Thats funny, because I think all 4 original members and at least 2 other ex members have done the same over the last 6 years. Surely all the band aren't rude? >What right has he, a non-digest >member (or at least a member who won't post on his own) to tell us what to >do ... THAT, Alex, is rude. Although I don't agree with Phil at all about sound quality, I think he has every right really. After all, he plays the music, I'm grateful for his opinion. .> what you saw as courageous, I saw as cowardly I don't get this? Everyone knew Phil hates digital remastering anyway (at least, anyone who reads level42.com or Word Machine) why the surprise when we find out that he doesn;t like his own music digitally remastered. At least he's consistent. The most boring part of the digest, are emails like mine here, and emails which just object to other peoples attitude. It's like Mark when he said 'Staring At The Sun' was rubbish (which, despite his attempt to deny he said it, really he did) what's the problem. If Phil want's to tell us not to buy something fair enough, he knows he's not literally stopping us! Similarly a few years ago Crockford told the fans not to buy cheap Level 42 compilation CD's directly in the fan club mag. It was really refreshing to hear the old classics - most of which have rarely been played live b4. Highlights for me were 'True Believers' and 'Lying Still'. Superb. Also went to see The Who on Wednesday night at Wembley - another fantastic gig. Anyone who has seen them on this current tour will surely agree with me when I say that John Entwistle's (whose bass solo went on for what seemed like 10 mins) must be the finest and most enduring rock bassist in the world. Can anyone tell me if Nathan King lives in South East London/Kent? Stupid question I know, but I was at Charing Cross station last night travelling back from Who gig and I'm bloody sure that it was him. Given timings from Camden, it could well have been!!!! Keep funkin' and Up The 'Ammers PS: When asked what he thought about Eriksson, David Beckham replied that they were ok, but he still prefers Vodafone!!!! ------------------------------ Subject: uh, more phil stuff From: Winston Walker Date: Thu, 16 Nov 2000 09:37:44 -0500 I just want to clear up some confusion regarding the Phil/Re-issue snafu. Contrary to Brian Bowman's comment, I do NOT think Phil's comment was self-centered. I never said that, nor have I discussed this with Brian. Evidently he misinterpreted my post. I have privately spoken to Alex Friesen regarding our misunderstanding, and all is clear between the two of us. No hard feelings at all, as is the same way I feel towards Brian. Phil has every right to voice his opinion, and i respect it very much. That doesn't mean I agree with it. It was my fault initially to ASSUME Phil's comments were tainted from whatever problems he and Mark may have or have had. Big mistake on my part, and I apologise. On a related note, I seem to have misplaced my cd re-issue of SITL. It's driving me crazy, as that album is a fave of mine. Hopefully I put it in the wrong jewel case, but with close to 1000 cds, it's gonna take some time finding it. tcoy, Win ------------------------------ Subject: Mark King DVD From: "Laurence F. I know absolutely nothing about how to make DVDs BUT can we have all this alternative view stuff? \Can we have backstage and deleted scenes, can we have photos and stuff on the CD???? This could be really cool. Can we have a really jazzy booklet? I'd be willing to pay , well, just about anything. Any other fans in this part of the world? >Nice to be back, >Neil Percival Errrr, that'd be me Neil...and guess what: I'm 'back' on the Digest too after a lay off. I came back to the fold just in time to catch the booze-related track names - FANTASTIC. (By the way Neil, remember fending delirious Geordie footy fans away from a pregnant woman in that pub?) BILLINGHAM GIG =========== I tried posting the following review of Billingham the day after the gig but with no success (I reckon that fella Hansen's got it in for me): The venue was fairly small - your average small town theatre (it puts on all kinds of shows from kids' theatre to plays to music - Aswad and Boney M were all featured in November). The place was pretty full - I'm not sure about the circles but the stalls were full and maybe 2 or 3 boxes out of 10. The crowd were the usual wide spread of ages and people were pretty atypical. It was a cold, damp, miserable night and the northern crowd were pretty quiet for much of the gig, they took some time to warm up. Though the support act did a great job: it was a female vocalist called, I think, Lorna Dalglish. She was a singer/songwriter accompanied by a keyboard player - though she played herself for a couple of tracks. She