However, ages ago my dad taped a few weeks worth of shows, and I have watched it so many times because the music is superb. Because my dad has a brilliant music taste, he only taped appropriate shows. Heres a list of who's on it: Chaka Khan (and band) Spandau Ballet Cameo (and a brilliant track called "Strange", if any body has heard this, please let me know!) Go West (with Alan Murphy playing guitar, and one of his strings broke during "dont look down"!) Sqeeze (strange band, but sounded good!) And finally, at the end of the tape, we have about 7 seconds worth of Mark King playing a brilliant bass solo, I mean, seven seconds isn't long, but it is long enough to find out that this man was probably the best bass player around at that time. Any way, thought I might keep you posted about my strange taste of music for a sixteen year old, see your around! ------------------------------ Subject: Non L42 related From: Violatiana @ aol.com Date: Wed, 8 Mar 2000 09:04:42 EST This morning in Grand Central Folgers Coffee had setup a small table to celebrate their 150 year Anniversary. It's great to see the digest back, while I don't always contribute, it is exciting to read about the news so many of you seem to have the contacts to get. This leads me to the question I have in mind and please forgive me I realize it is not exactly of a L42 nature, but another band I like to follow also is Tears for Fears. Since so many of you on the digest are in the U.K. has any body heard anything about them at all. It seems that Roland should be up to somthing, but living in the midwest of the states gives me very limited contacts on British Bands, and the web has been no help. Thanks in advance if anyone knows anything. I now return you to your regularly scheduled program. Thank You, Bob ------------------------------ Subject: LAW, Nokia, Magazine Articles, Jamiroquai From: "Jay Krause" Date: Wed, 8 Mar 2000 14:53:39 -0000 I saw that bit on LAW where the guys just staring at the floor - people like him shouldn't have been allowed to go to Level 42 concerts. I'd have gladly taken his place if he didn't want to be there...even though I would have been 7 at the time... Cool about Forevernow on the radio, I only get Lessons in Love or Running in the Family on Cheshire Signal FM... I've got a communicator as well - do people actually use the internet function?! I'm scared to even connect incase it charges me extortionate line rental! I also made a couple of Level tunes - Heaven in my Hands sounds great! I just didn't have the willpower to do more - if you make one wrong move the whole things deleted! As you may tell I sometimes have trouble with technology...... Are there any sites out there, or people who have any magazine articles relating to mark's playing? I mean of the like of the bassist edition where it had a transcription of the Chinese Way and tips/comments about the tune. I'd be very grateful if anyone has any info. Are there any other big Jamiroquai fans in the digest, I liked them way before Level 42, I started liking them when I was bought 'Too Young to Die' in about 1993. I reckon my favourite song is either Mr.Moon or Travelling without moving. Off the new album I think Syncronized sounds brilliant, even though Jamiroquai have had a bit of flak about it being released as a single. What I'm really looking for is some live footage, anything really, like Jools Holland or something, as I don';t have much in this department. I'm willing to swap recordings of their songs (I have pretty much all of their stuff), or stuff I already have in exchange. Mail me if your interested anyone! Bye for now Dale K ------------------------------ Subject: The Lost Trident Sessions From: "J.W.C. Bronski" Date: Wed, 8 Mar 2000 17:18:41 +0100 Hi, I just listened to The Lost Trident Sessions by The Mahavishnu Orchestra and to my surprise there's a Level 42 connection. The riff that is played on the end of the second track is the same that Mark plays at the beginning of his bass-solo on 88 from Physical Presence. I remember reading an interview some years ago with Mark saying that his favourite record was Mahavishnu's Live LP from 1973. There are other parts in Level 42's music that go back to the early fusion-sound. Some of Marks fingerstyle-solos sound like John McLaughlin playing electric guitar. The solo on the full version of Forty-Two sounds very much like Stanley Clark playing with George Duke. There's is also a part on Physical Presence (can't remember the song) where Mark plays a Jaco Pastorius lick. And of course there's The Essential from Influences which is full of Mahavishnu/Return to Forever like music. So everybody who likes that side of Level 42 should check out the early fusion supergroups like Mahavishnu Orchestra, Return to Forever, Weather Report etc. Oh, and I forgot The Return of the Handsome Rugged, Level 42's classic fusion track. Actually, it didn't start out that way. It was originally a few of us getting together to celebrate Shannon's birthday (especially after some, er one of us at least botched the date up) and it's grown quite a bit from there... :) ------------------------------ Subject: My meeting with "The King" (the story retold) From: "Anthony Richards" Date: Wed, 08 Mar 2000 12:22:46 -0500 In speaking recently with someone on the Digest (hi Terri!), I was reminded of my own personal Level 42 experiences. I've decided to re-tell this story of how I was fortunate enough to meet my musical heroes.....Level 42. (Warning this is an extremely detailed and long post. Please scroll down if not interested, and sorry in advance for any inconveniences). Flashback to August, 1987: The Hamptons, Long Island, New York: My friends and I went out to see Level 42 perform at Bay Street in the Hamptons. Since it was our first time out there, we got there super early before the club started letting people in. While we were waiting for the doors to open, my friends and I noticed that