I'm not sure whether they'll be live or pre-rec, but I guess they'll be promoting the reissues. I'll post more details soon. Even more exciting news is that I'm going to meet him! What am I going to say? What will I get him to sign from my L42/MK solo stuff? Bye for now John O This e-mail, and any attachment, is confidential. One thing I forgot to mention was being relaxed, it helps no end. Now in high energy stuff it can be quite difficult to relax as you want to bop and dance about (er well I do ! :o)) When you watch people like Mark King and Tony Levin it's very easy to put the instrument down and go why bother. I've done it a few times (the flamenco slap solo in the Live At Wembley vid stopped me in my tracks a few years ago). Spending a week away from an instrument is just as valuable as slaving away on it for three hours a night, five nights a week. Go to Starbucks, have a Grande Latte, chat to a few friends and get away from bass playing for a few hours. Then come back to it, it's amazing how things slot in to place and work first time. I actually got my first setback last night, when we decided to drop Running In The Family as the vocal line was too low of all things. I certainly wasn't comfortable with it. I thought The Chinese Way would be the killer for me, but I've had a great time (got blood blisters on the end of my plucking fingers though). Then I got the news that we are headlining the afternoon section of the gig. So the tribute is on at 5.30pm GMT. My new bass arrived 40 mins before the rehearsal, the wood is fantastic, a bubinga, basswood, bubinga sandwich. The slap sound was wonderful, the neck is much faster and responsive than the USA Fender Jazz I borrowed (still a really nice bass though). I just need to change the strings as the 40-100's are tearing my skin off. Can't wait for this gig........ Peace Jase (bicycle clips at the ready). ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Subject: Napster From: "Willem en Kirsti" Date: Thu, 10 Aug 2000 15:01:55 +0200 I've created a chatroom on Napster, feel free to check if someone's out there ! look for....level42 (view all chatrooms first) cheers willem ------------------------------ Subject: A wonderful artist in Montreal From: "J. A. Lemyre" Date: Thu, 10 Aug 2000 09:20:04 -0400 Hi! everybody! What an evening to remember!Mike Lindup and DaLata. The place: Tokyo Bar on St-Laurent Street, Montreal. Guests: Around 100 people and 2 fans. At first Doug and I arrived and the soundcheck was on.Mike was singing and checking the sound of his keyboards(Korg,Prophet-5 and Rhodes). At the end of it,we introduced ourselves. He was in a hurry heading back to the hotel but told us that he will see us when he'll come back for the gig .Lovely chap as always! The gig was supposed to begin at midnight but started only at 00:30 Am.I was just in front of the keyboards waiting when Doug informed me to look on the side.Mike was dressing himself in the Ladies toilets'corridor.Very different from Level 42 time talking to myself. He came to the bar asking for some water and went back in this little corridor with the rest of the band waiting to go on stage. That was our chance to talk to him and so we did.He signed my "Changes"CD booklet and Doug's "True Colours"Cd booklet. We took some pictures, of course!I talked about our first meeting in 1994 in Brighton and the second one in London. His hair were still wet from a recent shower. We talked about Montreal. The last time he was in Montreal was in 1987.I know! I was there at the Spectrum. Also, I asked about his album release and he said hopefuly in a month or so.That will be in his website. We chatted about himself more than Level 42 (Sorry! Guys!)and this is where it starts to get personal. My 15 minutes with him were minutes to remember. He hasn't changed much physically since 1994 but he is more relaxed. Why a long absence after Level 42 ? He needed some times for himself and to explore different kind of music. The only thing I can say is that his keyboards playing is still Mike Lindup's style.I can recognize his way of playing anywhere. He was playing a lot with his Prophet-5 for some sounds effects which reminded me of early Level 42. The show was fantastic. The band was absolutely great.Mike sang beautifully with Liliana.Mike was in his element and really enjoyed himself.I was 2 feet away from him.We could get DaLata Cd for $20 and I recommend it.Even if Mike doesn't play on this CD,this band is absolutely wonderful. If you like percussion and great rhythms, you'll be serve and also you'll get the feeling of the concert that you just heard.Liliana has a voice that you can not forget.A wonderful evening! It was great to see him play and sing again.A wonderful artist was in Montreal and I felt so lucky to be there. To be the witness of his talents! If the band goes around your place: PLEASE GO!You won't get disappointed. P.S.: I can not wait to see all those lovely photos that I took yesterday .At least I have souvenirs! ------------------------------ Subject: RE: RE ISSUES From: "Ronald Kuipers" Date: Thu, 10 Aug 2000 18:28:32 +0200 Hai, >I don't subscribe to the digest very much, but I must say I am getting so >excited about the re-issues I'm nearly wetting myself!!!! Well not me I wouldn't do that kind of thing before I turn 80 or so. But seriously...I'm not so excited about those. Of course I will buy them all a.s.a.p. but I can't help thinking about what could have been. Looking at the "new" tracklistings of World Machine and Staring at the sun I'm thinking nothing new here. Looking back almost 3 years I guess, there were rumours about tracks like; It's not the same for us (demo) 6:15 D7 4:45 some untitled instrumentals Heaven in my hands (guitarpella) 5:51 Take a look (alternative version) 7:17 Or what about Hot water (Full lenght not mastermix) Or take a physical presence to add a 80min CD for just 3 tracks, man are those guys stupide?? They could have add some more live songs like UHHHH let me think dunno A physical presence for example. I know it came from a later era but still 60 min of unfilled space what a waste. And for the above track now we know for sure we will never get those. I know for a fact some people have a couple of unreleased material I also have some of that stuff not much tough and with poor poor sound quality. Well the wait is almost over. I've just bought my tix for the Robin 2 gig just outside Brum. Is anyone else goin'? The venue has a capacity of 400 so it's going to be cosy. Nov 9 is the day after my birthday so what a present :o) I only hope I can get back from the Corrs gig in Milan in time for Mark's gig. Can anyone tell me if Mark is playing at the Music Live show at the NEC Birmingham this year? As it is on in November again. Last years 45 min set was awesome and he nearly forgot to mention Ashdown Amps (ooops!). I'd advise any musicians to get themselves down to the show for some mega cheap deals on basses, guitars, drums and all kinds of FX gear. I want a 5 string so I'll be there for sure. Also does anyone know if Da Lata are playing any gigs in the Midlands area? Keep funkin' Brian. ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Subject: Pink, Mueller, Levelfest, and Stuff... From: "M. Payne" Date: Thu, 10 Aug 2000 12:37:00 CDT Now that I am back to work and recovering from that nasty cold, I have the following comments to render: TRAVEL DEALS: There were NEW airfares posted for the UK this morning, so if you haven't purchased your tickets to see Mark in November and you are travelling from the USA/Canada, PLEASE let me know and I can help maybe get you there! As the US$ is lower against the UK£ (lowest in quite some time) this may be the best and most economical time to go! The exchange rate (for Lisa) US$1.49 = UK£1.00. MRS PINK, it must have been a dream then, oh-well, or maybe it was Marcus! I just thought since you'd won the National Lottery and all, that we would have benefited in some sort of way! :) I wanted to say that Carl Mueller site http://www.forevernow.com has done a GREAT job keeping the site up to date and full of GREAT stuff. The NEW album covers and tracklisting was NICE to see! This site should be a requirement for every new digest peerson to view. Maybe it will get awarded again this year, I hope! Thanks CARL! :) LEVELFEST DFW - Not too far away now, I wanted to clarify that activities are going to happen that Friday night, ALL DAY SATURDAY, and a end sometime early PM on Sunday. But the BIG EVENTS will occur on the Saturday, October 28, 2000 from 3PM and onward....there is still time to register at levelfest_dfw @ hotmail.com. BTW, if you can wait until November, those people going over for Mark's tour will be able to buy the re-issues when they get there, I am sure that they will still be available! Thanks for those digesters who got to speak to Mike Lindup and ask him those questions that we all wanted to ask. Nice to know that he is happy doing what he is doing and still is as humble and friendly to 'us' fans. Finally, ARE WE GOING TO SEE TRASH 2, prior to the November gigs? I aggree, I very rarely go to these venues, and the trend these days is for club/pub door staff or `bouncers` (as we in old blighty call them) is to try and look cool, wearing long black trench coats, black roll neck sweaters black bomber jackets and sunglasses worn at night??is that cool. Perhaps Paul H (The bottom end) , from the once famous Level 43, can make contact with MK or his management via his web site, and request that in future consideration be given to suitable venues for ALL ages, and without employing monkeys on the door. Well, just to follow up Greg's post in yesterday's digest, I have to say that meeting Mike Lindup and actually having a nice sitdown chat with him was truly a great highlight for me at a rough time. Mike was a real class act and a very interesting conversationalist. I know I speak for Greg when I say it really was memorable evening. Greg pretty much covered all the bases on our discussion, I think. There were a few other odds and ends. I was very curious as to when the last time he was in New York. Turns out it was 1990, when he and Mark were here to mix Guaranteed at the Hit Factory. It was interesting to hear Mike talk about the original concept of Forever Now, how they really went into it thinking like a trio - that is, Mark on bass, Mike on keys and Phil on drums. Obviously, they got away from that as time went on. But the sparse sound you hear during they keyboard solo of Past Lives - was basically the original concept of the project, according to Mike. I also asked Mike if he was still doing the autoracing thing. He said it had become a bit too expensive of a hobby, so he hadn't been doing it much more. He also revealed he had broken his thumb in what I assume was a small racing accident, which probably tempered his enthusiasm. But he says he still loves the sport of it. Greg had steered the conversation of a more soulful Level 42 sound on Forever Now, which made me recall how great the band sounded and how into it they were playing "Free" with Will Downing during the 1989 Princess Trust concert. Mike says he's actually never seen the video of that show and that he'd like to get a copy of it. Since I have it on laser disc, maybe I can ship one to Bilal and he can get it to Mike. Speaking of Bilal, Mike is very appreciative for his work with the website - not surprisingly. We also briefly got on the conversation of Wally Badarou and that he had recently spoken to him for the first time in awhile. Mike revealed that he would like to record an album with Wally, which I thought was very interesting. And for his current projects, Mike just had his Piano album mastered this past week and is in the process of figuring out to distribute it. Obviously, it will be through the Internet in one way or another. There is a vocal/song album ready to go , as well, though I don't think that one is around the corner. Finally, I must say as much as meeting Mike was a thrill, getting to see him play and REALLY enjoy what he was playing was equally exciting. He was completely into it. He really got off on a very receptive audience. And he hasn't missed a step with his playing or singing. After the show, a very enthusiastic Mike came up to me and beamed, "Now, THAT was fun!" Indeed it was. Very funny with some great details - Spinal Tap all over again :-)) Also, no doubt you've seen on www.mark-king.com the list of Radio and TV appearances Mark will be doing next week to promote the re-issues.
