I auctioned it off on Aucland for the princley sum of £3, so I made a profit, and someone who really wanted it got it! The best bargain I have picked up thus far, is a copy of DAZZ 4, the promo with Sandstorm and Journey To... for a fiver from a record shop. They didn't know what it was, nor did I, but for a fiver it was mine. I later wrote to (the late) Andy Sojka through the then fan club to find out what it was, and he confirmed what it was, and that in some record shops it had changed hands for as much as £120! Other things that I collect, like the early Nintendo LCD games, I have picked up for 50p to £2, and these are now big business, going for £40 plus! Everyone on the digest, get out there to those car boot sales, if you can stand trawling through the rubbish, you will find a gem or two! Then, if you already have a copy, whack it onto an auction site, sell it and make a profit, and someone happy that they now own an item that they wanted. Not wishing to advertise, but there is an excellent online record store called www.netsounds.com, check this out, it has an excellent L42 list. I asked him how much they were and he said he was going to sell them for =A320 each but he wanted to sell the lot together so he was charging the equivalent of =A315 each. I thought whilst it would be nice to have them the price was a bit steep as there was no packaging and I thought I could hold out until the official release. Instead I bought Best Level from HMV for =A37 which I think has a good selection of tracks if you want to turn someone on to the band. Ian B ------------------------------ Subject: Dance track on BBC Radio 1 with Mark vocals From: John.O'Connell @ Equant.com Date: Tue, 11 Jul 2000 17:25:04 +0100 I've managed at last to find the info on the dance track played on Steve Lamacq's evening session a couple of weeks ago. Its a typical dance mix with some L42 samples and Marks voice is sampled from the intro to Follow Me on Physical Presence saying "Its the most fantastic song you ever heard" throughout. The artist is called Sgt Rock aka Jim Burke of the Junior Blanks. The track is on a cd with 3 songs, there is a vinyl available also with a few more songs. The CD is available from July 24th from the record label Wiiija (www.wiiija.com), here's a link to the cart page: http://mailorder.almaroad.com/cart/wiiija_frames.html Steve Lamacq has a page for voting for the track on his web page: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/alt/buzz_chart.shtml I've searched the web for Sgt Rock and there are varying reviews from crap to superb for this guy. By the way, Sgt Rock appears to be a comic strip hero from the 50's and many of you may also be wondering where you've heard Sgt Rock in a song - its From the band XTC , the song is Sgt Rock (is going to help me). Nuff said, back to my corner John ------------------------------ Subject: The Usual From: "Brian Flint" Date: Tue, 11 Jul 2000 11:01:59 PDT I'm glad to see someone address the repititive, I'm surprised it was only addressed by one. Oh by the way, at the All Star break The Montreal Expos have a record of 42-42. Whoaaaaaaaaaaaa can you believe it? BELIEVE IT!!!!!! I hope Mark tours next year, I plan on saving my cashola for a trip to Europe about the time he he plays, if he does. Well, whatever, talk to you all later. Check the mikelindup.com Shows page for updated tour details. Also, I don't think Mike will be joining the PPF on the 21st July. Mike will make an announcement regarding this on mikelindup.com very soon. He hopes to meet other digesters, I'm not sure of the plans just yet. Da Lata start at 18:30, this is a free show, so come and enjoy the music. Other bands will play afterwards. I'll probably try to hook up with Charle as I'll be in London, let me know if you want to join in - I'll give you my mobile no. if necessary. I was cleaning out my sent mail and I thought this made it to the digest but this is the exact day the digest went down for a month. As it's just over 6 months past and 6 months to go (except for those folks in Australia), I thought I'd share some holiday thoughts. Date: 12/18/99 To: Level42 @ worldmachine.com Happy holiday season, Son David, age 8, asks if every rock group has Christmas music out, which makes me wonder if Level 42 ever did ANY type of Christmas or holiday music of ANY sort. Wife Cathy, then asks if the Gould Brothers are Jewish. (you had to be there) And a public cry for help in locating a Christmas track by the Yobs entitled, "Yobs on 45". Anybody able to do me a copy? Does anyone know what I am talking about? Well, if you do, I'd appreciatie your knowledge on how the hell he does that, cos I've tried and it sounds nothing like it! Thank you. >> I haven't seen any of those performances, but sounds as if you're describing "tapping" (a technique used by electric 6-string guitarists (and by acoustic guitarists) whereby the "playing" fingers "tap" strings up somewhere along the neck near the finger/s fretting a string on the neck.) Sounds great on a standard 6-six string, but very interesting on an electric bass, OR, he could be playing harmonics, of which Mark uses a lot on Forever Now, whereby a finger lightly touches a string, but not holding down and fretting the string, while the player plucks a string, quickly removing the "fretting" finger from the string. A neat bell-tone sounds from the string whose note is a "harmonic" of the string and note represented by the fret nearby (I'm weak on music theory, so it's hard for me to explain, but in a nutshell, depending on where the "fretting" finger touches the string is what determines the harmonic equivalent of a note (ex., the 9th fret on the low E string is C#, and if you touched your finger to the string right above that given fret and plucked the string, preferably past the pickups, you would get a harmonic note. There are also m any more harmonics along a string not necessarily determined by frets - there can be 4 or 5 harmonics on a string between two frets! Someone gimme a hand explaining the mathematical explanation about the division of a string that determines the harmonic! Listen to the intro and first few bars of "Play Me" on Forever Now, and "Hours By The Window" for those harmonics, among others. For tapping, listen to anything by Michael Manring (an electric bass virtuoso with Windham Hill) and for harmonics. I think I've figured out how to play "Yankee Doodle" in harmonics on the bass as well as "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star". This second one sounds better in harmonics, I think.