had a good voice and is an accomplished writer. She also had a confident and relaxed stage presence (she mentioned she'd played at Ronnie Scott's). Her band is touring later in the year on an Elvis Costello tribute tour. After the interval Mark et al appeared sporting shirts and ties. However Mark was dressed like someone's dad at a wedding reception after a few drinks - his collar and cuffs were flapping open and his tie hung loose, his slacks were ill-fitting. The crowd were, with the exception of a handful of women who obeyed Mark's suggestion to get up and "boogie", seated and polite for the bulk of the gig - though towards the end everyone was standing and clapping - when we all stood Mark looked shocked and said, "It Lives!". (There were the usual hardcore of zealots at the front - didn't recognise any of them). The sound was OK - a little 'noisy' and indistinct when in full flight. I've been a defender of Lyndon in the past but I think he was poor - the weakest link - his solos were uncomfortable to listen to. Gary was his usual manic amazing self and Nathan was as solid as ever. Mark's basses were beautiful - at first I thought they were Jaydee, then Status (my eyesight is rubbish and I was 10 rows back) - they had a very Status shaped head but the bodies looked like a slimmed-down Jaydee - with the through-neck. They had beautiful Alembic-esque woodwork and the LEDs - which didn't just switch on continuously but acted as a sort of output display: they lit up from the body along the length of the neck by varying amounts depending upon the volume of what was being played. Who made them? The band were giving it everything, but it never quite clicked for me. The set was more for the typical 'fan' of L42 (rather than Mark's bass), especially those who have been to a few gigs already - many of the tracks had not been played live for a while - the result of the online vote? I went with my friend and bass tutor who is a very accomplished professional (jazz) bassist who isn't a great fan of Mark King or of slapping but wanted to see him play nevertheless. The set wasn't ideal for winning him over as a fan of Mark's viruosity (don't expect any instrumentals). There was the usual short bass solo during which some people in the crowd bayed aggressive encouragement at Mark, it was actually quite ugly - like being in the crowd at a fight. My friend was impressed of course with Mark's playing but it really didn't bowl him over - he'd been to see Nathan East the week before and said this didn't come close. He WAS very impressed with Gary Husband however, and with Mark's endurance in particular which he thought was amazing - to play THAT hard for a 90 minute set going from one track to the next without drawing breath. PRACTICE AMP ========= Finally, just a quickie about bass kit - I'm looking for a portable practice amp - preferably one I can wear around the house. So far I've only really found one: the 'Pocket Rockit' - does anyone know of/use a really small bass amp (with 'phones) that can be clipped directly into the bass or worn on the belt? NIce to be back, way to go on the Fest and the auction Nigel ------------------------------ Subject: the great debate From: "goldie100" Date: Thu, 16 Nov 2000 16:52:22 -0000 Hi there, First of all, I am probably gonna be the only one not to rave on about the new shows, as I am now a mummy and haven't managed a show since 1989!! however, thanx to everyone for their descriptions of the gigs-reminding me of the times I did manage to see the original band, mainly the time I saw them @ the Brighton Centre (not too big, not too small) when I had the time of my life and actually managed to catch some of MKs flying spit!!. I wanted to contribute to the great debate concering the remasters & a certain Mr Goulds objections. My main concern is freedom of choice and doing what you want to do (a certain Mr Gould used to be quite loud about THAT, listening to the lyrics of "Standing in the light" & "Hot water") Why should anyone really be bothered about what he wants when nobody wanted him to leave the band in the first place?? did he listen to anyone then?. I for one would love to update my L42 collection with ALL the tracks ever made, and if anyone has tried to replace their collection with CDs, as I have, they will know the difficulty involved. I also agree with the fact that Phil really should have his own website to voice his concerns, or at least leave an email address like the rest of us. Phil has earned his living from people like us (although I do realise he has worked hard) and although he hates the subject of "commercialism" - hence leaving the band at their height, he will continue to do so through the likes of remastering. Besides, all my records are pretty precious and