For this Level 42 tribute that I'm doing this Saturday it's been a case of really working hard on the vocals. The basslines have been in my head and hands for years and as long as the drummer is in the pocket then I don't ask for anything else. As for matching the bass playing and the vocals ahhh a different subject. The first rehearsal I hardly sang at all and then slowly got the courage to get up to the microphone. Some songs are pretty easy (Hot Water and Love Games just sound great), but the finger style stuff has been hard work, The Chinese Way is a good example because the bassline has to be tight and there are some long vocal lines as well. My advice, start slowly and make sure you have the bassline going on autopilot and concentrate on the vocals. If you want to see me make a terminal fool of myself then Fibbers in York (UK) are having their birthday bash gig where we'll be playing (about 4pm GMT in the afternoon). Just hope my Bubinga four string arrives and I can get it set up in time. There is a webcam at Fibbers www.fibbers.co.uk Should be a laugh. Have you all noticed how good the digests have been the last few weeks ?....a stunning return to form. I've really enjoyed the threads about: 16 bit vs 24 bit The Re-issues Da Lata Mark's upcoming gigs The voting on Mark-king.com for the 3 tracks........ Seems an obvious thing to say but just goes to prove that the digest is only as good as the subject matter that we talk about. After a long period of relatively nothing we now have much to discuss, and it's great. Anyone know what happened to TRASH 2 ? , Seem to remember reading that it would be the first release from Mark in 2000 but has yet to materialise. I just wanted to say that I found all the re-issues available for pre-order now at cduniverse.com. The release date they have is September 5. Some of them are listed as $17.99 while others are listed at $21.99. Don't know the reason for the difference in prices. When you click on them to read about the album it doesn't give a track listing but it does say that the albums are remastered with bonus tracks. So hopefully, cd universe knows what it's talking about and there is light at the end of the tunnel for seeing the re-issuse in the U.S. soon. But just to be on the safe side, I'm ordering mine from cd zone, tower europe, or one of the other overseas places. I want mine in August! dave from Seattle ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Subject: POLYGRAM STATEMENT From: "M. Payne" Date: Tue, 08 Aug 2000 12:42:09 CDT I just spoke to Harvey Wantan, Manager of Polydor US Catalogue/Releases at Universal, which now incorporates Polygram in North America. He basically followed Winman's posted. Harvey stated that sadly these L42 Re-Issues will not be domestically produced here in the USA. Universal had the option to participate in the world-wide release, but they declined the purchase and promo of this set months ago. He said that in the USA, Universial ALWAYS releases items like this set on a Tuesday, not a Monday anyway. I asked him if there was a slight chance of any of the albums being releases at a later date, he said from the time they make the decision of release and assign it a catalogue number until the time it is commercially available to the public is about a 9-10 months process, and that decision would not be made until the US arm felt that these releases were doing 'well' in the markets that they had already been released in, so basically looking at over a year and a half from the UK release date. But went on to say that he does not see these new albums ever being manufactured/produced/released from the US arm of Polydor. (FACT: It is quicker to produce a baby than a CD of L42) So basically Polygram is turning their backs on L42, yet once again, I think we know why Mark has NO current interest or desire to come back over this way, what market/company would support him? Alright, I'll stop moaning about it now! Anyway, at least we have the Internet now for those Import orders, so this isn't so much a blow as it could have been. I am sure that Audiophile Imports will have them aplenty, I just wonder how much they will charge for them. Besides, I thought I read in today's digest that Mrs. Pink was going buy all of the North American digesters the entire set, what a nice gesture, three cheers for Mrs. Pink! How on earth would there be a reference to L42? Well, the book features Mr Mike Vernon, producer of early L42 albums! He was very much into the R&B and Blues scenes of this period, but later moved on to produce L42 (which he states in the book, and I quote "The most sucessful project I've been involved with in the last couple of years was Level 42 which is a sort of jazz/funk band. We've had two gold albums, then I lost the production to a couple of guys from Earth, Wind and Fire, not because I didn't do a good job, but because they wanted a change in production..." I also saw his nifty littel comment at the end about my so called offer - well Payne, I did not make any such offer but that is why I am mailing today to put that straight!!!!!!! :-) He's a cheeky git you know guys and we really have to keep an eye on him before he goes over the top again. Anyway, what i wanted to say is for all thos US'ers out there who may experience some difficulty in getting the re-issues via the web or other channels, drop me a mail when the time comes and i will see what i can do for you and get them out to you. What i will do in the meantime is get a quote from the post office to find out how much the postage will cost for the sets and then give you a total figure for them. that way you will know how much to send me to re imburse me and know that there are no hidden charges. I in no way mean to make money out of your misfortune thanks to a greedy record company. so, let me make that enquiry and i will post the total cost to the digest. that way, should any of you experience difficulties in obtaining the reissues, you can mail me and i can get them out to you. i hope this all helps. Mikey will probabaly trnaslate my GBP into USD for you all too to help out ;-) regards and best wishes Lisa 'Mrs Pink' ================================================================ EASY and FREE access to your email anywhere: http://Mailreader.com/ ================================================================ ------------------------------ Subject: Marky on the box From: Steve Robson Organization: Cadence Design Systems Date: Wed, 09 Aug 2000 10:27:58 +0100 Greeting pop-pickers, A colleague alerted me to the fact that Mark was on TV yesterday: > Also, did you see Mark King on the box yesterday, if not, remind me to > tell you about it.
