From: "Tanner, Adam" Date: Fri, 11 Aug 2000 12:37:46 +0100 Hello everyone, my name is Adam, I live in Kent in England and I have finally discovered this digest! So this is where I can ask all those nagging questions that have cropped up over the years about Level 42 and contribute little nuggets of information whenever I uncover them. The websites I have visited thus far are great and have answered plenty of my queries already. But first, a little bit about myself. I first got into the World's greatest band on Boxing Day 1987 when a relative bought me Running In The Family. Within the first few bars of Lessons In Love I recognised the song from when it was released the year before (it had been one of my favourites but I didn't know who it was by) and by the end of the tape I had decided to try and get everything they had ever done. I had started playing the drums earlier that year which was handy as ever since then I have played to their songs and rate Phil Gould and Gary Husband as two of the most inventive drummers around. Without their music to drum to I would have probably have ended up playing rock and blues numbers as everyone else I knew was into Genesis, Pink Floyd or Dire Straits. No disrespect to these bands, but Level 42 saved my playing from a life of 4/4s!!! Typically, the Gould brothers left the band just before I got into them, and my biggest regret is that I never got to see the original Fab Four live, although I have seen the band in one of their reincarnated line-ups. Aside from music I love F1 racing, because there's always fresh controversy just around the corner (no pun intended), golf (but only when the sun is out) and eating and drinking (who doesn't?). I have numerous queries for anyone with the answers, but I won't overload you all straight away. In fact, I'd like to start with a request. As I mentioned I have been playing the drums for thirteen years now, and I wondered if there is a Level 42 tribute band in the offing who want to get something started. I have heard that one already exists, but considering there are about 4 ABBA tribute bands around at the moment, I'm sure a second L42 band wouldn't go amiss. Any would-be Kings, Lindups and co sign up here! It will be great to hear from you! Finally, one query to start the ball rolling before I sign off: Mike Trevillion took the front cover photograph used on the World Machine album, but does anyone know where it was taken? It looks like a mountain of coal or something, but I doubt its in Wales! - perhaps someone knows more about the location? Thanks for listening, you've been a fantastic crowd (as Mark would say) Till later Adam ------------------------------ Subject: Bass Solo (Live at Whitley) From: "Morgan Roussel" Date: Fri, 11 Aug 2000 15:27:51 +0200 Hello, Check out this page at MP3.com and listen to 'Bass Solo' http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/56/scott_whitley.html Live at Wembley or Whitley ? eheh. A very kind member of the digest has managed to supply me with volumes 1 & 3 but has had a huge headache trying to do 2 & 4 ! Cheers Steve My flies wide open.... ------------------------------ Subject: Anyone remember Shakatak? From: "brian bacon" Date: Fri, 11 Aug 2000 17:40:50 GMT Another great Brit Funk band around during the 80s were Level 42s Polydor stablemates Shakatak. Check out the "Invitations" and "Nightbirds" albums from around 1982 and you'll hear a striking resemblance to early Level. Bill Sharpe is a fantastic keyboard/piano player and George Anderson jnr is a very capable slapper. You're gonna have a job finding these albums in the big shops as they are very scarce. I don't think they even exist on CD. I bought them from a second hand shop on vinyl for £1 each. Anyhow if you can get hold of them they're well worth it. Later Shakatak material went down the same road as later Level 42 stuff and became more pop oriented so keep away fom anything post 1985. Keep funkin' Brian. ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Subject: Check it out!
