From: "Nick Smith" Date: Fri, 28 Jul 2000 04:05:07 PDT ...of course many top players use light strings...! Whats the name of that guy, played a JD for many years, now using a Goodfellow??? etc! Actually, Alex uses light strings (I think!) PS - my bass rig is 1000 watts and has 4 cabs!!!! Nick (currently playing in a covers band where a fat tone is a must AND using 30's AND not one slap amongst it all!) ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Subject: Negrocan From: "Norman van den Wildenberg" Date: Fri, 28 Jul 2000 12:57:16 +0200 Hi all, Negrocan - Cada Vez News: There ebven is a video!! Priced at a pretty reasonable =A310.55 for each pair. (=A353 for the lot, can't be bad) Anybody able to confirm that this is the general release date ??? That's All -T ------------------------------ Subject: Strings, Voting From: "Jay Krause" Date: Fri, 28 Jul 2000 14:46:50 +0100 Without wanting to bore too many people with the age old string debate (I know i know), I have to say I agree with mike. Actually last night I was getting critical comments about my bass sound from my band members. We were playing a james taylor quartet number, and halfway through the song I shifted a part up an octave and started to play on the g string instead of the a. The bass sound seemed to dissapear lol. I'd love to get a warm kindof phat sound for some songs without having to mess about with the eq or switch bass as much but as a lot of the pieces i play i play slap i take it as my cross to bear lol Also when do we find out what 'new' voted songs mark is going to play? bye dale ------------------------------ Subject: Bass Strings and Northern California From: "Brian Flint" Date: Fri, 28 Jul 2000 15:15:15 GMT First, for my Northern California Neighbors. Tonight, Sat July 29th, my band 'Guy Smiley' will be playing in Redding at the (?) Hettfield Diamond Brewery (Or something like that) from 9:30 to 1:30. Stop by and say Hi! if you are in the neighborhood. I'm not going to get into an argument about string gauge, but something that Mike said troubles me. Paraphrased: "Youre only in the band to play bass". On the surface it's an okay statement, and maybe I read too much into things but that statement has such a resignation towards limiting the role of bass these days. I'm so sick of auditioning guitar players that feel the bass is just a 1-4-5 root note instrument. And god forbid the bassist wants to do a solo or feature every 5th song or so. The role of the bassist is changing and the "Flashy stuff" can be accomplished as either a solo or a well place riff in the regular bassline. My Rotosounds (I forget the gauge, at my income you get what's reasonably priced at that particular week) have a booming low end with a nice bright high end. Disclaimer: I know there are a lot of bands no adays that are featuring the bass more and more, my comments were directed towards personal experience on the amateur level. Oh, and a clever line to Guitarists that love to limit the bass players role: "Make a band with 3 guitarists, find out which is the worst guitarist and there is your bass player, peace" Brian ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Subject: NYC mini-fest From: DonZipf @ aol.com Date: Fri, 28 Jul 2000 12:14:09 EDT > As for Don Z and others seeing Allan & Gary performing, I am > confused...Did they perform on David Letterman Show??? If so, > I must see this on TV, will look out for you guys in the audience! ;) Sorry for the confusion, Jenny. We saw the boys at BB King's Blues Club, but the next day Win and I attended the Letterman taping. Two totally separate events. Let me echo Win's comments about how great BB King's was. It's a good, old-fashioned jazz club, like in the 40's. Leather booths all around the perimeter, tables right up to the stage (which is located on the long wall, rather than at the end of the room). You sit, have dinner, and listen to jazz - the way it ought to be! And the food is excellent; I think we all enjoyed our meals (the Maryland crab cakes were slendid).
