Just wanted to say thanks, because until a few months ago when I joined the Digest I didn't know there were two versions of Forever Now. And then yesterday I popped into a small record shop here in Tallinn, and there it was - the Resurgence version. And the shop even had a sale on with 25% off everything! It was a very strange feeling to hear new (to me) Level 42 stuff after such a long time. I really like the six 'new' songs, although some of them sound almost like they were written with someone else in mind to sing them. For example, Time Will Heal sounds to me just the kind of song someone like Amy Grant would do. And sorry if this has been asked before, but what is the relevance of the "House of Usher" reference on Past Lives? I remember a month or so back there was the question of how to convince our 'other halves' that we really have to buy the reissues. Well, my wife seems quite content to let me buy them (most of them at least), provided I let her buy a similar number of Depeche Mode CDs. I guess it's a sacrifice I'll have to make... David ------------------------------ Subject: Romance From: "Mark Summers" Date: Wed, 21 Jun 2000 13:45:11 -1000 Jenny The song "Romance" is good to get slushy with but my favourite to slow dance to is "Out of Sight Out Of Mind" from SITD. It's great to make love to also and you can then talk for the remaining minute. :o) Mark Summers www.msummers.force9.co.uk www.msummers.force9.co.uk/level42.htm ------------------------------ Subject: More Curiosity / Calling Ronald! Imagine Gary Husband beating the drums senseless. Stoned Soul Picnic - Swing Out Sister. Their cover of this song reminded me of the sound the Levels had for Prince's Trust 1989. Chicago Song - David Sanborn. Instrumental, featured in the film "Frantic." Hen-pecked horns, Mark picking up Marcus Miller's bass line. Love & Happiness - Al Green. Mark and Mike could do some intereting things with the vocals. Who Is He (And What Is He To You) - Bill Withers. Again, a good vocal for Mark. Papa Was a Rollin' Stone - Temptations. This would require good female backing. Bad Love - Eric Clapton. Alan Murphy and Gary Husband would have cooked on this. Shaft II - Isaac Hayes. This is an instrumental version of the classic, with some really great bass. Superstition - Stevie Wonder. Having heard Stevie Ray Vaughan's cover recently, I can see all sorts of possibilities for this. Josie - Steely Dan. A "bad attitude" groove which Mark plays so well. Lovely Day - Bill Withers. Seems a natch for the Levels, musically speaking. Live and Let Die - Paul McCartney. Play it as an instrumental with a large orchestra, and let it rip. Now, can we just get them to re-form to play this set? shuf ------------------------------ Subject: Lyndon From: "Mike Brooks" Date: Wed, 21 Jun 2000 18:41:41 +0100 You can see Lyndon play around London & the south east with The Gear Junkies for those interested. But I just had to put in my penny's worth in on this one Surely I'm not the only one of 1310 digesters who thinks that 'Romance' is the ultimate 'kiss to this' song of ANY band? It's the first song I'd think of if I were ever to be questioned by someone conducting a survey on 'music to do it by'. The conga and dreamy keyboard intro is so sensual, and as for the vocals and strings... well, all you need is a little candlelight and I'm sure it wouldn't be long before things got interesting.. (I must stress I haven't actually tried romancing to 'Romance' myself, but the opportunity would be a fine thing) Ooh, baby, baby, don't give up on me... Keith ------------------------------ Subject: Digest #114 ; to baste or not to baste... From: "kevin mooneyy" Date: Thu, 22 Jun 2000 00:27:29 GMT Apologies to Asha Fotos, and others for refering to 'Take a Look' as "a big old turkey", it's a fine song, but I just don't like the chord-changes. I prefer the lads' earlier stuff. My first exposure to the band was buying the 12" of 'love Games', back in the Pleistoscene Era. It's interesting to see different Level-Headed peoples' favourite choices of songs, when & where they got converted, and their favorite incantation of the group Which brings us nicely to... obscure 80's bands. Does anyone know anything about an act called 'Central Line',sorta Jazz-Funk East-London,in yer bedroom analogue-synth stylee? ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V2000 #120 From: Cymrusmc @ aol.com Date: Wed, 21 Jun 2000 20:55:27 EDT In a message dated 6/21/00 3:20:01 AM Pacific Daylight Time, Level42-request @ worldmachine.com writes: << Well it's not looking too good really so I'll go back with "Sweet Love" by Anita Baker (not the foul new version that was out a month or two ago in the UK). regards jase >> What new version of "Sweet Love"? She redid it, or did someone cover it?! I'm a big Anita Baker fan from the beginning (even from Chapter 8), and it's a hard song to do! But hey: "Lying Still" is probably the best slowie by L42, and mayble alongside "It's Over". "Lying Still" doesn't have the synth sounds that may sorta ruin the romantic sond, meethinks. But me, I'd take a rock-out instrumental such as "The Pursuit Of Accidents" any day! --Fred, The Two-Bit Bassist ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V2000 #120 From: Cymrusmc @ aol.com Date: Wed, 21 Jun 2000 21:01:08 EDT In a message dated 6/21/00 3:20:01 AM Pacific Daylight Time, Level42-request @ worldmachine.com writes: << Reading Susan's charming post about the Ape got me thinking: What song would you consider the most romantic? Somehow I don't think ppl would choose It's Over, just because of the lyrics. ;) Three Words is kind cute, but maybe Two Solitudes is more my style...umm, I have to think about this... Jennix >> >> "Two Solitudes" is a nice song, but I don't find it romantic. It's more like a "breakup" song than a romantic sort of song. I still think "Lying Still" is the most romantic. Just listen to the lyrics. The sound is quite sweet, too. I still hear that song all the time on the "quiet storm" jazz stations and is still a "jazz" favorite in the States. That's so great that L42 can touch people on a lot of different levels. --Fred, The Two-Bit Bassist ------------------------------ Subject: The World We Live in/Dutch fans From: "Norman van den Wildenberg" Date: Thu, 22 Jun 2000 08:36:49 +0200 Hi Levelheads, Someone can help me to a shrink.....
