I finally got my tape from North Sea Jazz Festival /The Hague from July 14th 1985 out of one of those boxes that i keep on the attic. There is a great bass-solo on it by Victor Baily. At that moment he played with Steps Ahead including Michael Brecker Mike Manieri(hope i spelled it right), Chuck Loeb, and Peter Erskine(mentioned yesterday; Steely Dan). The track is called "Safari" and I cut out the basspart and made a mp3 of it. This was the first time that I visited NSJ and saw Steps Ahead live; I cant remember which brand bass guitar was used but i do know that is was a fretted bass, and just by one simple click the complete fretboard was removed and was a fretless bass beneath it. I have never seen it before after this event. Okay..the file is 3.85MB....two options 1 send me a mail so i can mail the file to you 2 i put it out on NApster <<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>> Q. Did Mark ever used a fretless bass guitar, live or in the studio and if so, on which tracks. Cheers Willem ------------------------------ Subject: Confirmed MK dates... From: "M. The rooms were GREAT by London standards and the staff was somewhat friendly. I plan to stay there again, I would advise to stay there too, My room (single) with Breafast, was £54.00/night. From: "M. Payne" Date: Mon, 17 Jul 2000 12:09:13 CDT Mechanics singer Young dead BBC NEWS- London 17.7.00 1800 Rock singer Paul Young, who starred with Mike and the Mechanics and Sad Café, has died from a suspected heart attack. The 53-year-old vocalist, who enjoyed a string of chart successes in the 1970s and 80s, collapsed at his home in Altrincham, Cheshire, a spokesman for his record company, Virgin, said. The father-of-three was dead on arrival at Wythenshawe Hospital on Saturday evening. Young made his name with Sad Café after beginning his career on the German club circuit. The band released their first album in 1977, but it was their second long player, Misplaced Ideals, which brought worldwide success. The single Run Home Girl was a big hit in the US, while Everyday Hurts reached number three in the UK charts. Hit singles Other hit singles followed, including Strange Little Girl and My Oh My, but the band never recaptured their past glories. In 1985, Young teamed up with Mike Rutherford and Paul Carrack to form Mike and the Mechanics. The band reached number two in the UK with the single The Living Years in 1989 and also enjoyed top 20 hits with Word Of Mouth in 1991 and 1995's Over My Shoulder. Young was looking forward to going on tour with them later this month and had recently returned from gigging in Switzerland with fellow rock stars Dave Gilmour from Pink Floyd and his namesake, 80s singer Paul Young. Rutherford said he was stunned by his bandmate's death. "We are all shocked and devastated by Paul's death. He had a fantastic voice, one of the best rock voices of his generation, and aside from his musical talent, he had such an infectious enthusiasm for the business. "Paul loved performing, we all thought he would be singing in 50 years time. This is a terrible loss." ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Subject: New Level 42 CD From: "Richard Maybury" Date: Mon, 17 Jul 2000 20:09:25 +0100 Howdy Folks, Check out more details on the new 42 compilation album "Best Level" at www.maybury.nildram.co.uk. Where's me star? Oh for goodness sake, You expect us to read books, how obscure is that? The answer is clearly that the Kon-rads, were an obscure 60's band who featured an, as then unknown, David Bowie, who starred in The Man Who Fell to Earth, directed by Nic Roeg, who was originally slated to direct Flash Gordon (later removed due to "creative differences") which was soundtracked by Queen, as was Highlander, which starred Sean Connery, who played father to Indiana Jones, Starring Harrison Ford who had a small part in Apocalypse Now. I'm surprised nobody spotted it before. In message <20000717100001.8358.qmail @ mail.worldmachine.com>, Level42 Digest writes >Ahhh Fred welcome back to "Bass Corner" ! There are 126 harmonics on each >string, >this works across four strings. There was an article in Bass Player magazine >years ago but I can't remember which copy it was. I bow to anyone with a superior knowledge on this subject, but I just can't see why 126 should be the limit. Since each harmonic is a subdivision of the whole string length, surely one could theoretically keep dividing the nodes add infinitum. If you play the 126th harmonic, why can't I just put my finger halfway between that node and the end of the string to create the 127th? I would guess that 126 is the average practical limit for most uses, but that, according to the quality of the bass, strings and the player, the total figure could go down as well as up. (And your home may be at risk if you do not keep up etc. etc....) I've only heard one song, I think it was called "The Impression that I get" which was a minor hit. They're known as a Ska band, and the singer has a rather gravelly voice. You might like them, but I don't see much similarity w/Level 42. in other news, I say Steely Dan last night (jolly good show), and who else did I see? Mr. Eric (Level 42 digest) Hanson. He said he saw my Level 42 T-shirt from a mile away! nice to see ya.... Bruce (I actually got my last message quoted by AG - wow!)
