Ahhh... at last, a fellow Will Downing fan ! I've been listening to Will since his debut in 1988 and have every album. Even saw him live in my hometown Cambridge (England) in 1990 and he was truly special. His voice is smooth and deep, and kicks people like Luther into touch i have to say. There isn't much at all about Will on the internet. It's been 2 years since PLEASURES OF THE NIGHT with Gerald Albright came out so we must hopefully be due an album on original material soon....(fingers crossed) TCOY DEAN ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Subject: Bootsie Collins + re: From: "Norman van den Wildenberg" Date: Sat, 10 Jun 2000 13:34:14 +0200 > > Most unlikeliest Collaboration of the year ?? > Bootsey Collins teaming up with FATBOY SLIM ......urghh They allready teamed up back in 1998, as I have a CD5 of Party Lick a Ble's Think what you want, but it sounds great. Can someone email me privately as to the 42 references in Mission Impossible 2 film ? Finally, has a date been sat for the release of the re-issues in August ? Will they all be released at the same time ? Will any promo work be released as well ? Answers on a postcard please.... However, any excuse to hear Don Z rant against the enemy of mankind, the dreaded FENDER bass, is good enuff for me. :-) (just kidding about the bass talk, i know how to scroll, so please dont start famling me. this was a JOKE, ok?) Don has also made some very interesting points in this record company debate. Especially regarding cassettes. Jason & Sherry, i've never heard of this 'OULL' album. Is it now available? If you havent, check out Richard Pages solo album titled 'SHELTER ME', damn good. Funky T, the L42 reference in MI:2, is so damn lame, you will surely be disapointed. Needless to say there is a 42nd floor in the movies. Whoop de shit. I did enjoy the moview, much more than the first one. John Woo stil knows his way around an action scene, but the flick got very slow in the middle, lots of romance. James, to sum this up quickly, Mark wears tape because he once split his thumb playing the bass so hard. I have no idea what happened to Leroy Williams. Leroy was a member of the brit-funk band 'Hi-Tension' back in the 80's, but seems to have disapeared. I do believe that Polydor has some decent promo plans for the re-issues, even including some band members. Look for print, radio and tv ads or interviews. Keep in mind that it's very rare for a record company to do much advertising for a remix album. I think remixes are prob not very popular sellers, unless we are talking of a dance band. David, checl all the mjor L42 sites for lyrics. I recall quite a few people doing full sets of lyrics for the trash album. How does this improve the slapping?.........I've tried it and it doesn't feel much different!" If you listen to the epxpohall gig, which is on real audio at forevernow.com and on MP3 at the level 42 MP3 resource centre, some one asks him that question. He said that because he slaps it quite hard, he starts to get sore thumbs, so he uses it to be sensible. Mark also says that it does not sound as good when this is done. ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V2000 #109 From: "Alex Humphries" Date: Sat, 10 Jun 2000 18:43:25 +0100 on level42.com, their is last chance in real audio, but at the beging Mark thinks it is eyes waterfalling, and says it is based on a book by someone called Herman Hesse. I looked him up on Amazon, and I presumed the book would be called something like 'the legacy' or some thing allong them lines. Does any one know about this? ------------------------------ Subject: tape on your thumb From: "Jason Bell" Date: Sat, 10 Jun 2000 19:55:04 BST James wrote >>1) Why does mark wear tape around his thumb? It may not do anything for the sound, but it does stop the skin on your thumb splitting, which has happened to me a couple of times. The thing is everyone who sees your gig just thinks you are out to be Mark King. So I'm off to shave all my hair off, grow a mustache and be Tony Levin, yeah right !. I now have one or two more for you people..........and I apoplogise if you've heard them before, but i need to know? 1) Why does mark wear tape around his thumb? How does this improve the slapping?.........I've tried it and it doesn't feel much different! >> From what I can see, Mark often uses electrical tape around his thumb because of his energetic slapping technique. Slapping so much can eventually lead to blistering the side of your thumb. I myself have split my skin open on my thumb from slapping and bled all over my bass without even knowing. Split the skin and bled quite a lot! It didn't hurt too much, though. So, I tried using electrical tape, and it works quite well, but after a while, a sweaty thumb can make the tape slip off and you'd have to replace the tape. The tape is just there to protect the thumb and reduce the chance of a sore or bleeding thumb. I even tried taping a penny to my thumb to see what kind of neat effect I could get, and it sounded rather interesting. --Fred, The Two-Bit Bass Player ------------------------------ Subject: From: "Allwyn and Laura Kelly" Date: Sat, 10 Jun 2000 22:40:16 -0700 Hey look I remembered this time................WARNING NON LEVEL 42 POST AHEAD!! The Godfather of slap Larry Graham used an unmodified Jazz Bass in the seventies. Listen to "Hair" from GCS. Great slap-sound. JWC Bronski
