I think I tried last year sometime when I mentioned on the digest how I had really felt like I'd re-discovered the track STARING AT THE SUN. This track perfectly showcases Mark and Mike singing in harmony together with beautiful lyrics, and is now one of my favourite tracks from that album. You are correct , Mark and Mike really do have wonderful voices in their own right, but hearing them sing together is just heaven..... anyone else got any tracks that they feel that have almost 're-discovered ' ? tcoy Dean Osborn ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V2000 #3 From: StingFan21 @ aol.com Date: Fri, 25 Feb 2000 08:11:37 EST ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V2000 #3 From: StingFan21 @ aol.com Date: Fri, 25 Feb 2000 08:11:44 EST ------------------------------ Subject: Re: As The Years Go By From: StingFan21 @ aol.com Date: Fri, 25 Feb 2000 08:18:46 EST Hey Levelheads, Lauren here, How is everyone doing? A guy that I work with has got a real beauty of a Fender - its a Fretless Precision, of CBS age (approximately early 70's), which has EMG pickups (P/J config), and an ebony fingerboard. So, it's pretty much custom, but is it nice? - Its the dogs danglies! So why is that old instruments can have this aura about them? - Yet my brother-in-law bought a Spector bass (NS-10) I think, which is their entry level model, and it's fantastic! - So I really don't know what makes some instruments better than others (even the instruments in a batch) - it isn't the wood, because I've played crap Status's too! Brian L(bluttrull @ home.com) asked about a good starter bass - well, the Spector wins for me at £200 pounds sterling (well, it was in a sale)! It just goes to prove, a good bass can be bought on a budget! ------------------------------ Subject: Current info on TRASH and LIVE/JAZZ CAFE CDs and VIVA SANTANA!! From: "Anthony Richards" Date: Fri, 25 Feb 2000 10:23:07 -0500 To Eric and the worldwide Level 42 posse of funkateers, Welcome back!! Good to be vibin' with y'all again. Keep on keepin' it funky with Mark King and Level 42 in da Y2G! Ok, ok (no groaning out there now....), I'm just about to FINALLY order my copies of the TRASH and JAZZ CAFE cds (better late than never, eh?). Does anyone know if Mark is still signing personalized messages on the CDs? Not to be greedy (I already have a personally signed 12" of "Lessons In Love" from Mark), but it would be just great if I can still get signed copies of those CDs. Also, I'm sure Mark is also celebrating the success of Carlos Santana at the Grammys (go Carlos!!). As you know, Mark has previously expressed his love of the music of Santana, and in particular the playing of former Santana bassist Doug Rauch (R.I.P.). To anyone out there who isn't as yet familiar with the music of Santana.....jump into this deep pool of musical genius and artistry, and I assure you that you will find the music of Santana to be as valuable and sacred a musical treasure as our own dear Mark King and Level 42. Well, first off, you can check out http://www.timeout.com but I really would recommend picking up at least one or more copies of the London edition of Time Out (you can find them at Tower Books and most Borders). There is all kinds of information in there on goings on, and venue locations. When you get there, you might also pick up a copy of the Time Out visitor's guide (from any corner rag shop). You might also poke around http://www.thisislondon.co.uk and http://www.londontraveller.com (British Airway's guide to London). Therefore: For sale, excellent condition copy of Mark King - I Feel Free white label promo 12". Alas this is not for trade, regular readers will be aware that these sales fund an unfortunate fortnightly liaison with Oxford Utd. If anybody is interested please e-mail offers to me. I've had a previous offer of 10 UKP ($16.50) which may or may not be still valid, but I guess to avoid confusion you should start there. If more than one person expresses an interest I will e-mail everybody to tell them what the high bid is in case anybody wants to go higher. This is not (just) me being mercernary, it is because in previous sales I have had several bids of almost exactly the same amount, and since I hadn't anticipated that I had to disappoint people who happened to read the Digest later than others. AG PS Latin readers: could any Spanish/Latin American people confirm that there has been another Presuntos Implicados CD since Siete? And could any Italian people recommend a good CD to start with Paolo Conte? E-mails to me personally please, I'm sure nobody else here needs to know. ------------------------------ Subject: level best video From: "Huge Rademaker" Date: Fri, 25 Feb 2000 21:42:43 +0100

My opinion on the live CD (only worth a penny...):
I was amazed by the time frame it was released!! So quick, I mean. And
yet so much work was done on the recording. It sounds too clean, but
the quality is good and I realy enjoy listening to it.

bye for now.

Bass regards,

Huge Rademaker

I was lucky enough to attend a workshop with Victor Wooten & he had shown us a very unique form of harmonic, for those of you whom have not heard of Victor Wooten he has incredible finger & thumb dexterity & has produce some original bass slap /pluck techniques. It's hard to explain but here goes... 1. Hold down the Phat Funk-E string, the one at the top of bass with your left hand index finger. 2. Slap that string with your right hand thumb but keep the thumb just under the the string. 3. Now with you're left hand index finger pull/tweak the E-string down. (This will now bring the E-string down towards your thumb of your right hand to where you just slapped the string). This is where it gets real cool... As the string barley touches the nail of your thumb you'll here that harmonic, continue manipulating the string with your index finger and the harmonic changes. The whole process takes a split second, it takes practice but once achieved, you'll now understand that you can use this technique at any on any string on any fret time whilst playing, really awesome technique when you need a harmonic on the fly! One other harmonic quickie is taking the G-string & actually pulling it off of the fret board, in a downward but pushing pack toward the bass manor, I guess it's really just a ping but it is harmonic. "Yo Victor - Peace" Well gotta split Check ya later bass headz ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V2000 #3 From: JCresswell @ aol.com Date: Fri, 25 Feb 2000 18:05:12 EST ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V2000 #3 From: JCresswell @ aol.com Date: Fri, 25 Feb 2000 18:05:19 EST ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V2000 #3 From: JCresswell @ aol.com Date: Fri, 25 Feb 2000 18:05:21 EST ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V2000 #3 From: JCresswell @ aol.com Date: Fri, 25 Feb 2000 18:05:24 EST ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V2000 #3 From: JCresswell @ aol.com Date: Fri, 25 Feb 2000 18:05:16 EST ------------------------------ Subject: NYC Levelfest From: Dave Mock Date: Fri, 25 Feb 2000 15:33:48 -0800 (PST) Hey, Micro-Kids: Am just recovering from the Grammys, and from Jennifer Lopez's dress (?!) Putting your finger on the string between nut and tuning pegs sounds feasible, but have you ever tried it? On the G string you can get away with it, but remember this string is wound the tightest and there isn't really that much give. The two strings in between are even less forgiving, and by the time you get to the E string you've only got about half an inch of free string - virtually no give at all (all of this depends on the model of bass, of course). Using your hands to effectively "bend" the body of the bass can work, but the effect is minimal - what's more, if you're a slap-happy plank spanker you don't get much time to get your hands into position so far away from the strings. Exactly how Mark achieves The Bends may always be a mystery - but I wonder if some studio engineer will one day reveal that for recording purposes they just rapidly slowed the tape then switched it back to full speed? It would work - I know, I've tried it. By the way - if any of you guys happens to own a Tanglewood Warrior bass and fancy trying out your harmonics bending techniques, forget it. Can't be done. Hey, is it good to be back or what? Deano
