Can't wait to hear all those tracks that I may have forgotten about but will more than likely remember all the lyrics as soon as I hear the first notes of the intro. Really has sparked my interest in the band again, I don't know if anyone else has had the same experience, but songs that weren't my particular faves at the time are now. Times and taste change I suppose..... Hi Sarah, I got to see it on the lunchtime edition and thought it was excellent (nice shirt Mark!) as I work in the area (Winchester) - unfortunately I live in Guildford which is South East and couldn't see/video the evening show. doh! I've been playing 19 years, and it's only been a few years that I've added singing leads (been singing backups forever!!). The bassline has to be pretty automatic so you can concentrate on delivering the vocal performance. Practice each part very slowly at first, then and more dynamics and speed as you become more comfortable. When I first saw L42 live (NYC, World Machine Tour) I stopped playing for months. I felt why bother, I'll never be as good as MK, as far as playing and singing together. Well guess what?-I'm still not as good as MK, but I'm 100% better than I was before. So just work at it, you'll eventually get it!! He is now > 100% an IOW person and does not like leaving the Island. The > programme was a Countryways spot on ITV local news (today was the > Troggs, Reg Presley and, yawn, crop circles). Looks like that's why he doesn't want to tour the US or the Netherlands. He's older and wiser. Doesn't sound like it's from "The Pier" (That was a southern UK regional BBC programme). Was this "South Today" as reported in yesterday's digest? Regards, Steve ps. I'll be on holiday from this Friday. I sincerely home my "vacation" message doesn't feature at the beginning of each digest for the next two weeks. Seeing Mark in November for the first time along with Gary Husbands, Jakko & Nathan in 1999 & now Mike Lindup with Da Lata, I've almost seen Level 42, yeah I know there not playing as one entity but it's all good, it's more than I could have hoped for. Now all that's left are the Boon's, will it happen? Doubt it! Da Lata... well what can I say ..... First off, if your there to listen to Mike specifically..... fogedabowdit. Although Mike does sing it's with the lead, he is not visible as an individual but as an accompaniment with other band members. He is however right up front & you can see & feel his emphasis as he reckons with his rig. Those facial expressions are the best! The band as a whole create & sum up the true expression of authentic Brazilian / South American art of sound to say the least. Everyone in the pub was groovin to the tunes body's swaying & feet a~stomping. Truly a great experience see & feel. I was all in all truly happy to be able to hang out with the gang once again, Laurie, Bob C, Greg Jamate, Winston, Lolita, & Jen a new comer to the New York 42 crew & of course Mike Lindup. I've finally found the Gary Husbands .. Improvisation & Interplay for $28 ducks. Can't wait to see it. As far as strings go, well everyone whom visits this digest & plays the bass really let go over the past couple of weeks & it was really great to hear from experienced players, but it all comes down to individual preference & the buckaroonis to pay for them. Viv .........checkin out. __o _ \<,_ (_)/ (_) ------------------------------ Subject: Chat with Mike Lindup From: Date: Thu, 10 Aug 2000 00:36:17 -0400 Hi, had a levelheaded evening Sunday and would like to share it with fellow digesters: Went to the Da Lata show mainly to see Mike playing keys. My buddy Bob C and I arrived early for the chance to talk a bit with Mike. A few minutes pass, and up to the venue walked Mike alone. I will try to remember the conversation but I must qualify that I am writing this from 4 days' memory. Hopefully, Bob C will post with anything interesting l leave out. We introduce ourselves and Mike graciously signs our compact disk inserts. Bob asks if the Piano album is still in the works. Mike answers that just last week he had finished getting the hard parts done, and it should soon be ready for release. Bob asked; in an interview Mark mentioned in the later years, many of the other band members contributed the bass lines to the songs. Which ones did Mike contribute to? Mike; Children Say was Phil on bass. Something About You was me. On the demo of All Over You, I play bass (and did not slap). My guess was that the band created the Lessons In Love bass line. Mike; No that was Mark. Bob's guess was that Mike contributed the bass to Hot Water. Mike; no that was Mark too. At this point, Mike has 16 minutes til he meets someone and asks if we'd like to get some coffee. Would we?! There's a Starbucks across the street and the 3 of us head there. Bob steps up, won't let this guest to our home country pay for a drink, and buys the drinks all around. I still owe Bob for that coffee :):). I asked about Forever Now: Forever now for me had a different sound. It's more soulful and the songs seem far better produced. Was there something different with the production you did to achieve this? Mike; the concept with Forever Now was to leave a lot of space to play with a loose feeling. The major input for Forever Now came from the three of us (Mike, Mark and Phil). Greg - This comes across to me toward the end 'The Bends'. Before too long, it was time for Mike to meet his acquaintance and we headed back to the venue. That was about what I remember. Bob C should post more. We then met up with fellow digesters Lolita, Win, Vivient, Jen, Dan J and Laure. We had a first class location for the show, at tables just next to Mike's array of keyboards. If chatting with Mike wasn't enough, after the venue I receive a good bye kiss from the lovely Laure Grandpierre, as her (boyfriend?) looked on jealously. Am I lucky guy or what? My spirit is free, Greg J
