Worst L42 song; 'Take a Look', it's a big old turkey, don't know which album it comes from but it is near the end of the otherwise stupendous Level Best video. Which brings us nicely to... 'Children Say',one of my all-time favorite songs, and especialy enhanced by the Paris setting. For the person who wanted to know the exact locations for the vid. I can only recognise the Montmartre district, and the Eglise du Sacre Coeur at the top of the hill. I'd love to know where the other places are. Are there any guitarists and/or keyboard-players out there? cos this site is a wee bit Bass-heavy. yours sincerely kevmooney. ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V2000 #112 From: Dar4Bass @ aol.com Date: Tue, 13 Jun 2000 09:48:34 EDT In a message dated 6/13/00 6:13:30 AM Eastern Daylight Time, Level42-request @ worldmachine.com writes: << What I want to say is that the whole sound thing is depending on many factors. Having worked in music instrument retail, I cannot recall how many times I have tried to make someone understand this, only to hear them say that they want "this" bass, or "that" sound. I have Music Mans, Ibanezes and a Washburn in my arsenal, and it doesn't matter which one I play-I still sound like me. John Entwhistle could play a $100 piece of crap, he'd still sound like Entwhistle. It's in your hands and your inspiration that make your sound. The instrument is just a means to and end. Many of them don't for a standard account, but do on their more expensive upgrade accounts. But it makes no difference: if you you FrontPage 2000 extensions on your site, they won't work for users with Netscape. At least, that's been my experience. >> they don't give a damn about the venerable art of bass-making, only >> about the profits in whoring out a classic American trademark. > > It wouldn't be a classic American trademark if it hadn't been whored out > for profits, it's the American way. Whoa, now!! What are you, a communist? There's a big difference in honest commerce and trading on a good name to sell cheap, sorry junk. When Leo Fender and George Fullerton ran the company, they sold an innovative product for a very reasonable price - THAT's how the Fender name became a "classic American trademark". Then, Fenders were are made in one shop in the good ol' USA. Now, it's hard to tell what nationality of slave-labor tacks these things together. > hey, I'm not really a fan... just passing along the info since I know there are > some 'admirers of the Dan' out there. The lyrics -- excellent! Anyone who doesn't think Forever Now was one of the band's top three studio albums probably can't get much past World Machine (if that far) in the 42 catalogue. FN is musically mature and easily has the best lyrics of any 42 album. I think it took real guts to put such a self-revealing song such as Don't Bother Me on that album, and Mark actually sang it (when so much of it seems to be directed at him). Don't get me wrong ... I love much of the material in the early albums (I'm a big Pursuit of Accidents fan) ... but few of those songs have stood the test of time for me ... and some are just about unlistenable (gasp!) anymore ... The Chinese Way .... uggghhh! Sorry if I pissed anyone off with this one ... Bo ------------------------------ Subject: More about Steely Dan... From: Zak.Nilsson @ latimes.com Date: Tue, 13 Jun 2000 10:36:50 -0700 Since all the cool kids seem to be talking about it... Just yesterday I received my copy of Steely Dan: Two Against Nature Plush TV Jazz-Rock Party DVD. This was a concert recorded at Sony Studios in New York. The DVD has stereo, Dolby 5.1 Surround and also DTS 5.1 surround mixes of the music, and of course it's also the video of the concert itself. There's little bits of interviews thrown in here and there inbetween tracks, and the 5.1 mix is really clean and clear. This was definitely a worthwhile purchase for me, even though I already bought the Two Against Nature CD. The track listing is: Green Earrings Cousin Dupree Bad Sneakers Janie Runaway Josie FM Gaslighting Abbie Black Friday Babylon Sisters Kid Charlemagne Jack of Speed Peg What a Shame About Me Pretzel Logic I only wish they had also done The Glamour Profession. :) And my other Dan news is that I'm going to see them at Universal Studios tomorrow (Wednesday) night. :) L42 connection... um... well tonight I'll be loading up a few minidiscs with L42 and some other stuff so I'll have something to listen to when I'm on the plane to New Hampshire later this week. Mmm, minidisc. :) Zak Nilsson "It's a cold crime... a deadly sting" ------------------------------ Subject: Pure crap, don't even bother reading From: Daniel James Date: Tue, 13 Jun 2000 13:39:55 -0700 > Can anyone tell me if most ISPs support FrontPage 2000 files on > standard account web sites as my ISP does not ? I bought "The Chinese Way" on 12" for 60p I sure think it's sort more than a quid. I've seen it advertised on Esprit for quite a bit more than that (but more than I wanted to pay so I didn't pay much attention to the price and I don't recall what they were charging). > Go and rent at your video store a copy of the movie "Entrapment" which > starred Sean Connery. And let's see how many people pick up what the > "connection" was between the two. Let's see, I can think of one connection between MI:2 and Entrapment. They both held lots of promise, had some good action scenes but otherwise generally sucked. I do apologize for not getting back to those who asked me about the Level 42 reference. As Winston said, it is just the 42nd floor of a building and the display on the elevator says, "Level 42". > In Response to Deans piece on Will Downing. I have a video of the 1989 > Princes Trust concert at the NEC Birmingham ( which I attended), where > Level 42 were the backing musicians for all the acts including a duet > with Will Downing and Mica Paris called "Where is the Love". That version of Free rocks. I've finally heard the version on his album and while it's nice, it lacks the energy and funk that Mark's bass playing ads to the track. I've been meaning to put up a decent quality mp3 version of it on my site, but I haven't had any time to do that sort of thing lately. But just to put it in perspective, I rarely watch or listen to the Level 42 tracks on the Princes Trust video. I bought it specifically because I I had heard a low-quality mono recording of Free that Carl sent me and I wanted a good quality version. Wait a minute, did I just say that a freely downloaded version of a song led me to purchase an album/video? Woah, doesn't that contradict all the Napster naysayers? Oops, I'll stay away from that subject, it's been beat to death elsewhere. ------------------------------ Subject: bASSES From: "Brian Flint" Date: Tue, 13 Jun 2000 15:22:48 PDT To JWC, thanks for reiterating what I've already said :D Sometimes it takes two, I guess. Buy a five hundred dollar eddects rack and you can make your bass sound like a fricken oboe, that should end that discussion. Speaking of Bassists, does anyone know what John Avila is up to these days. What with Danny doing his scores and Steve attepting his own, I know not where John has gone. I'm still trying to figure out from whence the Jamiroquai song Just Dance comes from, help would be appreciated. That's all for now.