I would like to be able to keep them for a very long time - give me CDs so I can listen to the band in all their glory. With all the money Phil makes from these CDs, perhaps he can buy me the whole collection!! Sorry, Phil & the other anti-remasters, I am with the majority!!!! What a FANTASTIC gig!!! (I went completely through the wall paper (=famous Dutch saying...) when they played True Believers!! Great to see Mark using Alembic again; sounds wonderful. Next year I expect Mark to use Trace Elliot as well. Interesting to see how Lyndon tried to dance around on stage, pushing his equipment about ;-) Gary. Hmmmm He looks like he's is doing his very best :-) Nathan: excellent playing. He is there, in a way as Boon was there in the old days (Yeah, yeah, I know.... I can only say so because I'm old. Thank you very much) Outstanding break in one of the songs (failed to remeber which one): They just stopped for 2 seconds, right in the middle of a line Mark sang (of course Mark filling the silence with his famous flagiolette) and then BANG there they went on again. I almost fainted.... Amazing to see how Mark uses his left ring finger in Kansas City Milkman. I have to spent more time on rehearsing :( AND OF COURSE very very nice to meet a lot of digesters whom I'd never met live before!!! As you can see, I had a great wonderful time. Like it was huge (what kind of smiley should I use here??) bye for now Bass regards, Huge Rademaker Get your Free E-mail at http://www.level42.zzn.com ____________________________________________________________ Get your own Web-Based E-mail Service at http://www.zzn.com ------------------------------ Subject: CHECK OUT MARK-KING.COM From: "" Date: Thu, 16 Nov 2000 14:39:48 GMT Hey everyone !!! From: "Mark M Walsham" Date: Fri, 17 Nov 2000 09:10:11 GMT Just wanted to say that the band were excellent last night, and I would especially like to mention that I also thought that Lyndon was superb and spot on! Managed to meet Gary, Lyndon and Nathan after, but the elusive Mr King didn't make an appearance, which was a shame. Anyway, did anyone hear the comment Mark made on stage when he changed from the Blonde Maple Alembic to the dark mahogany one, he said something like 'oh, it sounds like a GB!'. Has Mark now gone off the GB bases and gone back to the Alembics? For me, I think the Alembics do sound better. Anyway, let's await the DVD and Trash 2. With regards to Phil's comments on CD's, I tend to agree, and I would also say that the new re-releases were OK, but I still prefer not only the old vinyl, but the old version CD's. The digital mastering that seems to go on now seems to compress the mid range, flatten the bass and over excentuate the treble. The best thing that I have heard so far with remastering, is that Sony have a system called nosound (or something like that) which removes all the hiss and rubbish from the original recordings, but retains the overall sound or the original. I heard a remaster of an old Animals CD with this system and it was excellent. I also agree that Weave Your Spell on the remasters has a totally different sound, almost like it was remastered in a metal bin! Too much reverb and echo. Anyway, just another 2 bytes... I have not read my other email address(plee @ imerge.co.uk) since Tuesday so it may be possible there are some other bids. If you have emailed my work address, please forward your bids to this one instead... Zildjian 18" K dark crash medium thin cymbal, signed by GH "Best wishes to all those at Britfest 2000 Gary Husband x". Donated by Gary Husband. Bidding at £80. Zildjian 18" Avedis 'A Custom' crash cymbal, signed by GH "My Best to all at Britfest 2000 Gary Husband". Donated by Gary Husband. Bidding at £30. I am very tempted still to advertise these in "Rhythm", so you drummers better start bidding sensible amounts. £30 for Zild A Custom man! They are twice that 2nd hand without the signature! I haven't had any interest in the Mark King framed prints so far, but we do have a picture of the pictures so hopefully Lisa can get that up on the Britfest website over the weekend. What pictures you ask ? Cristina Galagos has donated 4 framed prints of Mark King. This is the very same picture used on the sleeve of the Mark King "Live at the Jazz Cafe" CD. They are approximately 21" x 15" (53cm x 38cm) and the quality is absolutely amazing. The picture shows Mark standing on stage with his Bass around his neck. What I propose to do is them Auction off of them over the next couple of weeks. The top 4 bids will secure these items. Please submit your bids to tazmania @ bigwig.net. I'll try and keep the Digest updated regularly as to the progress of the bidding. Bid # 1 : £50 , My wife has decided she would like to buy me one of these for my Xmas present.
