I have completely hooked on Level 42 since hearing The Sun Goes Down on the radio back in the early eighties and would regularly tune in to Top Of The Pops to them perform. I have spent hours listening to their music over the years. They are extremely privileged to have been fronted by such an amazing genius (Mark King) who is in my opinion the 'best' bass player ever and who during his time with Level 42 provided us with such classics as Something About You, To Be With You Again and not forgetting the infectious Lessons In Love which are some of my all time favourite Level 42 tracks. I have so far only seen them live once in September ' 94 at Bristol, but hope to see Mark in concert later in the year and look forward to hearing from anyone who has had the honour of seeing them perform live during their amazing career. Viv, Don, Winston and I attended. I'll let Winston elaborate in tomorrow's digest, but we ended up speaking to Gary for a bit about the November Jazz Cafe shows as well as Mark from Audiophile Imports about the upcoming reissues. Also, Gary confirmed that he and Alan are playing in California next. More later. While i'm not as in the know as some of the digesters about these titles, Polydor had no intention of releasing a 'single' to promote these reissues. Personally I dont see the point of re-releasing a 10 year old song, unless it was given a good remix, and had a chance of possibly charting because of it. Sure, some artists re-release previous singles with remastered sets, but the majority dont. I guess these re-issues are going to be the new L42 catalog, so in the long haul they should sell quite nicely, especially seeing that they are 2 cd's for the price of one, are 24 bit remasters, and ALL have extra tracks. Dont think Polydor is doing us a favor with the 2 for 1 concept. It just gives the titles a better chance of selling. I do know Mark will be avail for print and radio/tv work, but i'm not at all sure about posters, etc. Also, I know that copies have gone out to all the important magazines, etc. So i would imagine you would see interviews, wrteups, etc a bit closer to the end of August. No need to have an interview in a mag or papers, that tells you to purchase the cd's next month, right? Might be better to have them in the shops. Now, it's just my opinion, but i've seen lots of posts to the digest lately regarding what kind of promo stuff the record label is doing, etc, etc, etc. Folks, these are NOT new albums, and this is not the latest Sting or Mariah Carey album. So dont go thinking Polydor is gonna push them like they are trying to establish a new artist. Some of these albums are 20 years old, so there is just no way they are gonna sell to millions of folks. Heck, some of them never sold to millions of folks to begin with. I just think the majority will sell to folks who already have some albums, and it's also a great deal for the person looking for the World Machine or RITF albums. For them it's a great deal. Well, enough of my babbling take care, Winston ------------------------------ Subject: Holdsworth, Husband & Johnson From: "Winston Walker" Date: Wed, 26 Jul 2000 09:08:49 -0400 Had a great time last nite at B.B. Kings Blues Club & Grill in the heart of Times Square! Met up with Viv Gill, Don Zipf and Lolita for the Allan Holdsworth gig. (Don made the trip up from North Carolina) First let me say that the B.B. Kings venue is GREAT, with not a bad seat in the house. If you live in the NYC area, this place is now the venue to beat. Wonderful decor, great sound, and great stage views. In a word, the band was wonderful. Gary was a manianc on the drums, and it was my first time seeing Jimmy Johnson on bass, live, and he did not disapoint. Seems each band member had his own cheering section. They played for about 90-95 minutes, with hardly a 10 second break between tunes. As this was my first time seeing Holdsworth live, it was a wonderful treat. At one point, between songs, everyone was yelling track selections and Viv yelled out 'Level 42', which got some chuckles from Allan and Gary!! What can I say about Holdsworth's playing? he played some crazy chords, and some wonderful fluid solos. The man is the master, as Gary recently told Bob C at the Boston gig. After the show, all the members did the chat/greet thing, and Allan confirmed the band is headed to California next, so check your locals venues. I dont think these shows are listed on his web site, so do check locally, as you will not be disapointed. Were were all able to go back stage and meet with Gary, who kindly spent a bit of time with us, chatting about the band, his solo work, and touring with MK. He's excited about November, and says hello to all you regulars. tcoy, Winston ------------------------------ Subject: Welcome!! On the back of the ticket it did say "No Cameras permitted (Item 8)" Although you would need a microscope to read it ! However........... I just received my tickets for this years great event and on the back it says 9. No unauthorised tape recorders, professional film or video equipment allowed into the venue. Camera's for personal use allowed. So folks .take your cameras and your solicitors business card and wave the ticket under the doormans nose ! Although the musical expression was not really to my fullest expectations, spending an evening with Don Z, Lilt, & Hanson along with Gary & Allan in a wonderful upscale club, the BB King blues cafe the night was set for enjoyment & fun. Wish I had more time to elaborate on musical style but I think Winston summed that up well. As for me shouting out Level 42 during the show what can I say......? or what should I have said! From: DonZipf @ aol.com Date: Wed, 26 Jul 2000 22:47:02 EDT Just wanted to say "hi" to everybody from New York. I'm here with Winston, listening to you-know-who on his fabulous entertainment system. Earlier we dubbed his Guaranteed Live LaserDisc to my new Canon ZR10 digital camcorder, and let me tell you it works great - this copy looks better than my VHS original. The Holdsworth/Husband/Johnson show was very entertaining. The music wasn't as "out there" as I'd expected. Jimmy Johnson was very personable, and I chatted with him about bass stuff after the show. Also met Allan briefly, and we (Lolita, Winston, and Vivient) spoke with Gary at length. Tonight, Win and I attended the taping of the David Letterman show. Kathie Lee Gifford was the guest (don't laugh - she's quite striking in person!). The band, of course, was awesome - even though we couldn't see them well from our balcony seats. Having so much fun in NY, I may have to come back for DaLata (sssshh, don't tell anyone I'm actually having fun in the City of Doom!).
