Just a few responses to some of the comments in the 3/9/00 edition of the digest. To J.W.C. Bronski: I agree. You can definitely hear the Mahavishnu Orchestra/John McLaughlin/Stanley Clarke influences in Mark's bass playing on the tracks that you indicated. You can also tell that (former Santana bassist) Doug Rauch's bass style had a pretty big influence on Mark's bass playing as well. As you know, Mark's also a big fan of jazz fusion drummers Billy Cobham and Lenny White. You can definitely hear their influence in Mark's own drum style, most particularly on "The Essential" from (drum roll please....= ..) Influences, and from what I've heard on Trash thus far. To Dale K: The only Jamiroquai cd I own at the moment is "The Return Of The Space Cowboy", but it's definitely been getting a lot of play in my cd player. An incredibly funky feel good cd for sure! Additional Jamiroquai cds will definitely be making their way into my cd collection shortly (as soon as my wallet stops bleeding from all of my current financial expenditures). To Lee: The Cameo song that you're referring to is called "She's Strange". Cameo has been around since the seventies, and has consistently put out some very funky cds. As you may recall, they had a big hit in the 80's with the songs "Word Up" and "Candy" (most recently sampled by the Prince of Pop Rap, Will Smith). PolyGram has a very good "Best Of Cameo" compilation (from their Funk Essentials collection) that's definitely a must have for all fans of the funk. One more word on bassist Doug Rauch (R.I.P.). For someone who's had such an influence on Mark's bass playing, sadly it seems that not many people (and in particular even some bassists) know about Doug's legacy to the world of bass playing. Mark has mentioned him in print on several occassions, ad I urge all fans of Mark King's bass playing to check out Doug's playing as well. You can check out the following cd recordings that feature Doug's playing: Santana "Caravanserai" Santana "Welcome" Santana "Lotus" Lenny White "Venusian Summer" That's all for now. Keep it funky with Mark King and Level 42 in da Y2G y'all! "Funky T", a.k.a. What is more important though is your ignorant supposition that California HATH no history. Oh Contrair Mon Frair!!!!!! Johann Sutter came here and violated a bunch of Native American women birth several sets of what would soon inhabit Sacramento along with the influx of Alcoholic Gold minors and Mormons (No need to elaborate there) who all got together, drove off the indians after having there way with them, polluted the river system with all sorts of mining techniques and then declared Sacramento Capitol after Monterrey couldn't come up with a hip enough night club. There's your history you ignoramous. As for our Footies, well our local professional indoor soccer league, The Knights, would.........well, if you bring Oxford here we'll uh....or were you talking about Rugby?.... anyway, hows England's National Hockey Team doing?????? So history or not, This Fluffy Bunny is damn proud of all the ass beating wev've endured and all the different walks of life we've screwed over, in fact to quote Tori Amos "I'm only happy when I'm sad" or more true to my personality "We're gonna have a real good time, cause life is good." It's a "One Man" Advance CD. It says on it May 18,1999 (us) release. It has different artwork (no booklet), and the CD itself is half shiny/sparkly, which is neat. I also have the British/Eagle release. This one says Pyramid/Rhino on it. I haven't decided on which one to sell. I didn't think the album itself was that great (sorry guys), so I could sell both. If someone wants one or both, make me an offer. thanks. Mark took my canon 1984 Olympic Commemorative camera, made fun of it, and I informed him that since I was an alternate on the team it was a freebie. He laughed and proceeded to take pictures of the two of us without any flash! We were both laughing and having a great time. Mike just rolled his eyes at us and told Mark to take a "nice picture" of us. I had gotten in because a friend was a bouncer there and I was seated upstairs in the VIP section on the balcony. I knew every word of every song and was dancing my butt off. His manager came over to me after the show and asked me if I had ever met the guys. I said no, and he said wait up here until I come back for you. Sure enough about 20 minutes later he brought me down to wait by the back/side exit door. Phil and Boon said hello and got on the bus and that's when Mark and Mike came out. I have 3 good but somewhat dark pictures from that concert and I cherish them dearly. The next night I drive out to NYC but I was unable to get in because the bouncer said I did not look like my picture and I couldn't be that old. I informed him that my birthday would be in a few weeks and I would be 21 he said no dice. I hung around but I was unable to get another picture although Mike saw me and smiled, (my evening back then was complete) Mark was in an intense conversation with a fellow regarding bass sounds so, that was it for me. It's only natural to hear some of the same ideas. If you like the L42 instrumentals, look into Jan Hammer's "The Early Years" album.
