With rergard to the requests for songs at the Gigs, I am sure I am not in the minority in saying that I hope to hear some of the more commercial stuff, Something about you is my favourite track ever (L42 or otherwise) and the opportunity to hear it sung live does not occur very often. Does any one agree with me?? Jim Pritchard Jim Pritchard ------------------------------ Subject: *** BRITFEST BRITFEST BRITFEST *** From: Date: Tue, 15 Aug 2000 12:16:29 +0100 Its that time of the year again whe thoughts turn toward the BritFest. I have a few suitable venues in mind already, but I need to get a date sorted... The potential dates for the Britfest are: Saturday 11th November (no gig this night) Friday 17th November (no gig this night) Saturday the 18th (if not many people are going to the Colne gig?) So, for those of you who would wish to attend this years Britfest:- I would like to know which gigs people will be attending and/or preferences on dates (listed above) for the BritFest. This is especially true for those of you travelling from outside the UK so we can pick the best date to maximise the attendance. I can't promise to keep everyone happy, but we are going to try our best... Maybe you are holding off booking your tickets until the BF is sorted, either way, please let me know. I'll try and post this information up on a BF2K web page somewhere (to be decided, written, hosted, Any volunteers ?) Bit sad though that the DJ, Lynn Parsons, claimed to have most of the LFT stuff in her collection yet admitted to only recently learning how the boys came to be called Level 42!!!! I was also intrigued to hear that Mark used to live in Bedford Hill, Streatham. Anyone who knows this 'fine' South London landmark will know that it is second only to Soho as London's biggest red light district - many a young cherry has been lost in and around this street (not mine though!!!)!!! What a sad git I am for knowing a pathetic fact like that!!!! PS: Anyone going the Sunday night JC gig fancy meeting for a beer in 'The Worlds End'??? Shame they only play RITF and LIL... should have played some good old stuff. Who knows.. perhaps she's even a quiet digester! Anyway, I think she did a good job in publicising the gigs so HURRY UP and get your tickets, we need to have the Digest Gang at the front again.. Lisa Hack and I are so far going for the first and last Jazz Cafe gigs... but perhaps we'll be tempted to attend some others! The 5 sets are priced at $22 to $27 for each set. At around $125 for everything, its hardly the two for one deal that was expected. But since they are imports, the price goes up. Amazon lists them as a preorder and the release date as Sept 5th. The question is will Audiophile Imports be any cheaper? I don't live very far from where Audiophile Imports is so I will drive down to pick them up if it proves to be advantageous. Actually, the Amazon warehouse is right down the street from me too but I doubt I could make a purchase there. ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Subject: Regurgitated songs From: "Jackson, Lolita" Date: Tue, 15 Aug 2000 09:04:01 -0400 >>I would like to propose that the gigs DO NOT include >>the songs that have been played to death, over and >>over again like: >>Chinese Way >>Something About You >>Hot Water >>Love Games >>Lessons In Love >>Sorry if this is tooooo controver-cee-al, but I can't >>handle standing through another half hour of those >>songs. Whilst we all love em, wouldn't be great to >>hear some different songs, never heard live before or >>from many years ago. Whoever wrote this read my mind! Not simply because I can't stand Chinese Way or Lessons In Love [sorry, but I don't love every song - blind allegiance with an uncritical ear is not my strong suit], but three out of five of these songs are played every single gig. The band had almost 150 songs, so why do we always hear the same old stuff? I understand that these were the hits and crowd pleasers, but it just seems really crazy to me that we have to hear Chinese Way every gig. As I said in a previous post, it has become the 'Green Earrings' [a song played to death by Steely Dan/Donald Fagan] of Level 42dom. I almost wish he would be like Joe Sample. I have seen Joe Sample countless times, and he never seems to play the same set. I have even seen him twice in the same week and the setlist is always different. It makes it well worth spending the money to hear him multiple times, and I don't feel like I'm burned out because I never know what to expect. It would be nice to have that same feeling here, rather than simply praying for snippets of Mr. Pink or Dune Tune doodled between songs. I realize the difficulty in doing that since this is not really Level 42, but hope springs eternal. Gould is up to these days? His website has been blank for ages and both Rhythm and Modern Drummer magazine have gone VERY quiet re. his drumming activities. At least his brother is bringing out a new album via mail order at what I assume will be a sensible price, unlike On Drums which costs sixty odd quid at present - does anyone know how I can get it cheaper / copied? Also, can anyone help re. A Physical Presence album? The car kindly chewed up my tape and I can't find the vinyl version for love nor money. I am ready to part with the latter if someone can bag me a copy of either or both formats in good nick of course. Thanks all, Adam The Washing Machine Stops. ------------------------------ Subject: I met Mark King today From: John Osborne Date: Tue, 15 Aug 2000 17:03:31 +0100 Hi all Mark King's a really great bloke. I'd not met him before today, but he came in to do a load of local radio interviews on ISDN and telephone from the studios here. I brought in my copy of "One Man" as well as "World Machine" for him to sign and the bloke from his plugging company working for Polydor gave me a promo copy of "The Pursuit of Accidents" which MK signed as well. We chatted about his Jazz Cafe gigs last year and his latest solo albums and he thanked me for supporting him. I listened to bits of the interviews he did to the local radio stations. He did mention that Trash volume 2 is on it's way (but after the interviews he to me that he wasn't sure if it would be before the November shows). Also he kept saying that he's semi-retired now and said that family life and generally enjoying life were far more important than the pressures of dealing with the music business. He sounded generally content with his life and was very grateful for the support from the fans. I'll have to have a listen to the interviews to see if there are any other details worth mentioning here. If you're reading this in Wales, listen to Mark on Alan Thompson's Saturday Social on Radio Wales because this interview was particularly chatty and MK had to pick his 5 favourite songs which will be included in an hour long jukebox programme this coming weekend. I'm really in shock now and I can't concentrate on work. It was fantastic to meet him Bye for now John This e-mail, and any attachment, is confidential. I was thrilled to hear that Mark was going to appear on James's show despite the slagging (from some japester on the Digest) that I had got for suggesting that Mark should send the Whale a copy of Trash and the Jazz Cafe Live CD! Well done to Mrs Pink for being the first fan to get on the air! Nice one, gal! I often listen to James Whale, but haven't listened to the show for a while as I have to be up ultra early for ward rounds at the hospital. However, I made an exception. We need to collaborate to try and get the interviews on the web for those who didn't hear them. Maybe some audio expert could help transferring them from tape to PC and then Real Audio format for the web. What's the situation on copyright? I am sure the respective interviews are copyright of the BBC and Talk Sport and permission should be sought. For those who listened to it, I am sure you will agree it was a great interview. It was more relaxed and humorous than the one on Radio 2, probably reflecting the difference in audience. One of James's regular callers (Sevakis), who drives for Boy George, called in to say he liked the flute on Mark's album! Perhaps he meant the flute on Influences? Mark thought Sevakis's voice was dodgy and couldn't decide if the caller was a man or a woman. Sevakis has got a great laugh too which was once sampled for James's show. Anyone who heard it will know what I mean. Sorry, that's situation comedy for you! Incidentally, Sevakis explained that he gave Gary Husband a lift to the Hammy Odeon gigs in 1991. Many thanks to all the US digesters who so kindly e-mailed me with information for my proposed elective in surgery at the Mayo Clinic or the Cleveland Clinic. I am getting round to e-mailing you all personally. I couldn't help felling that Mark loves his golf in a big way! I am thinking of taking it up as most of the medical profession play as a nice way to relax and socialise. It will be a bit of a sin if I leave Scotland without playing the game properly!
