I can't believe so many of you have taken this so seriously, and some even copied it?! I mean, if Mark used a specific type of toilet roll, and wiped his ass in a certain way - would you copy that as well?! If he picked his nose whilst singing the Chinese way, would you do that?! If he went for a crap before every gig, would you do that 'religiously' as well?! It's great that we have such brilliant musical heroes, but there is a danger in becoming obsessed by someone, and I fear some of you may have stepped over this boundary. Me, I'm too far up my own ass to care about emulating anyone else - try it sometime, you might like it! ;-) ------------------------------ Subject: Larry Graham From: "ZTAVENDL" Date: Wed, 22 Mar 2000 14:05:01 -0000 Hi Level heads, just thought I should mention that there is a CD out called "Larry Graham central station", and there is a song on it called "Hair" This song is brilliant, but what is distinctive about it, that it reminds me of "88" on "The Early Tapes"! Here are some more great CD's that I am sure any Level 42 fan will love: Phil Upchurch "What ever happened to the blues" Ramsey Lewis "Sky Islands" Tower of Power "Back to Oakland" (and most of their other albums) Jamiroquai "Synkronised" Earth Wind and Fire "I AM" (Its just the best album ever!) Steely Dan "most of their stuff" and any "Brothers Johnson" stuff If any body knows any of these groups, write to me! ------------------------------ Subject: Straight rods and different positions From: alex.friesen @ sickkids.on.ca Date: Wed, 22 Mar 2000 09:42:03 -0500 >From: Nick Brazier > >can anyone recommend a website for getting cheap drum sticks >(but good makes) prefer UK site as shipping will be cheaper > Remember that you can't screen mail-order sticks. I reject almost half of all sticks I pull off of the shop shelf because many are warped, and some have an obviously different density. Recently some manufacturers have started pre-matching pairs, but that's just a marketing scam: if you break one stick are you going to throw it's twin away and start with a fresh pair? Not bloody likely when you're paying $7 a pair! > >Also - sound engineers - would you recommed recording the snare >with the mic underneath the snare or on top of it.....? > I have tried this several times, but the only time we've ever kept the bottom mic track is as a subtle addition to the top one. You tend to get more bottom end and a whole lot more snare buzz from the bottom. You miss the top end and bright attack that you'll get from the top. That said, I would encourage you to try it out for at least one take, just so you can check out the difference for yourself. If you have the tracks, record top and bottom concurrently so you can compare. ******* >Try no to injure > Just call me Bill Iterate. >Brain--you're on a roll > Er, that shoulda sed "Brian." I will be in London for most of that period, I will also be doing some side daytrips to Manchester, Bedfordshire, Isle of Wight (of course), and possibly Wiltshire. I hope that the UK people that are getting this message not via the ILF/Digest are still planning to FEST somewhere during this time. I look forward to seeing most of you in the next couple of weeks! :) Best and Kind Regards, Mikey42 ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Subject: Odds & Sods From: "Cliff & Debjani Barua" Date: Wed, 22 Mar 2000 17:37:32 -0500 Haven't written in awhile, so here goes (some Level 42, mostly not. Scroll down at your leisure): To demonstrate the sad state of affairs of the lost Holy Grail known as the Level 42 remasters, I was in the HMV in downtown Toronto, and what do I see: 20-bit remasters of the Bay City Rollers!!! Now, I remember the words to "Saturday Night" and "Money Honey" just like the next 35-year old. But the thought of a 20-bit remaster of "Rock and Roll Love Letter" existing, but nothing of "Lying Still" ....... well, blimey, it just breaks my East London-born 'eart. I then saunter over to the Level 42 section, and what do I see: another hits collection, red case (I think), and identical to the track listing of "Master Series" (which was also in the stacks). The new one was even advertised as "remastered", but then so was "Master Series". And the next Torontonian that writes in saying he can't find any Level 42 should head straight for the optician. At Sam's and HMV, you can pretty much find all titles (including both Forever Now's), bar "A Physical Presence". BH Conrad wanted a translation. Iti's means Italians (though it's usually spelled Eye-Ties). "Beckham is a prat" needs no translation. Well, OK, David Beckham is the sarong-wearing, wife's thong-preferring Manchester United player. His wife is Victoria, known as Posh Spice, immotalised in the (original) West Ham song, "Posh Spice takes it up the .......". Beckham's crop is his newly shaved head. I hate to admit it, but that was a nice goal on the weekend against Leicester. And, finally, "Up the 'Ammers", is a tribute to the greatest, under-achieving football club ("saw-kerr team") in the world, West Ham United. Hope that helps. Congrats to Lisa / Mrs Pink on being an Orient fan (and resolving your web-site problems). I used to spend many a Saturday afternoon on the terraces of Brisbane Road when I was a kid, if West Ham were playing away outside of London. Mr Goodwin: the good news is that the new Steely Dan album is great. The bad news is that you might to have sell less of your Level 42 collection if Oxford makes the great fall to the Fourth Division (sounds much better than the Third Division). Surely, you won't be still following them ..... And finally, Brian .... enjoyed your American news bit. But the guy who found the Oscars is not homeless, Ed Belfour is a drunk (offered the police $100,000, and then straight to 1 Billion dollars), and the police killed the hostage taker in Baltimore. Once again, thanks to CNN for allowing us Canadians to see what we're "missing" by only living next door to the "greatest country in the world". But you've got cheap MiniDiscs, though. :-) Cliff Barua - Toronto ------------------------------ Subject: www.level42.nu Children say'85!!!! From: "Pascal Koolen" Date: Thu, 23 Mar 2000 00:36:37 +0100 Hi Levelheaddies, First i would thank Brian Fogsgaard Jensen for sending in the most current interview of Mark King in a Danisch TV-magazine, called "Her & Nu" date februar,3th,2000(!) I've just uploaded a zipfile at www.level42.nu I've found also something interesting on a live tape of Level 42,recorded at Grivegnee hall,Luik (Liege),Belgium at dec.5th,1985. Mark plays in the middle of "Are you hearing" a loud & clear bass-riff of...........CHILDREN SAY!! Strange, ehh,or what? For some of you they want to get "the proof" of it,please let me know,i will upload then a MP3 file of it...... ok,that's all! I think you're right. Compared to some other folks out there, Prince, Janet Jackson, Michael Jackson, Madonna, the band were not as visually stimulating on stage. I've never seen them live. I've only seen Live at Wembly and Fait Accompli. I LOVE them. But they weren't visually stunning. They, quite rightfully, assumed that all they needed was their musicianship (which, of course, kicks ass) and desire to please their fans. Add to that the fact that Mark isn't a model. He's not even a clothes horse. Which makes it much harder to sell the band in the minds of image conscious marketers. If they could have turned Mark (or if Mark would have let them turn him) into a haircut the band ironically might have found more commercial success. I'm not criticizing. I'm just making an observation. You lucky devil, I live in the states and have never seem them live once so I'm drooling with jealousy:-) Meanwhile, how about Phil's work on Hours By the Window and Kouyate? It's been a while since I've heard them and most of my tapes are packed up to move. But I seem to recall the end of Hours By the Window (one of my absolute faves anyway) as truly...ethereal drumming. I didn't know drumming could be ethereal. Or am I thinking of the end of Lying Still? And Kouyate as well as Coup d'etat kick ass. Anybody else got some words for Phil? Terri H.
