harmonics! Off bas talk. I agree bout the voices of M and M. but what shall we say bout the voice of M. on One Man,and Trash ! ( I have have this wonderfull experience with "take my hand" gosh i love that song !. off voices: I don't miss the audience on JCCD, in fact i hate people shouting through great songs( and especially bass solos). I refer to Andre Huijts last posting (ages ago),bout the yoho-thing. You can show your enthousiasm after the song(or solo) can't you ? Thanx to special friends i have lots of live recordings and it always has the yoho thing on it...dammn, why spoil a great solo by your shouting, wich is out of rythm and doesn't mean anything. When you "try" to sing" please keep in key, or don't sing loud. Keep your special bought whistles at home ! I really can't believe that Mark, or any other band member is waiting for you to shout stupid words or to sing a long with them out of key!!! Enjoy the music, the lyrics, the ambience. so.....no whistles, no shoutings, don't sing in your neighbours ear, don't throw up beer .....(?). Good to have the digest back. To the guy how buys all those ex-Mark basses,.....why? for the bass or just of Mark played them..... nough said. cheers, the saint.... ------------------------------ Subject: harmonics From: Hans de Graaf Organization: World Access Date: Sun, 27 Feb 2000 10:24:17 +0100 Perhaps there has never been so much discussion about harmonics. There are two kinds of harmonics. 1 is the open string harmonic an 2 is the false harmonic Jaco Pastorius is known for. The thing described in yesterday's digest is basically a false harmonic, because it uses the principal of dividing the string in two and then play the note with your index finger just behind your thumb, which touches the string gently on a harmonic position. In this way you can play any harmonic pitch you like. It takes effort but it is worth while. Than for the pitching up harmonics... well indeed you can put pressure on the strings between the nut and machine heads. For the higher strings that works fine. The lower strings are too tight to work them that way, and perhaps Mark was using hipshot machine heads, for they can retune your bass in an instance?! Than there is the sliding option. THis works fine on frettles basses: make the harmonic but don't withdraw your finger. Press it down to the fingerboard almost simultaneously. Than slide down or up whatever you fancy. On fretted basses you will gain some fret-noise and the string will start to speak, still the harmonic will be dominant. Than there is the bend up way. You start the same way as previous told, so you play the harmonic, press down to the finger board, and then bend up "guitar-solo wise". After some practice you can get pretty big tone swings. On the g-string c- position, you can go as high as A in the bend. And back again ofcourse. Add sometremolo at the and and he presto you got the beginning of that l42 song. When I brought the single "My Fathers Shoes" I played the the track a few times (As Years Go By) and enjoyed it and then it has sat in my CD rack for years without being played until the other week.
