Good solid English expression, that. This is "pants" in the context "trollies", "keks", "Y-fronts", "skid-bags", "grundys", "nut holders" etc. It means "something that's not very good". That track resides on the album "Staring at the Sun", which just happens to be the FIRST tape I ever recognized under the group Level 42. It holds a very special place in my life, especially since the commercialized sounds of 'Something About You' and 'Starchild'--heard long before on the radio--didn't capture my attention long enough to find out who was singing. If it had not been for my older brother Mitchell liking that tape--that particular one--(he is not a Level 42 fan), I might never have discovered one of my favorite groups of all time (which is slim pickings for me since I have a wide collection of musical genre but only three groups I would call "my very own")! A note to all fans great and small: There are many of us out here who really like songs that might never make it to radio. Very FEW songs on the "greatest hits" albums are at the top of my list, I can tell you THAT! I LIKE the song "My Hero". It has a haunting chorus and is my favorite track on the recently purchased "True Colors" album. Before I heard it, somebody had ragged on it so heavily, I found myself biased against it at first. All I can say is that I hope to hear the song "The Ape" real soon. Nobody seems to like that one, so maybe I will... But on a lighter note, now that I have climbed off of the soap box, Kevin which songs do you enjoy that never made it (as far as I know) to radio, but you feel the world should have been allowed to hear? My three picks of the day are "Standing in the Light", "Shapeshifter", and "Dream Crazy". ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V2000 #113 From: MMit9601 @ aol.com Date: Wed Jun 14 08:19:50 2000 Hi, I'm in London until Friday the 16th (I'm from Chicago, USA.) From: Dar4Bass @ aol.com Date: Wed, 14 Jun 2000 09:25:32 EDT Levelheads, This may not be the forum for this, but I need some help on this one. Several years ago, I heard this tune by a band called Curiosity Killed The Cat called 'Down to Earth.' Never saw or heard from them again. I recently downloaded Napster, did a search and found this song, along with a few others- I definitely dig the sound. Can any of you give me some insight into them (websites, discography, videos)? I ask since maybe they are popular in the UK. About 17 years ago, I went through the same problem with L42-Starchild was a big dance hit in the clubs (I'm in New York), but no one that I knew had any info on them. Then I met some people from the UK who were able to enlighten me. Anything you could send my way would be greatly appreciated. I posted a mail to the digest, but I must have done something wrong, because my message never made it to the digest (yes, I am blond...). I know of an ex-mark bass that was not mentioned before, it is now owned by a guy named Eric van Ligten. He lives in my neighbourhood. I don't think he is 'into' internet. If anyone wants to know more, drop me a line and I will try to contact him for more details. The Chinese Way .... uggghhh! > Tino, Brian, couldn't agree with you more. Pursuit of Accidents is a great album, but Chinese Way sucks (compared to other songs on POA) I'm skipping it always. I like POA, the way it's produced - is just great!!! Seems like '70 production (I like that feel). And, Talking in Your Sleep is one of my favorite songs... Also Billy's Gone is great (there are many people that don't love these songs) Zak, I'm so happy that Steely Dan is back, better than ever (I pray God for this to happen to L42). They sold more disks than Oasis. Seems that people turns after all to... good music! > Buy a five hundred dollar eddects rack and you can make your bass sound > like a fricken oboe, that should end that discussion. > Bri, yes, It seems that this ends discussion :)) Good compressor> chorus> EQ>Amp.....just makes you sound like god (if you are one of those who can play :) Anyway, few days ago I've uploaded my new song on mp3.com.... check it and give me feedback if you like it (or don't:). I absolutely love that version of the song. Mark looked like he was having the time of his life while playing it, and it is the only instance I have ever heard of him playing true R&B bass. It is one of my favorite instances of him playing while not singing. My mate John's an even bigger fan than me so I'll have ask him. I have to ask this (I'm probably insulting your intelligence now so please bear with me! :o) but the song your thinking of is not Canned Heat?? Thanks Bye! dale ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Talking in your sleep. From: "Eric Gonzalez" Date: Thu, 15 Jun 2000 11:25:47 +1000 I've got to agree with Brian Bowman