I adore Rockapella. Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego was a favorite show of mine because of the music. I got hooked on the show due to the music. How ironic that Jeff's a Levelhead!! and he reads his post. Too cool 8^) I look forward to getting your new album, Ciao for now Tianna ------------------------------ Subject: Gavin Harrison, "Romance", John Scofield, Slave/Steve Arrington From: "Anthony Richards" Date: Thu, 16 Mar 2000 10:26:17 -0500 To Norm, Martin and Mikey42: Gavin Harrison was also prominently featured on Incognito's "Inside Life" cd. Lots of funky grooves and stellar playing to be sure! IMHO, this cd features somewhat of an embryonic sound for Incognito (I think their sound really solidified on "Tribes, Scibes and Vibes"). To Hughsie: "Romance" and "Why Are You Leaving" do have a similar groove and feel to them, but the bass and guitar unison lines in "Romance" kind of remind me of "Love Meeting Love". What do you think? To Sam: Mr. John Scofield. What an amazing guitarist! I especially loved his work with Miles Davis (on the Star People, Decoy and You're Under Arrest cds). My favorite John Scofield band of all time was the electric funk/fusion tour de force with Gary Grainger on bass, Robert Aries on keyboards and the pheonominal Dennis Chambers on drums. I've seen this band twice, and they were off the hook both times!! Jazz funk fusion on steroids for sure (in the best possible sense). Digesters who are interested should check out the cds "Blue Matter", "Loud Jazz" (with George Duke on Mini Moog solos) and "Pick Hits Live" for a sample of this band's funk fusion pyrotechnics. Trust me, you won't be disappointed. To Lolita, Winston, Zanchie and Joe: Thanks for your comments regarding the almighty Slave (long live Stellar Fungk!!). Sorry to hear that Mark Adams didn't perform with Slave recently. The band released an amazing nine lps on the Cotillion label (the first three to six more or less featured the original lineup). Several other cds were released on Atlanta based Ichiban Records. Mark, guitarist Danny Webster and percussionist/ trombonist/vocalist Floyd Miller were the only original members left out of a band of nine musicians. IMHO, without Mark's massive bass sound (or Steve Arrington's vocals and drumming), there is no Slave. I'll also have to make sure I get "Steve Arrington's Hall Of Fame I" cd reissue. Along with "Steve Arrington's Hall Of Fame II", these are essential funk recordings for real! Thanx to Zanchie for the heads up on that one. Just a brief posting for Mike and Mark (and the Goulds too..) - Here is a new context to the L42 song Romance I love so much , funny one... I dreamt that L42 are coming together again and heard Mike's voice in my dream - 'Oh baby baby don't give up on me (L42), turn it up and u will see (!)' But the reality is : '..what remains that we're crying alone :(' WHEN IS THE RE-UNION HAPPENING !!! ???? WHEN THIS WORLDMACHINE RUNS OUT OF GAS ???? Sem, I hope that you were joking, but if not, the great Ozzy Osborne is Black Sabbath's vocalist!!! Since we are on a thread discussing favourite Jazz guitarists, Tuck Andress is Mine own! I've experienced Mike Stern, Jon Scofield and Tuck in concert, all more than once. Regarding Whitney Houston damaging her singing voice with cigarettes (I wouldn't know, but if she IS smoking), perhaps she is doing damage BUT some singers have been known to do the damage intentionally in order to add a raspiness to their voice. Bonnie Raitt is one example. Stevie Nicks and Renee Geyer didn't need to take this route in order to have such beautiful raspy voices, but as a vocalist Myself, I understand the interest in having a raspy sounding singing voice, although, I personally would never consider this technique, but, to each their own... Perhaps, only perhaps, this is what Ms. Houston, Jr. is doing. Eric, thank you for bringing up one of My favourite newer bands, the Afro Celt Sound System!!! I have been into this band since their first release of 1996. I was already playing the djembe but it is because of them that I took up the talking drum a while back! Actually, Winston and Lolita helped Me get rid of tickets I had to the second of two Incognito shows in N.Y.C. this past Autumn so that I could make it to the third of four A.C.S.S. shows that I've been to to date!...Thanks again, you two! Eric, Kouyate is the kora player's surname. N'Faly Kouyate is his name. He is from Guinea, as far as I remember. There are seven band members; two are Irish, two are English and the other three are from three different countries in Africa. They also bring a dancer on tour, he is from Guinea or Senegal... Sinead O'Connor and Youth are on their second album and Davy Spillane, Manu Katche and Caroline Lavelle (both whom have recorded with members of Level 42) are on their first album. If you haven't yet figured it out by the company they keep, Afro Celt Sound System is one of the many terrific bands in genius, Peter Gabriel's Real World family! This band is FANTASTIC, especially live/in concert! Check them out, most especially when they play an outdoor festival, at W.O.M.A.D., for example...Get ready to DANCE, even if you are not of the dancing sort! :D...What a GREAT time! Coincidentally, they are on the cover of RHYTHM magazine this month, a wonderful World Music magazine. They play all sorts of hand drums: talking drum, djembe, frame drum, dhol drum, tablas, congas. Also, celtic instruments such as; celtic harp, uilleann pipes, bodhran, tin whistle, low whistle, and fine singing, sometimes in Gealic by Iarla O'Lionaird. And other instruments such as the the large and highly decorated kora, as Eric mentioned, belafon, hurdy gurdy, mandolin, nyatiti, sintar, violin, viola, cello, bass, flute, harmonium, recorder, guitar and keyboards; more recently with quite a bit of dance music sequencing/programming. Again, thank you Eric for bringing up this terrific group, although you judged them as "wacky" and even if only because you connected the great showman of N'Faly Kouyate's surname to the, also terrific, story/song by our beloved Level 42, titled 'Kouyate'! ...sorry for going on sssooooooo long, but, Afro Celt Sound System IS a band worthy of fawning. A warm "hello!" and hug to everyone I met at Zak and Leslie's beautiful home in Glendale, California a couple months ago!!! Thanks for a good time! Hope that things are good for everyone here. I never got any, but I remember he was nice about it. Nice to get a message from Phil. His new site's going straight into my Favourites folder. THANKS Norman ------------------------------ Subject: Bartok directions/review From: John.O'Connell @ Equant.com Date: Fri, 17 Mar 2000 10:42:03 +0000 Sorry for the confusion over the tube station, it was only a couple of days before the gig when Ray Persaud called for confirmation of the directions that I realised that for some strange reason I'd put Kentish Town instead of Chalk Farm in the review. Ok I'm getting old, the eyesights not what it used to be and the London A-Z is just a blur. Visions of a tidal wave of digesters (ok, ten of us) roaming the streets of Kentish Town, I immediately put the full directions on the digest, Bilal updated the web site and Carl put it on Forevernow.com - the wonders of modern science! If any digester knows of some poor souls still wandering around north London pestering the public with "spare some change? and by the way -do you know where Bartok is?" I will gladly arrange food parcels which I'm sure other digesters will contribute towards. As to the gig on Wednesday night - it was so very different to the first Bartok gig. Roland is an accomplished acoustic guitarist and Tabitha has a good voice, its a pity the microphones were the wrong type for singing (Lisa, of BBC World Service fame told me this, she's a closet anorak microphone expert - sorry Lisa the secrets out!) I'll try to do a review if time permits - I've got the playlist, verified by Mike. Nuff said John
