Tom Brown ------------------------------ Subject: Light strings...great for bedroom players From: "Mike Brooks" Date: Thu, 27 Jul 2000 12:49:08 +0100 And so the debate continues.................... Haven't we been through this before!????!!! Light strings are great, in my opinion, if you play for fun, at home, in front of friends, etc. But they just aren't practical if you do 2-3 gigs a week, every week, don't have at least 2 cabs in your rig and don't play in a funk 'slapping' band. I'm sorry but even though I do have a string endorsement, light strings just don't work. They go dead too easily and don't produce enough bass end for your average covers band. At the end of the day, you're in the band to play bass. I remember the early years, "must have light strings to do the flash stuff" only to be met with seething looks from other members and the usual comment "where's the bass end? That's what you're employed for!". So yeah, they're great for tricks and flashy stuff. At the end of the day, it's a matter of taste. But how many working musicians use such light gauges? I don't know many. Maybe Alex from The Bass Centre could enter the fray here as I know he reads the digest. So come on...list a few. This is not intended to start a string war by the way! Mike ------------------------------ Subject: Fw: Holdsworth/Husband in California From: "Norman van den Wildenberg" Date: Thu, 27 Jul 2000 17:08:43 +0200 Hi Levelheads, our New York friends told us they spoke to Gary Husband, and he told them he and Allan should play in California. So today I mailed Gary, and it looked like he was online at the moment... 3 minutes later he mailed back: > Yes, this Saturday and Sunday at the Baked Potato (old one) on Coheunga, L.A. > with Allan. > Best, Gary. > So especialy for our Californian Friends...... next weekend.... It's on the UK release of WM, but not on the less-than-wonderful US version. > I just received my tickets for this years great event and on the back it says > > 9. No unauthorised tape recorders, professional film or video equipment > allowed into the venue. Camera's for personal use allowed. Hmm, wouldn't trust those camera-nazis at the JC. Last year, the guy at the door told us cameras were ok, then the frisker-guy promptly confiscated them all. They even went so far as to go into the middle of the crowd to collect cameras which slipped thru the search gauntlet. Hope you'll enjoy our ravings and mad discussions. ;) As for Don Z and others seeing Allan & Gary performing, I am confused...Did they perform on David Letterman Show??? If so, I must see this on TV, will look out for you guys in the audience! ;) Oh the horror of having to watch Letterman every evening just to see if you're on... Unfortunately, still no L42 ones. However, they do have the Thunderbirds theme tune ! I downloaded it and it's quite good. That's all -T
