Norm ------------------------------ Subject: From: Hughes Paul J Date: Wed, 15 Mar 2000 11:57:10 -0000 On the subject of 'Forever Now' my favourite track, 'Romance' , has a 'Why Are You Leaving?' kinda feel - does any one agree? For those of us that have been ardent followers of the boys since '81, the change over from live/energetic funksters was evident on 'RITF'. Commercially, this was a fantastic album, yet it didn't have the same edge that earlier albums had. Understandably, L42 needed to reach out to a wider audience and 'RITF' served this purpose excellently. Fellow funkers might want to check out 'Shakatak's' 'Night Birds' album- very much in the 'Early Tapes' & 'Level 42' vein - whilst there is definite L42 feel to some 'Style Council' tracks - 'The Lodgers' in particular. Winston - I'm sure 'LIAPW' was played at the Albert Hall - if the stiffs at the record companies ever agree to release a live album from this gig it'd be fantastic. Keep on funkin' & up the 'Ammers!!! HUGHSIE ------------------------------ Subject: NEWS From: "Morgan42" Date: Wed, 15 Mar 2000 13:46:43 +0100 Hi all, I just received this message from Phil Gould about Andy Sojka : http://www.level42.com/news-03-2000.html Hi Morgan Will let you know when my web-site's coming on-stream. I've been a bit side-tracked over the last few weeks and have dropped the ball somewhat. Hopefully not too long now. Apologies to anyone who may have repeatedly gone to the page. I was so very sorry to hear about Andy Sojka. I had absolutely no idea he was in that kind of shape until I read the obituary. Although I never found the time to say this to him while he was alive, something which I now profoundly regret, I really appreciate the break he gave us and the belief he showed. The relationship he had with the band didn't last very long but was absolutely crucial in terms of our development. He understood what was going on musically, how the scene was changing, and saw a way in which we might fit in, and it was at his instigation that Boon wrote the lyrics to 'Love Meeting Love' (we were just jamming on the groove when Andy first heard it) and Mark had a go at singing it (quite successfully as it turned out!). That's when things really kicked off! Those early months, our first record deal, our first gigs, hearing 'Love Meeting Love' on the radio for the first time, playing football on Tooting Common after a days recording the stuff which came to be known as 'The Early Tapes', were some of the happiest times of my life. Andy was a big part of all that and I'll never forget it! OK here it comes Mike Stern is brilliant and Tony Martin, whoMMM I thought to be Black Sabbaths lead singer, is probably very good too, but my friends -to quote the BEST movie of all time- THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE...and that has to be IMH but oh so pedant opinion Mister John Scofield. Thanks to all of you who have visited and keep an eye as more changes and additions are planned for the short - term. On another note, is it worth investing in Frontpage 2000 to revamp my web site - any ideas ? Finally, I need to get hold of some blank CDs for music. I bought some CDRs but these don't work - any ideas ? Till the sun goes down..... There are no keyboards on the record and i did that because as a guitarist i felt it would represent what i do better. All the drums are programmed using loops and various percussion sounds by a guy called Mel Wesson. He is fantastic and i was very happy that he agreed to do the album. Bill (Liesegang) plays some things on the album mainly guitar loops and weird sound effects.I mixed the album at his studio using an engineer called Kit Woolven. Stone Bowtie was a working title for the project when i started it. It was just one of those weird names I think of, but in the end it seemed sensible to name it after one of the tracks hence 'Seriously' which will be the opening track on the album. The name Zen Gangsters comes from a friends band several years ago and when they finished i asked if i could use the name sometime because i loved it. The album will be mail order only as per Marks c.d. I have done the whole thing myself so it is a low budget situation so there are a few rough edges but i was more interested in making it sound exciting.I hope i have managed to do that. I am still waiting to master the album." March 15th: "At the moment i am rethinking some of the mixes.I want the album to be the best it can be given the circumstances i am recording under so there will be a bit of a delay until i make my mind up.I have decided on the running order now tho' and the track list will be as follows; Seriously? Fade out Same thing Mine Drag Morning blue Goodbye Whosville Satellite Love kills overtime (previous title) Sweeter Canon" Lars ------------------------------ Subject: nokia ringtone From: "simon the magician" Date: Wed, 15 Mar 2000 15:57:17 +0100 I've already downloaded HIMH to my Nokia 9110 and sounds great ( I used the intro of the extended version ; Unreached levels part four). These are courtesy of Vince (aka Synth)--wherever you are these days. They were originally