Lars-Ove Larsson ------------------------------ Subject: Fender Jazz From: "David Jacobs (Server 1)" Date: Wed, 23 Feb 2000 11:27:12 -0000 Hans de Graaf wrote some great stuff about Jazz Basses - I'd like to add some further stuff. It's funny how with all this technology stuff, we find ourselves going back to the Fender. Its' even more interesting to know that some 'exotic basses' have strong elements of the Jazz engrained in them (the JayDee Supernatural has a neck modelled on a '63 Jazz). I've played some Fenders, and they were pretty dire. However, I was bowled over when I played a really beat up old Fretless Jazz in a guitar store. This old bird was really beat, and the strings were quite old. However, the sound - well, what can I tell you - it sang like the sweetest bird! And the feel of the instrument was like no other I have found in a long time! I think because it had been 'played' and cherished by a musician, it had absorbed some of those good vibes, and was there - oozing pure players sex! There is no other way to describe a find like this, and sadly I didn't buy it! However, I did buy a fretless JayDee Supernatural, and that was just as good (but it didn't have that effect in the shop, because it hadn't been looked after). So, my advise to anyone thinking of buying a Fender (of any kind) is this. Forget the name, pre-conceptions - and just play the damned thing! See if it feels, balances, sounds good (acoustically and amp'd). What is the action like? What condition is the finish in? If all these things say to you "good deal" - then get it! I've found really crap basses, that sound really good and play well! A typical example is the Hohner (laugh away) Steinberger copies (B2a I think)?! Most were a bit bad, but I've played really nice ones too (EMG Select pickups etc). There's a tutor who plays at the Musicians Institute (I think) with a beard (does lots of session work) - and he plays a 5 string version, and it sounds great! So what does it come down to? - What you feel comfortable with, I guess - and if you're a Fender man, stick with it! I've played JD's for over 10 years now, and I can't go to anything else (and I don't want to)! I think folks sometimes forget that www.mark-king.com seems to be more dedicated a site than the others. It is MARKS site, so naturally it's gonna focus on him, and not the band he used to be a member of. If you want general info, check out Carl and Morgan's sites, or the 2 Lisa's, etc. Unless we want Paul to start making up news. :-) Pat, thanks for the Groove Armada info. Soundsi nteresting, but find it hard to believe that 'house' music came out of them listening to the Early Tapes. I was always under the impression it started in Chicago, and have never heard the L42 connection before. I picked up the Lessons In Love cover a few weeks ago, and to be honest, the dance remix is not bad at all. This is NOT the version currently on Carl's web site. This version is a bit bland, but it's surely not the worst cover I've ever heard, and it's cool to hear someone else do a take on this tune. I'd forgotten that this tune is almost 14 years old!! I dig the Jazz Cafe cd, although i'd prefer no pauses between tracks, and one more track to fill the cd. Lack of audience noise doesn't bother me in the least. Like I care to hear the audience sing out of tune, and in the wrong spot yet again? ha, ha,ha later, Win ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V2000 #1 From: Violatiana @ aol.com Date: Wed, 23 Feb 2000 08:55:54 EST Hi all, Boy it's nice to see you all back Especially all you LOVE BUGS. So how many Couples, Children does that make? If the Birth rate goes up everytime Barry White has a concert, what can we attribute to Mr. King? The Get-together Man? Maybe Oh well I had to give it a shot. Ciao for now Tianna Scot Joke to follow A Scotsman walks into a bar in Glasgow, orders three pints and sits in the back of the room, drinking a sip out of each one in turn. When he finishes them, he comes back to the bar and orders three more. The bartender asks him, "You know, a pint goes flat after I draw it; it would taste better if you bought one at a time." The Scotsman replies, "Well, you see, I have two brothers. One is in America, the other in Canada, and I'm here in Glasgow. When we all left home, we promised that we'd drink this way to remember the days when we drank together." The bartender admits that this is a nice custom, and leaves it there. The Scotsman becomes a regular in the bar, and always drinks the same way: He orders three pints and drinks them in turn. One day, he comes in and orders two pints. All the other regulars notice and fall silent. When he comes back to the bar for the second round, the bartender says, "I don't want to intrude on your grief, but I wanted to offer my condolences on your great loss." The Scotsman looks confused for a moment, then a light dawns in his eye and he laughs. "Oh, no," he says, "everyone's fine. I've just quit drinking." ------------------------------ Subject: Live @ Jazz Cafe CD From: "Mark M Walsham" Date: Wed, 23 Feb 2000 15:01:09 -0000 Just to add more fuel to the fire, I have to agree with Chris M's comments of yesterday, I have really only played the LAJC CD a few times as it is far to over produced. I remember being very excited