Lee, I LOVE syncronised, I think its the best album they have done, with EOPE being my second fav. Tracks like Soul Education and Planet Home are excellent. Talking of other class non level tracks, I've just this minute got back from the record shop with Green Onions by Booker T and the MGs on 45. I've been looking for this for ages, and all I can say is WOW. These guys really grooved, I've listened to it about 10 times already. Cool to jam with as well. I'm going to try and get their song 'Soul Limbo' as well, I think thats the one on the cricket isn't it fellow uk digestors? Just thought I'd let you all know I did Dune Tune for my college music concert on tuesday night. It went well, except that the guy on drums messed up a bit on the fill into the rocky section, you know which bit. The program looked bizarre, with the likes of Chopin and Mozart clustered around 'mark king'. The response was quite good from the crowd, afterwards everyone kept saying 'the guy out of level 42', so I'm glad someone knew what I was doing. okay thats it Dale ------------------------------ Subject: Response to David Jacobs re gum From: "Cookie Duster" Date: Thu, 23 Mar 2000 09:18:35 PST As the originator of the posting about "gum", I'd like to post a response to David Jacobs' message on yesterday's Digest. David wrote: "What a sad debate. I can't believe so many of you have taken this so seriously, and some even copied it?! I mean, if Mark used a specific type of toilet roll, and wiped his ass in a certain way - would you copy that as well?! ...... It's great that we have such brilliant musical heroes, but there is a danger in becoming obsessed by someone, and I fear some of you may have stepped over this boundary." First off, I asked a question to the Digest readers out there about the reason why Mark chews gum on stage. Such a harmless question IMHO. I don't see many singers do this and therefore I raised the question. I found it very nice that some people responded to my query and for that I thank them. I disagree with you that this is a "sad debate". It wasn't meant to be a debate at all! From the responses, I don't believe that people were trying to "BE" like Mark. You write about "toilet rolls"?? C'mon!...That's not what this is all about! There's no comparison! I only questioned about a type of gum because as most gum chewers know, after chewing for awhile, a piece of gum becomes harder and that's why I asked if there was a certain type of gum for singers. Yes, I certainly agree with you that we have such brilliant musical heroes but I don't feel that any of us on this Digest are "obsessed" by the members of Level 42. We all enjoy their music immensely - otherwise we wouldn't be part of this Digest. Kansas City Milkman email : maybury @ nildram.co.uk web: www.maybury.nildram.co.uk ------------------------------ Subject: From: "Mike Payne" Date: Thu, 23 Mar 2000 13:51:09 CST Some music reviews that Level 42 were as a reference, I thought some of you might like to read this: TALK TALK London 1986 (Pond Life) It's the flick of Hendrix's Zippo, the gulp of Lennon's first-love heart: that elusive spark of musical rebirth. It's just that someone saw fit to actually record the moment when Talk Talk transformed from LEVEL 42 in black polo necks into the avant-garde missionaries for the post-chorus generation who invented Mogwai's quiet bits ten years too early. It was the moment the early pop grumbles of 'Colour Of Spring' clashed with Mark Hollis' desire to emulate the sound of the moons orbiting Planet Stonedtofuck. And it occurred during Talk Talk's last ever live performance at the Hammersmith Odeon in May 1986, when 'Life's What You Make It' segued into a lengthy funk-prog workout of 'Does Caroline Know?' and the U2 for socially crippled theology students realised they could never tour this earth again. 'London 1986' is their belated live swansong, a sumptuous eight-song set, naturally flawed by 13 years spent nestling under the master-tapes of 'Swing Out Sister Live At Anglesea Chuffgrinders'. With the help of Peter Gabriel's session musos and Hollis' ability to sing like the stone staircase from the 'Vienna' video, tunes like 'Renee' and 'Such A Shame' inevitably sound like an undead Yazoo. But after this they began recording the natural vibrations of cellos in a quest for the perfect noise, so set aside your allergy to slap bass and revisit the '80s' ultimate turning of the tides.-Mark Beaumont LES RYTHMES DIGITALES Brighton Beach Deck Jacques Lu Cont, sweat dripping from his neon-red hair, rips his shiny blue top off. Brighton screams. But it's not an oiled six-pack they're aghast at, rather it's his white fishnet T-shirt with red tassels that shocks, a garment not seen since Michael Jackson's 'Bad' video circa 1987. And with good reason. It's no real surprise, though, given that the rest of Jacques' attire consists of white pumps, a chunky digital watch and, in perhaps the greatest sartorial faux pas of recent times, a pair of blue stone-washed jeans. New ones, with leather-topped back pockets. Not very chi-chi, but very LRD. For despite being only 12 when they officially ended, the '80s have had a frighteningly profound affect on Jacques: the horrific garb is merely a logical extension of Les Rythmes Digitales' pristine and highly-polished funk-fuelled disco pop. It's 1983's finest moments freeze-dried and repackaged for beginners, but scratch the surface and there's nothing there, right? Wrong. LRD may be more pop than Billie, but much of the music is informed by such synth pioneers as Kraftwerk and Georgio Moroder, while 'Disco To Disco' blends the crisp house of Daft Punk with Pet Shop Boys' overt use of melody. Right now, LRD are both novel and a novelty, a fact Jacques seems only too aware of as he teases the front rows with his deft, LEVEL 42 bass thwacking during 'Jacques Your Body'. Jacques, too, is a natural showman. Either that or he's milking the big beat-weary crowd's adoration now that his star is rapidly ascending. Whether it sets as quickly matters not though, because, strange as it may seem, it's actually impossible to dislike the way he lip-syncs to his songs, or strikes ludicrous poses, or makes his guitar 'talk' on the marvellous 'Music Makes You Lose Control'. And that's good old-fashioned entertainment. But not, sadly, good old fashion.-Pierrs Martin ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Subject: Drumming From: Greatanger @ aol.com Date: Thu, 23 Mar 2000 16:05:04 EST Terri H: << Anybody else got some words for Phil? >> "Romance" is saved from being overly maudlin by the drumming.
