Maybe it's the anticipation of the bass solo getting to me... The reason I ask this question is that I have sent my My bands latest album to him on the off chance that we might be able to get him to produce our new stuff!(A long shot I know!) I have heard nothing and am wondering if someone has knicked it or its proping up a mug of coffee in Joe Daflo's. It would be nice to know if it's made it into Marks CD player. Regarding Dennis Bazylinski's question re: bending harmonics on the bass. A quick reply: Bend up a la Mark King etc - Play the harmonic then press on the appropriate string between the head bridge (is it called the nut?) and the tuning peg. Bend down a la Jaco or our old friend Morgan - Press on bass body and headstock in opposite directions to bend the neck outwards slightly. Used more for vibrato than anything else for obvious reasons! No need to touch those tuners. You could always get a bass with a wammy bar. Mark has used one on a recording you know. Have a listen to "Lying Still". In an interview for the first ever issue of "Making Music" magazine back in the 80's he describes using it. In many songs including Kansas City Milkman, Mark strikes a harmonic and seems to bend it up at least a half-tone and then comes back down in pitch (I think Stanley Clarke does something similar in some of his material). Does anyone know how he does this? Is he really bending the string or turning the tuning key? The answer is quite easy. Simply strike the harmonic and then press the string BETWEEN the nut and the tuning peg. The note goes up, and when it is released, it returns to its natural tuning (if your nut and machine heads are up to it). I really was starting to worry when the digest didn't come back as my birthday present on Feb 4th, so I will just consider this a belated one -- thanks, man!!! ;) I am also going to auction off (at Ebay,) my original copy of the LAST digest letter that was sent out before the changeover that struck over 1,100 digesters in the gut. I'm not sure what the price will be, but I'm sure it will get me at least a candy bar --- or something!?!?!?! --> just kidding. I know it will be worth much more than that! Cheers to Monique and Julie for meeting up with us in New Orleans over the weekend. I'm tellin' you -- ya' got to go to N.O. for a visit if you haven't already been. What a blast! Thanks M&J for walking around with us and socializing at such an early morning time! (noon.) Love you guys! Take care all. Calif. ... Eric -- Thanks for bringing back the Digest ... hope your upgrade powers your business to continued success! SoCal LevelFesters from January -- Sorry I didn't make it ... I coach a middle school baseball team and we had our season opener (winter league) on Jan. 15 ... I was especially bummed because I heard Carl and Laurel Mueller (spell?) were there, and I would love to thank them in person for the awesome Forevernow.com. To East Coast Levelheads -- I'm attending a two-month school in Maryland, starting in mid-March ... if there are any Fests being planned for the mid-March to mid-May time period, could someone drop me a line ... ALSO, I've never been to New York City and was wondering if any of you New Yorkers (Winman, Lolita, etc.?) would be willing to show me around, or have a mini-fest get together or something. General (non-Level related) -- I was so glad to see Santana beat out the teeny-bop pack last night at the Grammys ... and Sting winning out over some of them was a real shocker, too -- and definitely cool. I was hoping Brian McKnight would win in R&B, if for no other reason than to make his gig in San Diego tonight (which I'm attending) more lively ... BTW, does anyone out there like McKnight? Anyone notice Dominic Miller (sp?) in Sting's band last night? He is the same guy who played some with Level 42, isn't he? Sorry for the lengthy post ... I am not interested in making any money just expanding my L42 collection. I own all of the "released" albums and vids but am looking for some of the rarer stuff / digest compilations. that are floating around that I can never seem to get hold of............ Strike, pluck or whatever a harmonic on the old 4-stringed lady, then while it's still ringing, you've got to bend the string BETWEEN the Tuner and the Fretboard. It's really tight here on some basses, so it takes a little getting used to. That answer the question? Hope so. Dale K ------------------------------ Subject: Fender Jazz From: Hans de Graaf Organization: World Access Date: Thu, 24 Feb 2000 23:48:39 +0100 Nice to read that the opinion on the Fender Jazz are more or less the same as mine, There is however a big mystery here. As most bass players know, the old Fender Jazz basses are the best sounding ones. David Jacobs wrote about it and I couldn't agree more. I have had the same kind of experience with an old '63 bass. Also in a shop somewhere, I guess it was in Deventer, Holland. And the outcome was very much the same; I didn't buy it. It sounded great even unplugged, it was a fretted bass and it didn't sound anything like my modern Jazz from '95. It was way too expensive so I had to let it go (3500,-- (Guilders aprox 1650 dollars). The shape is the same, the weight is the same, the pickups are the same, (but I played it only un-plugged so I can't really tell). It felt pretty much the same. And now for the twenty million dollar question:WHY DOESN'T IT SOUND THE SAME! Why is it that an old beat-up Fender Jazz sound A LOT better than a "just left the factory" sample? This is NOT something unique for Fenders. I have a home built Jazz copy (I made it frettless) from Ibanez from aprox'67, and that one is closer to the '63 one in the shop than my brand new Mexican from '98. A few possibilities I might name. 1. Is it the wearing finish of the bass, simpler put, the lack of paint on it? 2. Are the pickups different, does the magnetic field change slowly through the years? (Not a very strong one because the phenomena can be heard without the bass plugged in, or is there a acoustic connection between the strings and the magnetic pull of the pickups?) 3. Hand grease! The thing we try so hard polishing off after a sweaty gig, does it soak the wood. changes it vibration. 4. Age? If this is true, than after a while even the '75 or '80 basses would start to sound better. Is this true, are there people out there with such an experience? (Try buy a new bass for your new born baby, just in case he decides to play bass when he is 18!) 5. could it be the fret metal? I don't think so because it happens to frettless basses too. To end this story and put some more mystery in it, I have done ( and still do) some testing. I bought early this year that Mexican frettless. At the same time a friend bought the same bass, at the same shop. He is still one of the best bass players I know but due to his work, he isn't able to play a lot. I play my bass a lot. Compared to my bass, his instrument is like new. Still there is no difference in sound audible, so although it is a short test ( only one year ) I don't think that playing a lot will mean a difference. Ok food for thought I would say, any one??? Mark perhaps, he has an immense experience with all kinds of basses and ever since he not only interested in the slap thing (he played a home made fretless Moon bass (jazz copy) on Forever Now) he might add a lot to this discussion. Wouldn't that be great? Nick Bennet: Thanks for the support mail pall, you're absolutely right, music comes from the heart, but every once in a while there is this mystery that is there to be solved, or at least understood! This is one of them. ------------------------------ Subject: Levelfest, Lyndon Connah From: "Pascal Koolen" Date: Thu, 24 Feb 2000 23:57:58 +0100 Hya Levelheaddies!! I was thinking of getting a bass too (first one). Is there any other bass that offers the performance in that price range? Another question - 4 or 5 string? I play some acoustic guitar now if that matters. So how long does it take to learn to slap anyway? Almost had one of those L42 siting things. I noticed in a parking garage this weekend on the wall was a large nicely colored, painted 'Level 4'. Even looked somewhat like a L42 emblem, w/ the 4 being inside a large circle. Nevermind.. I heard Steely Dan announced a tour. Any dates yet? Brian ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Steely Dan From: "Martin T.