recieving it in the post, and that soon disappeared on listening to it, it's just not quite in the spirit of a live album, it's too clean. That's why APP and LAW are so much better, you can hear the crowd and when you turn it up, you feel like you're there. That just don't happen with the LAJC cd. Mind you, it doesn't detract from the excellent performance of the band! (Apart from Jakko's extremely bad taste in clothes and dodgy hair do), but man, what a guitar player! I must admit to not keeping up as well as I usually do right before the Digest went away, but did Mark put something out after "Trash" - and if so, how do I get it? Also, I cannot get Mike's "Changes" here in the states (I'm in Philadelphia). The websites I check either don't have it, or can't get it. Any ideas - let me know. From: Daniel James Date: Wed, 23 Feb 2000 14:06:51 -0800 Well hello everyone! Good to be back, now I have yet more in my inbox that I don't have enough time to keep up with :) Still, I've missed my daily musings. Sorry I missed out on the Jazz Cafe gigs, it sounded like a lot of fun. Still, I had a great time wandering about the UK on my own at the end of the year. A big thanks to Shannon, Adam and the Hankinsons and to Lisa Devlin and Colin Payne for all being such wonderful hosts in their respective hometowns (and for saving me the cost of nearly a weeks' lodging). Anyway, as much as I've enjoyed traveling around the UK with the group the past few times, there were so many things that I'd wanted to do that I never had time for, so I opted to make this trip alone instead of meeting up with the gang the month before. I finally got to take in a bunch of the museums and do some other general exploring. This weekend, I was in the Bay Area and found a Japanese pressing of the UK version of World Machine, complete with the bonus track and a Japanese lyric sheet. It's still there if anyone wants it (Amoeba Records on Telegraph in Berkeley)--I'm not enough of a completist to get something like that. To those planning the "Levelfest2000", let us know when you set a date. I'm planning a trip to Amsterdam to visit friends sometime in the late spring to early fall. I don't imagine it's much of a train ride to where you're planning it. Then again, there was some discussion of a fest in Rotterdamn too which would certainly be more convenient :) Okay then, I'm back to work... Happy Levels... dan ------------------------------ Subject: Trash Live CD From: "Richard Maybury" Date: Wed, 23 Feb 2000 22:29:10 -0000 Howdy Folks, I think this CD is still very good and I'm glad Mark released it and bought it> I've got a recording of the One Man Tour and I think the overall band performance, particularly the singing was better on the Trash tour than the One Man tour. Allan Holdsworth Gary Barnacle John Thirkell Krys Mach Annie McCaig Leeroy (surname) - guy from the early days... Gavin Harrison 2. Speaking of early days, would anyone be kind enough to send me or know the whereabouts of some old L:42 photos from the early 80s : 1980 to 1984. 3. Does anyone know where I can get hold of the other issues (issue 6 onwards) of the "Pursuit of 42" ? 4. Is anyone gonna record the Mike Lindup gig ? Answers on a postcard please.... First of all, as many of you know already, the server that holds the Real Media as well as the mp3 files had been down for many, many months due to a relocation (sound familiar???). Anyway, it's been back up for a month or so now, so feel free to watch all the videos you want on http://forevernow.com or listen to some mp3s at: http://www.neurotoxin.net/~djames/level42/mp3.html Over the holidays, I had a request from someone to post an entire album in mp3 format. I'm sorry, but I'm already walking a very thin line here by providing as much as I do. It's not my intention to provide these tunes as a substitute for paying for the albums themselves. Very little of what is available on that page is not for sale through normal channels, so please support your favourite band by paying for their music. With that said, the recently exposed cover version of Lessons in Love by N-dre is available on that link (scroll to the bottom of the page to the related tracks section). Of the three versions that were sent to me, I posted the version that I thought sucked the least. I've also added two new tracks that use Level 42 samples. The first is by a somewhat well known acid jazz type band called the Bucketheads and includes a sample of Starchild. Unfortunately, I think this track is one of their weaker ones. The other track is a tune called "Got it Going On" and samples "Why are you Leaving?" Enjoy! dan ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Bass question From: Dennis Bazylinski Date: Wed, 23 Feb 2000 16:44:47 -0600 Hello all: I have a bass question that I really need answered. In many songs including Kansas City Milkman, Mark strikes a harmonic and seems to bend it up at least a half-tone and then comes back down in pitch (I think Stanley Clarke does something similar in some of his material). Does anyone know how he does this? Is he really bending the string or turning the tuning key? If this is really involved, please Email me privately at dbazylin @ iastate.edu so the rest of digest members don't get bored with all the bass talk. Thanks a lot.
