From: dirk.vael @ lu.arthurandersen.com Date: Thu, 3 Aug 2000 14:31:06 +0100 I have some very cool house tracks of this guy (of years ago), but this really struck me!!! (go to website of one of my fave house labels, Paper Recordings UK) http://paper.state51.co.uk/people/crispinjglover.html And about 24 vs 16 bit: 16 bit which was obtained from 24bit ALWAYS sounds much BETTER than a simple 16-16 mastering. Compare it with a photo taken at 960x720 and then resized to 640x480 than a photo taken with a 640x480 resolution camera. Once you zoom in (=like listening very carefully to music) you'll notice a richer detail. Eg, L42's first album sounds very metallic, I noticed recently when comparing a Starchild 1987 remix with the original from the album... The 1987 thing sounds so much warmer, fuller, more bass etc... I wonder what it'll give on the remasters... Hopefully it won't be the same engineer who did Mark King's official One Man album... very bad sound *******************Internet Email Confidentiality Footer******************* Privileged/Confidential Information may be contained in this message. Keep in mind that Polydor approved and did this remastering aome time ago, and they were NOT expected to sell 2 albums for the price of one at that point. I think you WILL hear a difference when they go back to the ORIG multitrack tapes, and redo everything. When the original cd's came out they just used the 2 track masters from the vinyl versions, so i think cleaner sound is gonna be evident. trust me :-) Ok, here is why I think Mark King is not doing any touring in the US or anywhere else outside the UK.....money. Someone is gonna have to pay for all the travel, hotels, gear transports, etc. It's quite a bit easier when a record company is footing the bill for this stuff. I assume is real easy for the guys to play the UK, as they can all drive or take the tube to the gigs, and head home after the gigs. I'm sure Mark would be more than happy to play anywhere, IF someone is gonna help with the cost involved. later, Win ------------------------------ Subject: Perspectives From: Greatanger @ aol.com Date: Thu, 3 Aug 2000 09:52:09 EDT << Saw MK in November and ML twice last month... For the US digesters: why don't you come over to here, as you like Legal drugs, Tulips and Bike's (Not to forget the wooden shoes and mills. Maybe we can trade against your, BIG BiGGER BIGGEST Hamburgers, your Cowboys, your Ranches, Your statue of freedom, Your big houses, big Cars, ASF.,....) >> It's really amusing, the way we think we know something about each other... Cowboys (except for the (American rules) football team) are virtually nonexistent anymore. Ranches are wide open spaces of overgrazed dirt with oil drilling rights already sold. Yes, there are big houses, if you've got the money... many, many, many people don't. Ditto on the big cars... a luxury SUV (the currently popular, ludicrously gas-guzzling, oxymoronic ("luxury" and "utility" in the same breath?) status symbol) can cost as much as twice my yearly salary, and twice (or more) of the yearly salary of most of the people I've ever met. I saw the Statue of Liberty once, from a plane, on a connection to Connecticut. I couldn't afford to get out there for the tour. I'd say it's a safe bet that most Americans have never and will never see it in person. I don't mean to belittle the most fortunate Lolita, but it sure as hell ain't everybody who can spend that kind of money to cross the ocean whenever she wants to go see a concert. I've never been out of the US at all - not for lack of interest, but for lack of cash. I'm not b*tching about being poor - success in my perspective is not simply financial - but it'd be nice not to be reminded constantly about how it figures in others' lives. I won't argue about the BIG, BIGGER, BIGGEST hamburgers, though. You should see me barbecue. :) I'm hoping to get Trash for my birthday this month. I expect I'll be saving for the next year or so for the remasters. And also this: thank you, Lolita, and gromit (Mike) for AYGB... I have been listening constantly to it for three weeks. Can't Walk You Home is magnificent, and I'm delighted finally to hear it. Ann ------------------------------ Subject: Are you hearing what I hear? From: "M. Payne" Date: Thu, 03 Aug 2000 08:56:01 CDT Hey YAWL, After reading the entire digest a few minutes ago and seeing the different views of this 16-22 bit remastering, I do have something that may help settle this debate, or at least make it more interesting :) As I posted before, I purchased the TFF Re-Issues/Re-Mastered series, AND right from the very first track, I noticed no "high-hissing" and very clear and concise sounds, I played the old CD, then the new one..It sound like the whole band has been brought forward, reminded me of the Q-Sound that we had back in the early 1990's, but much much better! ....and to be honest, who cares if it doesn't measure up to some peoples expectatons, you are getting a NEW copy (scratch-free) of a L42 album that you can archive, for about half the price of what you paid for the disc upon its release way back when! Mikey PS: My younger sister, aged 10, loves MK's One Man album, although she thought that the lyrics in Swimming With Sky, was Swimming With This Guy, reminds me of a Bill Wilson story, saying his kids were singing Hey Dude in LIAPW! :) ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Subject: Slave From: "Anthony Richards" Date: Thu, 03 Aug 2000 