This was Mark shouting out before one of the L42 tracks from a live concert, can't remember which but no doubt there will be hundreds, ok, a few people telling me which concert. I have got it but can't be arsed to find it right now. The dance track is from an album, didn't catch the full title but it ends in "Rock". Steve Lamacq rated it very highly, to me it was a bit of L42 sampling and Marks bit repeated many times over a tinny drum/bass loop - but thats what its all about these days. Anyone have any idea who/what it was? My only other thought was to mail Lamacq and ask - Lisa (BBC microphone anorak) do you have any insider knowledge? DAVID COUSINS - the line you are referring to "welcome to the house of Usher" refers to a tale by gothic horror writer Edgar Allen Poe (of pit and the pendulum fame ) called "The Fall of the House of Usher" It is a bit of a weird one but then so is the song "past Lives" but you can get some idea from the book as to the song. if you want to read it look for a book called "The Fall of house of Usher and other writings" published by Penguin books for a bargain £5.99. if you want a vopy let me know and i will sort it for you. Coming soon to www.mrspink.co.uk is a complete section on the books that have spawned level 42 songs. Notably Dialogue with death - arthur Koestler (hours by the window) Staring at the sun - Julian Barnes (song of the same) and loads more - if you wanna contribute let me know at webmaster @ mrspink.co.uk thats all and David, I hope that was helpful! Lisa 'Mrs Pink' ------------------------------ Subject: Other covers From: "ztavendl" Date: Thu, 22 Jun 2000 13:52:58 +0100 Hi Levelheads, I think this subject on L42 doing covers is great; so here's my top three and reasons why: I cant go for that- Daryl Hall and John Oates This has got to be one of my favourite songs ever, I think Mark King could do some great vocals on this; apparently a very difficult song to do. And of course, we all know Mike Lindup has a great falsetto, and I think this would be excellent for a cover. A new flame- Simply Red Another one of my favourites, i think Mark could play some excellent slap on this, overall a great song. They could all do a percussion solo right in the middle of it, that would be great! September- EWF Probably the best disco song ever (I think), and 'cos its by my favourite band this has to be in. I know L42 would struggle with the horn section, but Mike's falsetto might just be able to Philip Bailey's and I think Mark could sing it just as good, and he could play a slapped bass line, making it more funky. (Oh yeah, what about "Galaxy of love" by the Crown heights affair"!) Cheers for your time Tavs the tiny bass player ------------------------------ Subject: Lying Still on the radio?? From: "Jackson, Lolita" Date: Thu, 22 Jun 2000 09:20:16 -0400 >> >> I still think "Lying Still" is the most romantic. Just listen to the lyrics. The sound is quite sweet, too. I still hear that song all the time on the "quiet storm" jazz stations and is still a "jazz" favorite in the States. That's so great that L42 can touch people on a lot of different levels.>> Fred, where do you live? I ask this because Lying Still is one of my all time favorites [a few of us actually recorded a version of this last summer], and in the 15 years since the song came out I have never heard it on the radio. Ever. If you live in the States, its great to hear that some DJ out there put it on his or her playlist, and I'm jealous that you get the delicious treat of enjoying the song when you don't expect to hear it. It's the first song I'd think of if I were ever to be questioned by someone conducting a survey on 'music to do it by'. The conga and dreamy keyboard intro is so sensual, and as for the vocals and strings... well, all you need is a little candlelight and I'm sure it wouldn't be long before things got interesting.. >> I always thought that Romance was actually pretty cheesy, myself, (the string section's just a little too much for me) until I got on a kick to listen specifically to the drums on the whole Forever Now CD. The drums save this song altogether. The drums are integral to lots of songs on FN. As for myself, Why Are You Leaving is pretty good, as is Out of Sight Out of Mind... but they have those negative "I'm losing you/I've lost you" overtones. It's just as well... my husband is a much more blues/rock hard-edged guitar kind of guy... so I listen to these like so many women read romance novels. They just put me in the mood. ------------------------------ Subject: covers.. From: "willem en kirsti" Date: Thu, 22 Jun 2000 16:39:48 +0200 Level 42 covering ?....let me think... 1 i would like to hear Kajagoogoo's "Big Apple" covered by the boys; imagine how Mark's slapping technique will show off Nick's ! ( thoug N is a great bass(chapman stick) player, check out f.i. Big bubbles no troubles...Ellis Beggs and Howard) 2 Scritti Politti's "Absolute " Mike's voices will be fantastic to this one ! 3 Todd Rundren's "hello its me" Mark did this on the Lalalalive show in Holland; I my opinion Mark's voices do perfect fit into this one. Of course Toots Thielemans has to join. I dare to say this version beats Todd's one !!!!!! 4 Nik Kershaw's "Easy".............Mark and Mike's voices. 5 Montana Sextet (vincent and Eileen) "who needs enemys"....just because its a killer !!! From: "M. Payne" Date: Thu, 22 Jun 2000 15:15:34 CDT Sorry for the change in mood in the following posting and I am very sorry to the other 1300 honest and sincere people that have to see and read this, for the newer digest members PLEASE do not use my posting here as what normally goes on here: I received an email from a UK digest member complaining about a digest member in the UK about the quality of the MK Wolverhampton video. Not only did I find out from this email that this digest member was mass copying this tape themselves (and lied saying that it was someone else, then claimed that they had Mark's permission to do this), but have two prominent digester also in on this scheme and is charging about US$40.00 for each tape. I shot this video for fans for FREE and will not tolerate anybody making money off of this! Consider this your final warning! I know that what I did to videotape this concert was in itself not ethical, although I was front row and Mark I'm sure wanted to know what that little red light was centre stage, and security I'm sure must have seen me. So I will admit a bit of wrongdoing taping this and distributing (FREE) without Mark's permission, but this videocopying racket needs to stop now, what must I do to stop this? I will not hesitate to post your names (now that I finally know who is doing this) after this first and final plea to you, and I trust that it will be YOU, not me, that loses all credibility with this forum! This I truly hope will be the last time I have to waste my time writing this and harping on this subject! Here endeth the lecture.... David, The reference is to a story by Edgar Allen Poe called "The Fall of the House of Usher". If you're not familiar with his work, Poe was an American writer whose stories often dealt with the morbid, bizarre and horrific. This particular story tells of a traveler who comes to visit a childhood friend at the House of Usher. Within its walls he witnesses the demise of his friend and his sister, they two are the last in the Usher line. Check it out, Poe was an excellent storyteller. TCOY, Nathania P.S.
