I know this will keep costs down for him and the band, but it would be great if he would come back up to Manchester, the drive to Birmingham last time was horrendous! Bye! dale ------------------------------ Subject: Fretless bass From: "Jackson, Lolita" Date: Tue, 18 Jul 2000 08:41:40 -0400 Someone asked if Mark ever played fretless on any songs. I believe that Lasso the Moon from Guaranteed is played on a fretless. Don Z, is that correct? We do have a tube network which although usually crap to say the least, does run. Would it not make sense to stay in other parts of London rather than stay on the doorstep of the gig? You can get B&B's here in Ealing (west London) for around £25 - £30 a night. It's only 25-30 minutes on the tube. Can't believe the news about Paul Young. He was on TV only 2 weeks ago plugging the SAS Band and the fact they did the finale at Party In The Park. I've seen him quite a few times live with the SAS Band and he was always great. What a shame! I know Jamie Moses (guitarist with Brian May & The SAS Band) and I'm sure he'll be devastated. Victor replaced Jaco Pastorious in the monumental jazz fusion band Weather Report. He's released at least one solo cd, and has performed and/or recorded with a variety of incredible jazz fusion artists (including Omar Hakim, Steps Ahead and Weather Update). I've seen Victor live twice in the eighties (once with Weather Report in 1983 and once in 1985 or 1986 with Michal Urbaniak's Constellation). I was blown away both times by Victor's command of his instrument. If memory serves, both times he played he was using a red Fender Jazz Bass (don't know what year it was though). I would love some more info on the bass that Willem had seen Victor use at the North Sea Jazz fest. Anybody out there got some specs/info on that bass? Keep it funky y'all, "Funky T", a.k.a. Did Mark ever used a fretless bass guitar, live or in the studio > and if so, on which tracks. Yes! For the track "Seven Years" on the Guaranteed album, Mark wanted to try a fretless bass. Trouble was, he didn't own one. So he yanked the frets out of a Moon jazz bass which had been given to him by the maker when Level 42 arrived in Japan in '85. The bass since has been nicely re-fretted, and is now in my collection. You can see/hear/read all about it at... http://members.aol.com/donworld/moon1.html Don't miss the video clip! I need some help (No....i dont mean i am ready for the looney bin....... not just yet!!!!) I work as a music teacher in a Music and Arts centre ..(CEDAR PARK MUSIC AND ARTS CENTRE, MICKLEOVER, DERBY) It was built using Lottery Money through the Arts council and was sponsered by none other than Brian Eno (Roxy Music)...They guy I work with is an Eno (Brian's cousin). I have complete access to this block and it has a large performance area with recording studio... I would like to hold some sort of festival there sometime next year (2001)...and i want some help...!!!! If you live in the Midlands area and want to help out, or if you've organised one before then email me....it could be a great event and perhaps we can get one of the gang (Perhaps Mark or Mike) to come too!!!.....who knows.... maybe you are a tribute band and live nearby....get in touch..... we could organise a gig too!!! any help will be greatfully appreciated!!! also...i must tell you all this....Last week I was teaching a year 8 class (THats 2nd year seniors to us old 'uns!)....and they did presentations for the class...and most of them were poor....so i decided i would do one on Mark and the guys.... Well these kids were so hooked...they thought that Mark was the coolest thig they have ever heard and some are even gonna buy some of the re-releases...... maybe if Level 42's music was remarketed and pushed they could start a whole new thing!!! theyre certainly popular with thirty 12 year olds that I know!!!!...after all who would have thought that Abba's music would make a comeback!!!!! thats all for now.... thanks for listening....