regarding "Talking in your sleep" and the entire "Forever Now" album. They're both great. Listen to the album carefully a couple of times and you'll find an album where every song is eminently listenable and likeable. That's not something that you find with every band. And you can say this about every other L42 album. You get good songs for your money, not album fillers. Its all fine and well to say "this song is bad" or whatever you want to say about it. The real test is this: try to compose music and lyrics of a similar quality yourself (and quantity). Then you'll see it from the bands' side of things. All bands evolve and you could hardly expect L42 not to evolve over a 15 year period. Heck, its still recognisable as L42, no matter what album you listen to. (I'm not talking about the solo albums here). While I work at my computer, I listen to a number of different artists, and I include L42. 'Forever now' seemed strange at first, but it just grows on you. The point is this: even if you think one particular song stinks, others love it and L42 went to some trouble to write the lyrics and music. Good songwriting could be said to be scarce these days.(At least I do). I readily admit it when one of todays bands writes a good song, but it seems to me, IMHO, that these are few and far between. My wife doesn't like L42, but, she doesn't have to. Its all a matter of opinion, but the point still holds that good songwriting is a gift. I could name other band's albums that I have in my collection,(but I won't), where no amount of listening will convince me that they haven't thrown in album-filling-fodder. And I have a wide-ranging taste in music from classical to jazz to rock to whatever you want to call it. Forever Now. Eric Gonzalez ------------------------------ Subject: Jamiroquai (for Brian) From: ZW75 @ aol.com Date: Wed, 14 Jun 2000 22:32:53 EDT Hey Brian, That song Just Dance from Jamiroquai is actually called "Canned Heat" and it's from the Synkronized CD that came out last year. It's definetly a funky CD...I love Jamiroquai (I am sure other digesters do too.) I bought the Japanese version which has an extra track called "Gettinfunky" an instrumental with some nice bass synth work, not available on the US version. That was pretty hilarious about buying the $500 dollar bass effects box to make your bass sound like an oboe LOL!! Take care! Peace, Zanchie Whitehead ------------------------------ Subject: Re-issue promotion????????? From: "David Webster" Date: Thu, 15 Jun 2000 09:37:30 +0100 Hi y'all, Just thought I'd share my thoughts about these re-issues with you all. I't great to hear that Polydor might actually do a bit of promotion for these. However, judging by the promo they did for TVBOLFT last year, can we really rely on them?????? We have all heard that should the re's be successfull, then we may be given a chance of another album containing 'previously unheard' tracks. That's fantastic, but what do polydor class as being 'successfull'!!! 100 copies sold? 1000 copies sold? 100000 copies sold? We will never know. To be honest, if every member on the digest buys the re's then (at last count) that would only be 1310 of each re-issued album??? Not really successfull sales there!!! So we are left to rely on Polydors promotion tactics for their success!!! Or are we. Well no, I think every DIE HARD fan has a part to play here. We are only about two months away from the re's so it's time to start re-familiarising those who vaguly remember LFT and would otherwise not bat an eyelid at the sight of the re's sitting on the shelf in the Virgin Megastore. What am I talking about I hear you cry?????? What we have to do is start bugging our local/national radio stations with our requests for LFT tracks, with a little reference to the re's coming out soon??? Is this asking to much. I don't think it is. Yeah we know a few stations play the odd LFT track once in a while but we should be hearing them everyday up until the end of the year. Hopefully, this will help the sales as 'those people' will then pick up the CD and purchase it too!!!!!!!!! I'm certainly going to e-mail a few radio stations with my requests, and reference to the forthcoming re's, in the hope that the 'DJ' will play the track and mention the re's too!! For all the Londoners on the digest, Heart 106.2 have an 80's night every Friday, so get mailing now!!!! But wherever you live, be it UK, Germany, Holland, USA, Pluto, get mailing your local radio station requesting 'our boys', and let's make sure we get this extra CD!!!!!!!!!!! I've babbled on enough now, but your thoughts on my idea are welcomed, or if anyone has a better idea, let's hear it too. One last thing before I go, ENGLAND 3 - 0 GERMANY (Did you see that pig go flying past the window then dear????)
