Harmonics ====== There are 126 harmonics on one bass string, so there's scope for all of us (I think I've found about twelve!). My fave piece with harmonics in is still "Portrait Of Tracy" by Jaco Pastorius, but Michael Manring is a bit of a monster on the subject as well. :o) Thinking about it, Steve Bailey can do some pretty hot six string bass harmonic things as well - bit of a chord monster is Steve. I'll leave false harmonics for another day....... :o) Mark does some lovely harmonic things in Love Games, my fave technique is firing off a harmonic and bending the string behind the nut, raise it a tone. Try it with chords. Love Games and the intro to "She Can't Help Herself" use it nicely. Tapping ==== Like it or loathe it, it's here, there and dare I say everywhere. The history of where and why is a bit shadey, the guitar tapping goes back in to the fifties but Emmett Chapman still shines out as a monster tapper (he taught Stanley Jordan for a while) and then invented the Chapman Stick to he could tap with two hands independently. As bass tapping goes then I would still go for Michael Manring. Victor Wooten shines out on this stuff, Bela Fleck albums are just awesome. Anyway, enough of my yakking..... So perhaps the MI2 thread was missed? :-) Norman, Francois K is a dj, out of NYC. I think Dirkies posted about this cd a few months back. I think it's a compilation of his fave tracks. Not sure if all the tracks are mixed together or not. I recall Francois working at a lot of the popular clubs in manhattan, as well as remixing tons of singles for the PRELUDE record label, and local radio stations. later, Win ------------------------------ Subject: Dance track on BBC Radio 1 with Mark vocals From: "john miller" Date: Wed, 12 Jul 2000 07:07:43 PDT Hello all, Some background on Sgt Rock track: He's a friend of mine, and yes his real name is Jim Burke. He was into Level 42 back in the early days so I'm not surprised he's sampled Mark's voice on one of his tracks. You may remember a song called 'Eat my goal' during Euro 96 by a band called 'Collapsed Lung'. That was him too! I went to a party of his recently that he was DJing and only went and slipped in the 12" version of Hot Water! The crowd went mad! (we were all old enough to remember it). I'll tell him that he's getting rave reviews on the Digest... regards John ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Subject: rip-off artiste on Digest From: "alien horse" Date: Wed, 12 Jul 2000 10:39:39 EDT Hello Richard, I saw your post at the Digest today. Will you PLEASE respond to this e-mail and tell me WHY you have not sent to me the items I bought from you in late FEBRUARY yet?!? This is the eighth e-mail I have sent to you asking this question. Please do NOT continue to ignore me. Also, I know of four others that you owe some sort of 'Fan Club' items to... Probably my favorite '80's song in general featured in the movie The >Breakfast Club. But I can see Blancmange doing something similar-sounding. Nah, Blancmange had too much "boing" and not enough "ring" to sound like Simple Minds. The Breakfast Club was modeled after my high school (though shot mostly at a different one). All (except one) of the John Hughes movies were shot in the area where I live. The "U boat commander" from Risky Business was from the same town I currently live in. When enrollment dropped after the "baby boomer" wave passed and they closed one of the school's two campuses (New Trier West), John Hughes rented it out to use as sets. I remember that "Home Alone" was shot there using the swimming pool as the flooded basement and the airplane. "Uncle Buck" prominently features the front of the West campus (now being reopened for student use). Great movies all, though my favorite was the one that was not shot in the area ("Some Kind of Wonderful") which featured music from Propaganda's "P Machine" album-- a truly great album. It is a shame that when I was in high school the music director of my high school radio station didn't like Level 42 or they might have gotten more airplay and made it to one of Mr. Hughes' movies. My first encounter with Level 42 was having "Something About You" on cart at the station before it made to to mainstream radio in the U.S., plus the guy who did the jazz show managed to get an import copy of "Hot Water" which he'd play on occasion. --David-- -- ______________________________________________________________________ David J.
