Apparently, when she spotted him Mark put his finger to his lips as if to say don't let on!!!! I know the boys used to live in S/West London and was wondering if anyone can confirm whether any of them used to venture into the darkest depths on my manor that is S/East London? Keep on funkin' (& up the 'Ammers) HUGHSIE ------------------------------ Subject: tapping, slapping or whatever From: "James Watkins" Date: Thu, 13 Jul 2000 15:14:28 +0100 Hi everyone, To those talking about harmonics etc, I can promise you that the newer your strings, the more harmonmics you'll get (try the harmonic just before the 4th fret with old strings (no sound) and with sparkling new strings (great sound)). Whoops my brackets are getting out of hand. As for tapping, check out Billy Sheehan. OK, so the music's alittle bit on the heavy side, but check out his tapping (2 strings at a time more often than not) where he has the frets for his higher strings scalloped to improve the velocity. Enough of boring you all, catch you later Jimbo ------------------------------ Subject: inane stuff From: "James Watkins" Date: Thu, 13 Jul 2000 15:18:52 +0100 Well it's been well over a week and nobody mentioned that Level 42 were mentioned on the National Lottery draw. Maybe everybody's got sensible. Jimbo PS I haven'e seen MI2 yet, but as soon as I do I'll make the appropriate posting!! ------------------------------ Subject: ML NYC/MK CJC/Bass... From: "M. Payne" Date: Thu, 13 Jul 2000 09:45:33 CDT * I might be able to be in NYC on August 4-6, for the ML gig, WIP * I hope that these are the Mark's dates, I won't miss the 'turkey-n-stuff' this year, bangers-n-mash just didn't slice it...I wonder if this tour is a promo for a 'new' Trash album, hmmmmm? I can't get through on the phone to the box office at CJC, is everybody phoning them bout' Mark'd dates? Something completely different, I know absolutely NOTHING about playing the bass, but I can say that I have never seen such a versatile bass player as Mark King! I was stuck in traffic yesterday after work for an hour, listened to TRASH all the way through, and when Sooner Than Later played, the bass lines is amazing, espc during the chourus, and towards the end he really lets loose. Also, the track Over There (off of Fait Accompli, live) and Hot Water (when he and Mike are kickin'/kung-fu fighting) I thought really showed his strength. Although, I think his BEST BASS SOLO is from the Live At Wembley video prior to Love Games, to have been there in person would have been awesome. The NOTP video clip of that tapping on his bass I thought was interesting and had quite a 'neat' sound, I agree that it sounded like a keyboard! Question for the masses: During the CJC gigs last Nov, when Mark was asked if he was going to do a bass solo that night, he said only if he felt "inspired to do so", so that being true, does Mark know the notes and solo that he is going to play, or is it just off the cuff and spontanious (sp?), I do know that Children Say came from a bass riff that he would play during warm-ups before a gig, I wonder how many other songs were 'born' in this way? Payne" Date: Thu, 13 Jul 2000 12:43:00 CDT PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not book any AIR tickets until the final dates have been announced, for those of you that have sent me air quotes, I would be happy to quote when the official dates are released. I just would hate to see someone book these dates and then they change and you are 'bound' to a set of dates that don't work! After speaking to Paul Hammond host of http://www.mark-king.com briefly earlier today, he doesn't know anything about the validity of these dates, as they haven't come from Mark, again Paul stated that the contracts haven't been signed yet, still waiting for the 'ink' to dry.......so basically things CAN change from the rumours that we have read/heard. Ariving there Da Lata was just staring the soundcheck, so I took my place in front of the Stage. Soundcheck was realy great, as Mike saw me comming and said hello, during the soundcheck. After the soundcheck that lasted for about half an hour, Mike went to the front of the stage, walking around his Prophet 5(!!!!). He looked my direction, and I asked Mike if he would sign my CD's, he agreed, no problem. Mike came down, we talked for a while, also Maarten Gorter who allready was there chatted with him, whilst Andre Huydts, Henri Blakenburg and their women all were there. Mike Signed my Changes CD (To Norman, All the best, Mike Lindup), and I gave him a 2nd one. Oh, who's is this, he asked me. Well, this is mine too, I said, but it is the Japanese copy. Japanese?? Mike was stumbled, so I showed him the inserts, with Japanese Lyrics. Oh Wow, never knew there was a Japanese one of it, he said, and called a friend of his, with a VCR-recorder, to record the Japanese CD, one part in my hands, one part in Mike's....'Well' He said in the camera 'this is the guy who even has the Japanese one!!' For a moment I felt like the hero of the day, but then the concert started, and I realised I wasn't.... :-( The gig itself was great, but I can imagine there are fans that won't like the Brazilian influence of it. The sound is realy Brazo-Jazz, but I liked it, althought the Bass could be more funky, and Mike should do some more with the Keyboards. btw. The Prophet 5 Mike used is realy getting older....that's for sure, man can hear that... ;-) After the gig we said Mike goodbye and went for a beer. Oh yeah, also asked Mike if he's going to the Jazz cafe gigs in November, but he didn't even know of it, so I told him. He told us he sure will think of going there again, 'cos he liked last November show realy!!! Conclusion: It realy was worth it!!!! Norman (Helga: he daar heb je.. dinges... Henri: ...Malle Pietje..... Helga: ... Oh, ja..) www.level42.zzn.com ps Cheers to the mates i've met again at the gig: Henro, Helga, Wilma, Andre, Arjan, Maarten, Patricia, Fred, and the 2 others (sorry.
