Someone wrote yesterday about why Mark hasn't played any material from the Forever Now and Guaranteed albums. My guess (IMHO) is that he is still under severe restraint from RCA regaring the performance of these tracks from these two albums, as Level 42 did break their contract with RCA/BMG after the breakup in October 1994. I believe that they (L42) had at least one to two more albums under that contract, and that the Albert Hall gig was supposed to be one of those. It is interesting to note that when I spoke to Mike Lindup at the Jazz Cafe, he had mentioned to me that he just got the license for Changes from Polydor and that he was free to do what he like with the album, notice that Polydor had the license for 10 years (and basically did nothing with it!). If someone can explain it better, why is it that L42 owned copyright to their music, but these 'record' companies can dictate which songs can/cannot be played live or in any other format? What's the point? My only hope is to hear A Kinder Eye live sometime in the near future. Best Regards, Mikey42 BTW: Loz, nice post about Andy Sojka, I agree we might not have known about L42 if Andy hadn't of listen to John Gould and taken that financial risk. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Please remove from mailing list From: Onlyson @ aol.com Date: Mon, 13 Mar 2000 11:01:33 EST I have enjoyed being on your list for the past couple of years. Mind you that I'm not correcting him....I'm just joking with him (you know that you're my homey dude). I distinctly remember Jill Jones being at The Ritz for two reasons. One, because a Jill Jones fan had asked me if he could get my spot in front of the stage to get closer to Jill. And finally, because I reached out and grabbed Jill's hand while she was singing (I was feelin' the funk, you know?), and my ex-wife slapped my hand and said "YOU BETTER PUT YOUR HAND DOWN!!" If uninterested, please begin scrolling now xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx (In response to Terri's comments about great funk bands missing in action): In 1976, there was an incredible funk band out of Dayton, Ohio by the name of Slave. They had a huge hit with their first single "Slide", and a few years later with "Just A Touch Of Love" (both songs have been sampled by various artists over the years). Their bass player Mark Adams was an incredible funk bassist, not because he was a slapper and popper in the style of Mark King (although he can slap and pop quite well), but he had an incredibly funky "sound". The way he attacked the strings, and the way he had his rig set up, led to what I call a very unique bass voice in funk music. With over thirteen recordings to their credit, Slave seems to have disappeared from the face of the Earth. Does anyone out there know where this great funk band might be now? Any Digesters out there from Dayton, Ohio? Speaking of funky bassists who don't necessarily slap and pop, Verdine White of Earth, Wind and Fire is another bassist who's not much on slap and pop, but has an incredibly funky sound. Anyone out there who likes Earth, Wind & Fire can certainly attest to movin' and groovin' to the funky bass lines that Verdine can lay down with ease. Finally (with a quick "shout out" to Sean Green and Winston), Wounded Bird Records (www.woundedbird.com) is re-releasing three of Billy Cobham's early 70's fusion cds, "Crosswinds", "Total Eclipse" and "Shabazz" in April (I think it's safe to assume that Mr. King will be happy about the news of this release, due to his love of Billy's drumming). Wounded Bird has previously re-released on cd "Melodies" by The Jan Hammer Group. Keyboardist of choice by guitarists Mahavishnu John McLaughlin and Jeff Beck, this is a wonderful cd that features Jan's infamous "synthesizer guitar sound". Check em' out. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx END OF SCROLLING MESSAGE Thanks to everyone who continues to read and comment about the band and music we all love so much. TSGD98 - I may be able to get hold of a copy or two on 12", so if anybody is still looking for it please let me know. Price would be about 10 GBP, and I don't want to make that sort of outlay unless I know someone wants it. Now then - a plethora of stuff to get your ears around. 1) For those who love jazz guitar - Martin Taylor Martin Taylor, unbeknownst to all manner of people who've heard of Ronny Jordan and Tony Remy, is the most gifted British jazz guitarist around. In fact, if he were American he'd be a name you all knew already. His label Linn Records have had the extreme good sense to re-package his first three CDs in a box set, for the sniptastic price of 19.99 (these things normally sell at 14.99 each), with free shipping worldwide. The first two, Don't Fret! and Change of Heart, also feature the unparalleled accompaniment of David Newton on piano. The third, Artistry, is a devastating solo album - forget your Stanley Jordan showboating (which I love at times) and your Tuck Andress delicacy (which I also love at times - his Man In The Mirror is gorgeous), this is a man who plays jazz guitar the old-fashioned way, but better than anybody else around today. Just check out his Cherokee, it damn near tears the roof off. Can be ordered from their website linnrecords.com, please tell them I sent you and ask them if they'll give me one of their 2000 quid CD players. 