12:06:44 -0400 Greetings to the worldwide posse of Levelheads, funkateers and intergalacti= c, syncoptated, groovalicious beings. I'm on vacation, going to the Grand Canyon, and I left your address at home :( I also wrote the post about people whining 'cause MK's not in their country - I realize now that you gotta get up and go. I'm about to hang at the Grand Canyon (North Rim) for three amazing days, and it occurs to me that many folks around the globe would like to see that as much or more as hearing MK. So I'm back to "let's all just appreciate what we have while we can." And traveling to see a sight or hear a sound is very cool - like a pilgrimage - and I know at the Grand Canyon in August, there will be tons of Europeans there! I hope one day to make the pilgrimage to England to hear MK, until then I'll just continue to wear white, bow five times a day towards the Isle of Wight, and circle my stack of Level 42 albums seven times. faithfully submitted, -Tom ------------------------------ Subject: All a bit technical?!! From: Philip.O'Brien @ boi.ie Date: Thu, 03 Aug 2000 14:50:11 +0000 (GB) Are we not all losing the plot here a little bit? (excuse the pun!) Any fan worth his/her salt is going to buy the re-issues if not for the simple reason that they have extra/live tracks, so why waste time going on about bits and bytes?!! I have to say the extra tracks on the other Forever Now album are absolutely excellent. Why weren't these tracks on the original version? Does anyone know of any good music shops in Amsterdam, as I'm going over for the Ireland soccer match in September? Request for info on a KRAMER bass. From: "Anthony Richards" Date: Thu, 03 Aug 2000 12:52:06 -0400 Greetings to all again! OK, this one is for all the bassists out there. Recently, I asked you for some advice on a good starter bass to get. Thanks for all of the responses you sent. I've got another bit of advice to ask you, if you please. The link to the website below will take you to a page for the Kramer Focus 420S Bass. It is a Precision Bass copy, and it sells for $89.00 US dollars. The price is so low because this is suppossed to be the factory direct price: http://www.musicyo.com/product_specs.asp?pf_id357 I'm by no means a fierce bassist by trade, but since I'm just starting out, and the price seems to be oh so right, I thought that this bass might be a good, low cost option for a first bass. My question to you all is, have any of you bassists out there ever played a Kramer bass, or own one currently? What do you think of them (playability, tone, construction, etc.)? Any and all responses on this topic are greatly appreciated. Thanks. Keep the pep in your step.......the stride in your glide.....the talk in your walk......but whatever you do.....KEEP IT FUNKY! But that isn't what's happening with the Level 42 re-issues. These are re-masters, not re-mixes. They haven't gone back to the multi-track masters to re-mix, but rather have just re-mastered the two-track mix tapes. Regarding the issue of "dumbing-down" 24-bit masters to 16-bit CD's: Even though the end product of the re-mastering process is still just a 16-bit CD, just like the original CD's, there is a difference and it's in the number-crunching. First of all, the originals were sampled at the 16-bit depth. Now, those mixes have been re-sampled at 24-bit, yielding higher-quality files to work from. Next, any digital processing applied (compression, EQ, etc.) loses bits because of the rounding of numbers done in the crunching, which in turn reduces headroom (and therefore perceived sound quality). If you started with a 16-bit file, you end up with less than 16 bits. But if you started with a 24-bit file, you can afford to lose bits and still come out ahead when you go to CD. See? :o) Peace - Z. ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V2000 #163 From: "Maarten Gorter" Date: Thu, 3 Aug 2000 19:50:21 +0200 David wrote: >> I took the CD out and it looks almost burnt. It used to be completely silver but now there's a browny gold, almost centimetre-wide, ring around the outer edge of the top side. << This "bronzing" is caused by aging of the CD. Early CD's, if I'm correct only those made in the UK, sometimes had this problem. I think the cause is the layers of the CD are not completely airtight. I had this problem with the UK release of the Early Tapes once. I returned it to Polydor UK and got a free new copy. I now have the same problem with XTC's Skylarking (UK release), but don't know a Virgin mailing address. I don't think playing in the computer has anything to do with it. The bad thing is it gets worse, until you can't play the CD anymore... Now I have a question. Back in 1992 I obtained the single Something About You/Coup D'Etat on vinyl, but my turntable is now...well...old junk. Is the version of Coup D'Etat on the UK World Machine CD the same? I've been doing a little Napster research: it's not the same, is it? The single has almost no lyrics, until about 15-20 seconds from the end, and I've run across an MP3 of this same song with all sorts of lyrics (something about "no peace at the end of a gun")... I was considering forking over for the UK World Machine on Audiophile Imports, but now I wonder if I should. Maybe it's just because I heard the single's B-side version first, but I far prefer that to the one with all the lyrics in it. Any idea how I can get the B-side version on CD? I'm willing to give my vinyl away to anybody who can help me out.
