From: Tom Trudell Date: Mon, 31 Jul 2000 07:42:36 -0700 I just wanted to chime in as being someone who supports a more active role for the bass in composition and arrangements. Certainly those who appreciate Level 42 would agree. Also, just to let you know, I have found what must be the origin of the name - In Bali, a dead person is intentionally left for a number of days before burial, to give the soul a chance to check out. 42 days, of course. Faithfully Submitted, -Tom ------------------------------ Subject: Re Masters From: "Desmond Lynch" Date: Mon, 31 Jul 2000 17:32:56 BST Hi Guys Bit of news about the long awaited remasters, I have seen the artwork that is going out with the new albums with my own eyes, (and no this is not a wind up) the early tapes and the first album are together with the original artwork of each album set into the centre of the sleeve, set behind the artwork is a grey wallpaper effect with all the different level 42 logo's set into it, and at the bottom is a red strapline with yellow print with the words TWO LEVEL 42 ALBUMS WITH BONUS TRACKS DIGITALLY REMASTERED IN 24-BIT FROM ORIGINAL MASTER TAPES this continues throughout the whole collection with the exception of a physical presence which is released on it's own with the original sleeve but in the top right hand side at a 45 degree angle in red strip with white writing reads DIGITALLY REMASTERED in 24 bit from master tapes Superb stuff, 24 bit should sound so good, there were a number of digesters who were concerned about the remasters coming out in 18 bit format, now our prayers have been answered, definate release in the end of august AT LAST!!!!!! The Netherlands is obviously a special place to Mark ( even though Ria called me scarey!) but I don't feel trying to hold him to ransom ( & therefore affecting all the other guys/gals who played with Level 42) is the right way to go about things. I don't know the full tour details BUT, are there there possibly other places in mainland europe that he is playing ? I know the people from the other side of the pond would love to see him in their part of the world. This after speaking to Winston et all at some of the shows on the 99 tour. I never heard any of them moan about it & some of them came back a couple of times to England. I know it must be hard but if you enjoy a particular person or a band that much, it must be worth the travel. You have to remember that he now has the backing of his own hard & well earned cash. As I said I hope the several exclamation marks were meant as a joke & that I have got the wrong end of the stick( - email is bad for getting the context accross). If that is the case, the next time I'm in Amsterdam for I'll buy ya some AstroTurf or an Oranjeboom. ------------------------------ Subject: Winman42 is no more... I can now be reached at winman42 @ home.com Sorry that most of you could care less about this info, but at least it wasn't 2 paragraphs about the thickness of bass strings. haha Win ------------------------------ Subject: anti RIAA From: Brian Luttrull Date: Mon, 31 Jul 2000 23:21:31 -0500 Get yer free Anti RIAA stickers here! http://linux1285.dn.net/napster/stickers.html ------------------------------ Subject: T.O.P From: "Allwyn and Laura Kelly" Date: Mon, 31 Jul 2000 23:10:24 -0700 Yes thats right............Tower of Power. Unbelievable. This was my second time at seeing the incredibly tight Rocco and David. Their instruments seemed to melt into one. Oh yeah and that horn section, you can't get any better. We talked to Eddie after the show and he said their next album would be out in the spring. Anybody who is'nt familiar with them should get a hold of Rhythm and Business. later laura ------------------------------ Subject: String Stuff From: cfreeman @ wfyi.org (Cedric Freeman) Date: Tue, 01 Aug 2000 01:22:19 -0500 I am sorry but I could not let the string issue go by without jumping in. Guitar Luthier Rick Turner did a great article on "finding the right gauge" of bass string a couple of years ago. And It all boils down to personal choice and the combination of gear and technic to achieve the desired "feel" and "tone" Whenever I am hired to play bass, it is bassed on first my TONE then my Technic (which is not always bassed on slapping or tapping) I have always played with "light gauge" strings (long before I even knew who Mark King was) producing a very strong "bass tone" but that is also due to my pickups pre-amp and cabinet set-up but the most important aspect is knowing how to voice my playing through finger technic not just EQ. If one guy needs a 1000 watts to make "their" sound work so be it. Ifyour band mates are not happy with what you are putting out then that's "your falt" for not fitting "your sound" in the context that you are playing. If you cannot get the sound you want-you just don't have the right combination that fits YOU! ------------------------------ Subject: news From: "Morgan Roussel" Date: Tue, 1 Aug 2000 10:05:55 +0200 Hello, Mike Lindup's announced some Canada dates : (with Da Lata) 9th August, Montreal 10th August, Ottawa 12th August, Toronto Check out www.mikelindup.com for more info. But may be I did not make myself clear - I wanted to know the name of the track by Sgt Rock that samples Mark's intro to Follow Me. Can anyone help me with this ? I have checked the site that was posted on the digest but there are several singles there. Also I cannot find the track name on Radio 1's web site as previously advertised.