2) For those who love Gary Husband - Richard Niles & Friends Just received this e-mail from Richard Niles (that might not mean anything to you lot, but in this house it's tantamount to saying Mark King just popped in to get my reassurance about his bass playing): "GIG: Richard Niles & Friends - Steve Hamilton, Gary Husband, Peter Wareham, Sam Burgess, Tony Walthers March 20 &21 Pizza Express Jazz Club, Dean Street, London W1 (0171 439 8722) New CD: "Club Deranged" NUCOOL Records (NC1001) Greetings, to all friends and fans of New Jazz Standards. I hope you won't mind if I indulge in a bit of blatant self-promotion to tell you about my new CD, "Club Deranged", my 2nd solo album featuring 80s star and mega-hipster KID CREOLE, released on my own label NUCOOL Records (NC1001). ... He then talks about who he's arranged and produced (Ray Charles, Pat Metheny, Tina Turner, Paul McCartney, Pet Shop Boys, even Boyzone and Westlife for our younger readers), the singers who are on the album (Kid Creole, Eliza, Carla Vallet, Tony Walthers), and the rather more impressive instrumentalists (the brilliant British sax phenomenon Nigel Hitchcock, Nelson Rangell, Pete Wareham, Martin Shaw (Jamiroquai), Danny Gottlieb, Neal Wilkinson, Gary Husband - "Multitalented Gary then plays piano on one track just to confuse everybody" - Nick Beggs on one track "spanking the Chapman Stick until its cheeks are red and pouting!", and Scottish pianist Steve Hamilton.)" 3) For those who love Anglo-Indian drum'n'bass a cappella samba rap flamenco funk - Nitin Sawhney Can't say I was really expecting to enjoy the Nitin Sawhney gig on Saturday night, but it was absolutely astonishing. Staggeringly eclectic, each of the musical styles above was covered during the evening - not all at the same time but usually three or four at a go. If it sounds like tokenism it wasn't - this was a man who clearly loves all music and sees no reason why he shouldn't play it, mix it and spread it any way he sees fit. It was all carried off with utmost panache and confidence, a veritable tour de force which is unlike anything you've ever heard before. If you get a chance to see him, I strongly advise it. And why do i think that: Well when Mark and Mike decided to do another Forever now Album after the RCA one i think that they loved to do some songs..from it on the new one. But also i think when a songwriter writes new songs and they think they a nice/great or the best they will make a demo of it or play it at the studio to make it better and so on... When there are songs who not will make it to the demostage or something i think that mark and mike never will putt it on a record... Some songs did not made it to the second release of forever now. Why? Maybe there was other stuff lying around which was better in their ears.. But now to the part why does Mark play it never live these days... I think that the "normal" fans of l42 don't know many of these songs, we hard core fans know every song. But when you are a a guy like mark king and when you are asked to play at de Duyvis knabbel party in the jaarbeurs in the netherlands and you are told you may only play this and that he had to make a choice, play or not play..... no difficult one i think... And he has so many songs to choose from.... and he choose the one who are the nicest to play when he not have to choose from a setlist made by others..... This is my eurocent......... From: RPERSAUD12 @ aol.com Date: Mon, 13 Mar 2000 19:03:05 EST Hello, Just a reminder that Mike Lindup is performing at the venue called the 'BARTOK' on Wednesday 15th March. It would be great for fans of Mike to make the effort and give their support at this gig. Details of the gig can be found on Mikelindup.com. Level 42 are gone but not forgotten, with their contribution to music in the 80's and mid 90's. Also please do not forget that Level 42 didnot only comprise of Mark King! It did have other members and to me what gets overlooked is the effort and work done by Mike Lindup. After all he was one of the founder members of the band. Level 42 have split up but members are still producing music on their own today! Do not get stuck in the past, look to the future and the works currently on offer by Mr Mike Lindup. I am sure he will play the hugely successful and much loved old stuff, but just look and listen to what he is doing now and enjoy the music. Hope you all can come and give your support to Mike Lindup at the BARTOK on Wednesday. All the best! I hope nobody boots me off the Digest either cause I have seriously mixed feelings about Forever Now and Guaranteed too. I think Mark has a thing for pop/rock. I think he really loves it and thus we get songs like Heaven in My Hands, Guaranteed and Forever Now. I love Heaven in My Hands but it shocked the hell out of me when I first heard it because it sounded so rocky. But I got used to it then fell in love with it, especially thanks to the Tom Lord Alge remix. But Guaranteed never moved me. Neither did Forever Now. I have the Resurgence version of Forever Now and I only like half of it: Billy's Gone, Past Lives, The Bends, Play Me, Sunbed Song, Heart on the Line, Love in a Peaceful world, Talking In Your Sleep and a Mike Lindup song whose title escapes me now. That's it. As for Guaranteed album, I thought Overtime was more true to their sound. I like the lyrics of My Father's Shoes but not the song (I think Mark plays it too quickly; he should slow the tempo). However, A Kinder Eye Takes my breath away. As do The Ape, Lasso the Moon, Her Big Day. I like the Guaranteed album much more than I like the Forever Now album and I feel like its sacrilege to confess it. Thanks for making it easier Huge.
