I hope so Willem - I think the problem is going to be finding a free night. Last year we had the fest on the saturday after the gigs finished, but as this time Mark is playing somewhere else after the Jazz Cafe the only free day really is the saturday before...any takers anyone? Actually Joey, I was into New Order and Depeche Mode before Level 42.... lisa ------------------------------ Subject: Fretless on Guaranteed album From: "Mike Brooks" Date: Sat, 22 Jul 2000 11:51:33 +0100 Regarding the validity of Wal use on Lasso the Moon..... Back in the early days of the digest (weren't they great days!!!), I posted two transcriptions of interviews Mark gave to Making Music and The Guitar Magazine back in September '91 where he talked about each track on the album and what he used on each track. That is why it can be 'guaranteed' that he used the fretless on Seven Years and the Wal on Lasso The Moon. The way the Wal worked was that it had Midi receivers on each fret. The bass was connected to a Midi module which then passed to a keyboard or sound module. There weren't many made and it worked quite successfully. Only Mark knows why he got rid of it. As far as the CD sleeve goes, there is no mention of a fretless yet we all know that he used one on Seven Years because a) he has emntioned it several times and b) the sound is so different from Mark's usual sound. Bear in mind though that he used 30-90 strings which can't be that great on a fretless regarding tone. 40-100's rule!!!! Cheers, Mike ------------------------------ Subject: Brass Construction From: "Winston Walker" Date: Sat, 22 Jul 2000 11:00:21 -0400 If anyone's interested, Funk band 'Brass Construction' is playing a FREE gig at summerstage in NYC's Central Park on AUGUST 6, a sunday. From www.summerstage.com August 6 Sunday 3:00PM Faudel / Brass Construction The little prince of Rai, that Algerian vintage of global groove, is building a legend here and now. His performances are celebrations of the sweaty ferment of Parisian discoteques. Soul men Brass Construction had top 10 hits in the 70's and are still "movin' on", riding the brassy groove and as funky as they wanna be. As a new subscriber, I'd better introduce myself! I'm a 32 year old married bus driver from Leicestershire. I was first introduced to Level 42 by a school friend in the eighties - "The Sun Goes Down" struck me as the most original thing I'd ever heard - and I was instantly hooked. Since then I've seen them 11 times in concert (Mainly in the eighties). My music collection ranges from "The Early Tapes" on cassette, "The Chinese Way" on 12" vinyl to just about everything else on MP3! I used to have a copy of Mark King's "Masterclass" video somewhere - but I'm not sure where that's gone! Interesting fact: I onced worked as a keyboard demonstrator for Hohner (I'm not quite up tp Mike Lindup's standard, I'm afraid). Whilst there, I had to ship a Hohner headless bass to MK for appraisal! Well, that's me! ------------------------------ Subject: MI2 & MK Gigs From: "Mark M Walsham" Date: Sun, 23 Jul 2000 09:24:02 GMT Went and saw MI-2 yesterday, and have to say that I enjoyed it very much indeed. Some of the action scenes were breathtaking, and very much John Woo standards. If you take the film for what it is, it is excellent, do not go in with preconcieved ideas, and you'll enjoy it. For those who have not yet seen it, and want to for the link with L42, it's not a big deal, just a co-incidence! Got tickets for MK on the 12th and 16th, can't wait to see some results of the voting on www.mark-king.com, it will be interesting to see what the most popular selections are, I guess that the following three will feature :- 1. Out of Sight, Out of Mind 2. You can't Blame Louis 3. Standing In The Light These tracks seem to have a universal following and acceptance that they are excellent, it would be very cool to hear Mark play them live. Answers on a postcard please.... Kind regards, Mark. ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com
