From: MDear36910 @ aol.com Date: Tue, 25 Jul 2000 07:14:08 EDT Here we are, one month away from the reissues and still no news of the singles release that is to accompany these releases. I presume that that by the fact there is no news that Polydor are going to bury these releases. I hope to dear god that this is not the case and that I have got it BADLY wrong, but i fear for the worst. If i have can some one answer the following questions. 1. What single is to be released to accompany the reissues? 2. Are the boys doing any promotional appearances / TV etc? 3. Is there any promotional stuff (posters etc) about to accompany the reissues. If anycoen help with the above, please mail me. Michael ------------------------------ Subject: Level 42 tribute in York. From: "Jason Bell" Date: Tue, 25 Jul 2000 12:54:22 BST Dear All With only a couple of weeks to go I just wanted to let you all know about the Level 42 tribute band that's been put together for Fibbers 8th Birthday Bash on Saturday August 12th. We'll be playing in the afternoon, I think the bands kick off about 2pm, and the order is still unannounced. Fellow digest members get to see the set list before everyone else: Love Games Hot Water Something About You Running In The Family The Chinese Way If you are in York that day it would be great to see any digesters there, all the door money goes to charity that day so it is a good cause. For your edification, I enclose a message I originally sent to the digest just after Mark King released _One Man_. ********************* Subject: One Man lyrics dissected From: alex.friesen @ sickkids.on.ca Date: Wed, 6 Jan 1999 09:32:22 -0500 "Goo goo matz, goo goo fan, ketzacoato" was what I thought I heard in the pre-chorus of "One Man" (the title track). That "ketzacoato" sounded familiar, though, so I did a bit of digging. Although the lyrics are reminiscent of Running In The Family ("my friends seem so lost, but I know they don't believe what I'm saying" etc.) the pre-chorus of Mark King's (that is, Roland Gould's) "One Man" actually refers to an Aztec god/king named Quetzalcoatl. Quetzalcoatl is an important figure in the pantheon of Mesoamerican gods. First appearing around 1200 BC in the Olmec culture (or 800 BC if you favour the Maya), he "is the god of human sustenance, penitent, self-sacrifice, re-birth and butterflies," and has a connection to the planet Venus. In the Maya culture he is known as Kukulcan, and in the Quiche Maya he is Gukumatz--the other two names used in the pre-chorus. To the Maya he appears in multiple ways, which could lead to the "one man with many faces" lyrics by Boon. Though there is no indication that he created "the world we live in" as Boon wrote, he did have a hand in the creation of humanity, and was somehow instrumental "in creating the Earth and the Heavens." Although he is a god, there is some evidence of a human side. He may have been a real person whose life story turned into myth over time. One version of the tale of his leaving tells of Quetzalcoatl building "a raft of serpents and birds" and sailing off towards the rising sun. Before leaving he promised that one day he, or one of his sons, would return to claim the kingdom once more. This explains how the Spanish (from the east) conquered the locals so easily--they thought the invading party was the returning god. Just to make matters a tad more confusing, the title Quetzalcoatl was also used to denote rulers and priests. So maybe Boon knew all this and intentionally used it as a basis of Mark's song. Or maybe, as demonstrated in Fait Acompli, Boon just came up with "Gukumatz, Kukulcan, Quetzalcoatl" because he thought he heard that in Mark's demo. I have no claims of expertise in these matters; I just did a bit of digging. I could be totally out to lunch, but if you think the whole thing is too far-fetched, go listen to A Pharaoh's Dream. The above highly distilled from: Guardado, Katherine and Shindle, David. 1998. (great picture of our One Man Quetzalbaby at ) -------------------------- "One Man" lyrics (R. Gould): My friends seem so lost But I know they don't believe what I'm saying They can't see the games that they're all playing And I see the worried hearts and I see the faces so unsure But the feelings that they never felt before But they don't get it Gukumatz, Kukulcan, Quetzalcoatl Gukumatz, Kukulcan, Quetzalcoatl I'm saying One man with many faces One man with many names One man made the world we live in One man can share the blame One man with many faces One man with many names One man made the world we live in One man can share the blame I hear you crying And you've been deceived so many times And you don't know how to deal with all that pain But no one knows it more than me Cause I've been a million dizzy ways And I know it seems important But they don't get it Gukumatz, Kukulcan, Quetzalcoatl Gukumatz, Kukulcan, Quetzalcoatl I'm saying One man with many faces One man with many names One man made the world we live in One man can share the blame One man with many faces One man with many names One man made the world we live in One man can take/share the blame [repeat] ...Alex... ------------------------------ Subject: Need I sell my car? From: "M. Payne" Date: Tue, 25 Jul 2000 09:07:19 CDT Hello YAWL! I just found out (a bit LATE) that MK tix are £15.00, then a £3.30 booking fee per ticket(what the HELL IS THIS?), then on top of that add a one time fee of £1.25 handling fee (who is handling my tix, The Duchess of Wessex?), so a £15.00 (US$22.35) ticket now cost £19.55 (US$29.13), of course multiply that times the number of gigs you are going to! GEEZ! I may need a box on Chalk Farm Road, any suggestions on a good warm vent?
