Apparently, he didn't enjoy playing the fretless much, so used the Wal instead, the same one that was up for sale a few years ago with the other basses. I tried it but didn't like it. Mike ------------------------------ Subject: weight problem... what weight problem From: "murgatroyd" Date: Wed, 19 Jul 2000 13:24:12 +0100 Thanks Andrew Goodwin for his hilarious comment regarding my having the front 4 seats at Liverpool! brightened up my day mate! Seriously though - I'm sure seats will count for naught once Marky hits the first note and we'll all be crowding the stage just like the good(?) old days! Chris M ------------------------------ Subject: Lasso the Moon From: DonZipf @ aol.com Date: Wed, 19 Jul 2000 10:02:42 EDT > Someone asked if Mark ever played fretless on any songs. I believe that > Lasso the Moon from Guaranteed is played on a fretless. Don Z, is that > correct? A common misconception! The bassline on "Lasso the Moon" sounds fretless, but it's really a Wal bass with an MB4 bass-synth system installed. The actual sound doesn't even come from the bass, but from a Yamaha synthesizer module connected by MIDI. To my knowledge, "Seven Years" is the only MK fretless recording out there (although I am suspicious about parts of "Billy's Gone"). Anyone know who owns the Wal/MB4 bass today? - Don Z. ------------------------------ Subject: featuring lovely music in movies! From: "JENNY LINDSKOG" Date: Wed, 19 Jul 2000 16:14:40 +0200 Hi again all! :) Coming back from a lovely week in Skagen, Denmark with sun and waves, I have lots of mails to go through and lots of digests unread. Speaking about MI:2 and the L42 reference, are there any L42 songs that have popped up in any movies? Last night, much too much regret, I saw the horrible Something about Mary and to my great surprise the lovely Danny Wilson tune - Mary's Prayer was played in the beginning! :D Apart from that, the movie wasn't that good...the bit about the hairgel made me laugh, but my sense of humour isn't the best so... ;) Jennix ------------------------------ Subject: Camden and bits... From: "M. Payne" Date: Wed, 19 Jul 2000 09:28:40 CDT Howdy! Firstly, CONGRATS IAN BUCK, I am still jumping up and down!!!!! :) Well, let me say that I enjoy staying in Camden, very easy to get around and close to the gigs where I do not have to worry about catching the trains, so I can stay after the gigs and visit and eat with other levelheads! When I am in London normally when a gig isn't in Camden, I stay @ Kensington/Earls Court area, which is okay, but I prefer staying in North London. Ealing is OKAY, but still a long train ride into the city centre. Camden just has a vibe to it, and really enjoy all the shops, markets, and cafe's on the high street in Camden and Chalk Farm. I think that people posted to this one, but Mark used a fretless for Seven Years (GUARANTEED) for sure, Lasso The Moon and My Father's Shoes I am unsure! I do remember Mark giving an GWR Interview in 1991, saying that this was the first time that he had played a fretless in the studio and that he quite like the freedom that a fretless gave him, I didn't understand what that meant, but for fact sake there you go! I am a big PET SHOP BOYS fan, so whoever it was that asked I am one! I know I just admitted to this on the L42 digest, what was I thinking? Brian, I am still trying to find (locally) that CH Rare Disc, still having no luck. Dammit Jim! Does anybody know if Da Lata is recording any of these gigs, has anybody asked Mike? Is Mike's solo stuff EVER going to see the light of day? Well, it seems that the hard core fans, like myself, will be making what seems to be the annual pilgrimage to Camden for the MK gigs, should we do shirts for this one, since we've got the time? How many people are (from the USA/Canada except Quebec "JK") are going over? BTW, that Hamburg gig is AWESOME, I have a copy thanks to another digester and thge sound is just INCREDIBLE, espc Bitter Moon and World Machine, I also like the Mr Pink riff in RITF. Well that's all for now, I wish I didn't have a firewall so I could chat LIVE instead of teh ILF/Digest, but oh-well, just thankful that I have the Internet/Email at work! :) Best and Kind Regards, Mikey ------------------------------------------------------------ TEXAS ROUND-UP 6 LEVEL42 FEST Dallas/Ft. The band has not toured since the 1997 death of lead singer Michael Hutchence. According to on line source Immedia.com, former Noiseworks singer Jon Stevens, who fronted the band at two recent club gigs, will again join the band for the tour. To prepare for the New Zealand tour, INXS will perform on August 16 and 17 in Jindabyne, New South Wales, although no formal plans to tour Australia have yet been announced. Mike's solo album will see light of day, but right now he's really concentrating on Da Lata and his songs album. The whole Da Lata thing has turned out really well, the PPF comes no where close to be honest. Da Lata are awesome, on Sunday, they had the crowd up on their feet, dancing and interacting with the band from beginning to end. They are great musicians, real experienced musos, seem to work really well as a team and Mike fits in perfectly. The line up included a chellist(?), a saxophonist and a really cool percussionist. Mike's singing was impeccable and went so well with Lianna's voice. I had to pinch myself it was so good. The best thing is that they have a good following and seem to be in the hands of a very good record company - so the whole set up seems to be very professional and to be honest, equal in caliber to many L42 performances. It was like watching him on the Rockpalast or Live at Wembley shows. He was beeming, often standing up so he could bop while singing and playing. He even waved over to the bass player when the bassist was about to start his solo (that brought back a lot of memories)! I'm sure I saw Mike grinning at that stage, he must have had a little flash back. He also got the group to line up and bow to the cheering crowd at the end, just like L42 used to (eg LAW)! The crowd were having a ball, people in the balconies were standing on chairs 5 rows deep just to see the action. And the Prophet 5 (with its sea shore effect) was a real treat. Mike was going to post us all a mail some time ago at mikelindup.com explaining in his own words why he had left the PPF; but as you know, he is hardly ever at home to get the chance to pick up or write mail, but hopefully he'll get the chance soon. If you want to know more about Da Lata, their (official) bio is on the shows page at http://www.mikelindup.com.