ripped by him several years ago and I just came across them and decided to put them up. They were ripped back when level 2 mpeg audio was the best compression you could do. I since re-encoded them as level 3 mpegs to shrink the file size (it dropped from about 7.2mb to 5.8mb) but they're still stuck with the same audio limitations of the old level 2 streams so the sound quality is not perfect. I tried downgrading the bitrate too to save more disk space, but came out with a sound that was far more distorted than the original. Anyway, the new tracks are the ADSC (Dave 'O') mix of To Be With You Again, and the Porky Rides Again mix of Forever Now. If anyone can rip a better mp3, let me know and I'll tell you how to get it to me. My copies are both on vinyl and my turntable is in storage at the moment. http://www.neurotoxin.net/~djames/level42/mp3.html Enjoy! dan ------------------------------ Subject: Gavin Harrison From: "Martin T. It was a site to see Mike and the Post Pop Federation perform at this venue. Tonight was a good night had by one and all! Great to see my old friends, John and Janet O'Connell, Bilal (it was great that you could stay in London and make the effort), Jose, Sue, Lisa H, David and Yuko and the many others. I am sure that MIKELINDUP.COM will have a review of the night so I will not keep this message long. Just like to say that Mike has alot of new material which I am sure will be released in the not too distant future. Even though Level 42 have split up, enjoy the music being produced today by the former band members and remember this 'LEVEL 42 DIDN'T ONLY CONSIST OF MARK KING!' Time has to move on and things do change! All the best and thanks Mike for a good night, more please! Hansen" Organization: Worldmachine Technologies Corporation Date: Thu, 16 Mar 2000 01:36:03 -0500 (EST) Hey -- just a quickie to say that I'm watching Late Night with Conan O'Brien, and there's some wacky african-drum-meets-irish-traditional fusion band called "Afro Celt Sound System" (!!!) Anyways, there's a guy playing a strange strings/drum/bowl-like instrument with the word "Kouyate" inscribed on it. Does this mean something in some language? (like 'peace' or something... who knows?!) I always thought it was just a name that L42 they came up with for the song... cheers Eric -- Eric J. From: ZW75 @ aol.com Date: Thu, 16 Mar 2000 02:56:30 EST Hey y'all, Slave is definitely one of all time great funk bands, I love that Best of compliation, Mark Adams can make that bass talk. I have most of their albums. They reissued "Slave" and "Stone Jam" too. I wish they could do that with the Level 42 CDs which are on the backburner (more like fell behind the stove). Also check out Steve Arrington's Hall of Fame:I which was re issued on CD (with 3 unreleased tracks) a few years back. I love that one, too. That has "Weak At The Knees" on it and another jam called "You Meet My Approval". I didn't know Kevin Eubanks was playing guitar on it. He playing some funky guitar. I have his solo CD "Face to Face" w/Marcus Miller and Ron Carter. It's a hard to find CD, but pick it up if you can. Sorry to hear about Andy Sojka who took a risk with L42 and helped make them famous. Take care. Peace, Zanchie Whitehead ------------------------------ Subject: Slave From: Joe Aranda Date: Thu, 16 Mar 2000 03:47:29 -0500 This is a group I grew up on. Mark Adams was one of my big bass influences. He was wicked. They have been doing some shows here and there lately. I saw them a few summers ago and was disappointed to see only about 3 original members. Mark Adams was not with them. It was kinda like the Temptations nowadays!! lol Hey Lolita, Winston and Greg!! Joe ------------------------------ Subject: Bartok From: andrew.boyington @ vf.vodafone.co.uk Date: Thu, 16 Mar 2000 09:35:43 -0000 Hi, What a great evening's entertainment and it was free - nice venue too, only a bit too smokey. Mike played 10 tracks (9 different ones - he played 1 track twice). Sun Goes down was the only L42 track, also he played nothing from Changes or from his solo tracks which have been heard previously at Brighton and Ascot. The 9 tracks were all written and composed by the new group Post Pop Federation. All 3 members taking the credit for different tracks. The other 2 members are Tabitha and Roland Chadwick. The description from the 1st March at Bartok at Mikelindup.com describes the scene nicely. The only problem with that artical is that it said Bartok was near the Kentish Town Tube Station. Its not ! its actually near Chalk Farm Tube station. Thanks to the digest member who wrote in the day before the event and pointed this out. I tried directory enquiries but drew a blank - no listing for Bartok. I wondered what attracted Mike to that venue - then as I was walking back to the car I noticed that there were lots of shops speciallising in Taro Cards and all that sought of thing and I remembered Mike's interest in the similar stalls at the Parklife festival in Ascot last year - probably just a coincidence. Will the guy with the Video send me an email - I may have something to trade for a copy of that tape.
