Anyone seen Level 42 "Live at Wembley", because if you have then im sure you are 'bound to laugh at this! When the beginning of "Something about you" starts, the camera goes across a line of the crowd. Look for the guy standing there staring straight at the floor, he just isn't doing anything. I must admit, I have wound this back so many times because the expression on this guys face is one of the funniest things I have seen in ages!. Please reply if anyone has a clue what im talking about. (He's wearing a white shirt, and he is easy to see because everyone is moving around and cheering, but this guy is just standing there, thanks for supporting our favourite funk band mate!) ------------------------------ Subject: URGENT MARKTHEMIX From: L.F.Green @ shu.ac.uk (Laurence F. But enough of this Level 42 talk. My insta-review of Steely Dan's _Two Against Nature_, which I purchased for the incredibly low low low Canadian price of $16.99 (that's about one pound fifty), is as follows: Pretty damn good. Quite Kamakiriadesque in the production and slightly less so in the writing, but Becker and Fagan have had quite a healthy dose of satire pills to compliment their irony tablets. So there's hope for our lads yet. If the Dan could do it after, what, twenty years?, then so can Level 42. ...Alex... Have you any idea how long I've been trying to pursue my own career as a solo drummer/bandleader, trying to make a CD and get somebody interested? Literally years!! I'm not exactly a new name either - I've done a lot of noteworthy stuff, but it recently started to drive me quite insane. At least, now I can come out for Allan, and a few select other things, to play drums, but, this new direction I can actually be productive, and active! The result has been two solo albums as a keyboardist / writer etc. As a drummer, I've felt washed up and kind of marginal in peoples eyes for quite a time now - unable to even make a living out of it. Completely ridiculous. ' ======== Better news now: Allan holdsworth and Gary Husband's new album is being recorded now with Jimmy Johnson (bass. The release date is scheduled for September 2000 ======= Allan Holdsworth tour dates: April 08: SanDiego CA, 4th and B April 14: Orange County CA, The Galaxy in Foutain Valley April 22: San Francisco CA, Maritime Hall Shows are being planned for Seattle and Portland. Dates will be in early June. Allan will also be touring Japan and Europe in May. These dates will be posted in mid March. Allan may tour the rest of the U.S. this June / July however nothing is finalized yet. Check back peridically for updates. ======= Here is a review written by Randy Allar from WCSB. They do a live webcast and he plays Allan weekly. There will be a webcast interview sometime next month! ALLAN HOLDSWORTH THE SIXTEEN MEN OF TAIN Gnarly Geezer For guitar aficionados, Allan Holdsworth is a common. Name. If you've never heard of Holdsworth, then you are out of the loop. Holdsworth has been around for quite some time, performing and recording with the likes of U.K., Bill Bruford, Jack Bruce, Soft Machine, Jean-Luc Ponty, Gong and Gongzilla, and many other world class musicians. THE SIXTEEN MEN OF TAIN symbolizes Holdsworth's first release in close to four years, and what a way to strike back. Combine Holdsworth's unique guitar style with the likes of Gary Novak on drums and Dave Carpenter's acoustic bass, and the result is a smooth yet uncharted territory for Holdsworth fans. "0274" begins slowly with the synthaxe creating soundscapes with which Holdsworth will soon solo over. The pace quickens as electric guitar steps into the spotlight. A striking melody builds over the synthaxe. Holdsworth 's eclectic legato soloing is once again brilliant. Special guest Walt Fowler also makes an appearance on trumpet. Nice touch. The title track, "The Sixteen Men Of Tain" gives bassist Dave Carpenter a little room to expand. Carpenter is a permanent member of the trio of Scott Henderson and Kirk Covington. With a more traditional feel, Holdsworth changes the tone with his characteristic guitar approach. In the way of ballads, "Above And Below" as a twin, which is an additional track that is a reprise. The similar cuts are very different. The reprise utilizes the synthaxe as the lead instrument. "Downside Up" is a more laid back ballad that builds on the strength of Novak's drumming over a moody guitar leads. This track also reunites Holdsworth with drummer Chad Wackerman. "The Drums Were Yellow" best demonstrated the ability of Novak, and takes the listener on a wild ride bizarre melody and guitar. "Texas" is perhaps the most ambitious composition on the disc. It begins hectic and follows consistently throughout. Enter the other guest appearance of Walt Fowler on trumpet. Fowler adds a different element to Holdsworth music. An element which would be nice to hear on future projects. You might remember Fowler's name. He worked extensively with Frank Zappa. "Eidolon" focuses the synthaxe to power this one. It is one of the quicker paced tunes and demonstrates the unique tones capable from this instrument. For those who do not know what the ynthaxe is, it is guitar shaped synthesizer. It has a controller that the operator blows into. A separate unit translates the vibrations into sound, and one part is of no use without the other. Synthaxe is no longer in production, so these truly endangered musical instruments. It has been a number of years since the last Allan Holdsworth release, and this one is worth the wait. Although more traditional than earlier releases, THE SIXTEEN MEN OF TAIN attacks in a different way. Holdsworth writing has matured in the absence, and the performances are well above average. You will not find this one is stores, instead, try www.gnarlygeezer .com, and find out what the buzz is among Holdsworth fans. BOTTOM LINE: A release that fills the gap between earlier Holdsworth and the traditional release, NONE TOO SOON. This one quietly scorches. "THE SIXTEEN MEN OF TAIN" was released on: * December 1 1999 in Japan * February 1 2000 in USA and Europe ========== Also I completed (well, the work is never done) a bit more of my Allan Holdsworth thing on the site.. please check it.... http://come.to/level42 (or try: http://www.level42.zzn.com) Cheers Norman ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V2000 #13 From: TenthSun @ aol.com Date: Tue, 7 Mar 2000 20:34:04 EST In a message dated 3/6/00 6:00:02 AM Eastern Standard Time, Level42-request @ worldmachine.com writes: << Subject: Help : Your Assistance is Required From: "Richard Maybury" Date: Sun, 5 Mar 2000 19:16:02 -0000 Howdy Folks, Still not heard from anyone about the L42 fanzine "The Pursuit of 42". One of your tags has to equal L42. Your web authoring software should have an option in the menu to do it for you. Otherwise, I can't remember how to do it by hand.