Mark, Mike, Phil, Boon, Annie McCaig and Krys Mach were heading back to the club (possibly after having dinner somewhere?). Just before they went in, I was able to catch Mike Lindup for a hot second to tell him how much of a big fan we all were, and that we were looking forward to seeing them perform live. He basically said something along the lines of thanks for the support, and proceeded to go into the club. He was not especially outgoing, but was polite enough (no complaints here mind you). Since we were there so early, we got a spot right in front of the stage. The show was absolutely jamming! Jill Jones (an artist then associated with Prince) opened for Level 42, and she was also very good, and suitably funky. The next day, Level 42 was playing at The Ritz in NYC. We got there HOURS before the band even got there with their equpiment (we were amongst the first people on line). Anyway, the band finally arrives with their equipment and all, and stayed outside the club for a few minutes to talk to us fans who were outside waiting. Mark and Phil were extremely outgoing and friendly, whereas Boon and Mike were more withdrawn, but still very polite. We again (because we were there so darned early) got a spot right in front of the stage, and again the band was smokin' ! At the time, I was a manager for one of the Sam Goody stores on Long Island. One of the PolyGram reps I knew was there, so he managed to get us backstage so that we could meet the band again. Mark and Phil and I chatted at greater length. I'm telling you, Mark and Phil were extremely cool people! I also spoke again briefly to Mike and Boon, and also spoke to Annie and Krys (who were somewhat largely ignored by everyone). It's also interesting to note that drummer Omar Hakim (formerly with Weather Report and Sting) and bassist Carl James (formerly with Steve Winwood and Michal Urbaniak) were also back stage to greet Mark and company. Two weeks later, Level 42 was playing at Toad's Place in Connecticut, so my friends and I again made the trek to see our heroes, once again getting there HOURS early in order to secure a good spot in front of the stage. This time, I got a chance to only speak with Mark (Phil gave me a very cheery wave as he went into the club, and Mike and Boon also said polite hellos). I had a even more time to speak with Mark on this occassion, and told him that we had just seen the band a few weeks prior and had met backstage, to which he replied "Oh yeah, I remember you". Now you might say that maybe he was just being polite, but I honestly got the impression that he was being quite sincere about it. I had brought my 12" copy of "Lessons In Love" with me, which Mark happily signed with a personalized message to me. Being a musician myself, we got to talking about our similar likes in music (specifically jazz fusion music). The best part to all of this is that I somehow managed to follow Mark into the club as we were talking (to which he didn't seem to object), and I got a chance to hear the band warm up during the soundcheck. Man, that is an experience that I will never ever forget! They were playing some instrumental jazz funk grooves that reminded me of the groups Return To Forever and Weather Report. Man, I've said it before and I'll say it again, what an incredibly talented group of musicians!! Unfortunately for me at that point, one of the members of the band's road crew came up to me and asked me to leave, because the band didn't like to have anyone hanging around at the soundchecks. I happily complied, as I was more than happy to have experienced meeting and speaking with one of my musical heroes. Finally, I was employed by PolyGram Group Distribution in Manhattan from 1988-1992, initially as an account service representative, in which one of my duties was to conduct product inventories in various retail locations within our territory, which included Tower Records. Strangely enough, one of the people that I had met on line at The Ritz show was employed at the Tower Records location at 4th and Broadway in NYC, and we managed to maintain a friendly relationship (centered of course around our mutual admiration of Level 42). One day (I believe it was sometime in 1989), this person runs up to me and say "You'll never believe who's in the store shopping......Phil Gould!". For a moment I was like "yeah, right", but I went to check it out, and lo and behold, there's Phil Gould himself! I went up and re-introduced myself to him, and we got to talking about music and drumming and the like. If memory serves correctly, he said that he was vacatoning here in the States while attending some sort of product seminar for Zildjian cymbals (which at the time he was endorsing). When I asked him if he ever saw anyone from Level 42, he said that he really didn't keep in contact with anyone from the band anymore. When I asked him if he had plans to reunite with the band at some point, he told me that he didn't think that he ever planned on playing with them again. You can imagine my pleasant suprise when I saw that Phill prominently appears on Forever Now. Now here's the kicker! I had given Phil one of my business cards, and asked him to try and keep in touch every now and again. He responded by giving me his home address in London! Wow! I was certainly blown away by the gesture. Of course, being the somewhat unobtrusive person that I am, I never took advantage of writing to him, and have long since lost the address (to which I'm still kicking myself for). As my buddy Winston has said to me in the past, he wouldn't have given me his address if he wasn't sincere about it (yeah I know, I know.......this followed by the sounds of self inflicted kicks to the you know what). I hope that everyone here, at one point or another, has the experience of meeting a truly great person....Mr. Mark King. As many Digest members can attest to, it isn't out of the realms of possibilty. Take care everyone! "Funky T", a.k.a.
