From: "JENNY LINDSKOG" Date: Fri, 9 Jun 2000 14:28:46 +0200 OK, not many ppl will know what I'm talking about, but what the heck... There's a great Canadian show called Lexx. In one ep one of the characters talk about some girls he's been...erm, having fun with. Now, in a place like this, the girls have numbers. Guess what number he slept with? Moving on, as this probably didn't interest anyone. Three Words is one of the best! Love it, love it! :D And what's this about a free Mike Lindup concert? Can someone mail me privately? Bilal, do you know anything? Is there a L42 chat? If so, could you show me the way or perhaps you want to party without me? ;) Jennix ------------------------------ Subject: Lyrics From: "murgatroyd" Date: Fri, 9 Jun 2000 14:05:37 +0100 Caught a new 'train' yesterday thanks to the discussion about The Ape ("Nice groove, weak-ass lyrics" I think was the quote), and the suggestion that the guys were great Muso's but weak lyricists. Thought therefore I would add my tuppenyworth. I never fail to be amazed at the genius of one particular track's lyrics - these being Talking in your Sleep. From the unfolding plot in a book to the seaside town where the lights have gone down the lyric is a masterpiece. Did Mark write these anyone know? And, does anyone else have any lyrics which they particularly like and wish to share? Chris M Appropriately perhaps... I know that this is ancient news, but can anyone back this up? Speaking of Mr. Mister, did you guys know that they recorded an album in 1988-89 called "Pull" that was never released? I've heard all of it - it's a shame that they never released it, because it 's a damn good album! Sound-wise, it's more progressive than their earlier stuff, and it kinda picks up where "Go On" leaves off. Buzz Feiten (Larsen - Feiten Band) takes over the guitar duties from Steve Ferris, who was touring with Whitesnake (!) at the time. Thanks to all recent and current bidders for my eBay Level 42 stuff - I'll be selling my 12" and 7" L42 records hopefully next week... Anyone here going to see Average White Band while on their recent tour? Go West will be releasing a live album from their final tour (1993) in the coming months! Thanks for the Alan Murphy website, it was long overdue. Love (In A Peaceful World). I've been playing 18 years and have worked at 2 of the biggest music chains here in the States. It doesn't matter which model of the Jazz you use (Mexican, American, Custom), that bass was not designed with slapping in mind. There have been people who have made modifications (i.e. Marcus Miller) that have given Jazz Basses great sound, but I agree with you, the neck and body aren't that comfortable-though many people DO love it. It's all a matter of preference. I have small hands, so I prefer basses like the Ibanez Soundgear-lightweight, with a slim neck. I also love the Music Man (I own 2)- great sound, but try running around onstage with one for 90 minutes!! I recently tried (and bought) the high-end 5 string Washburn, the XB925 (XB920 is the 4 string version). Needles to say, that bass is smooth!! Washburns were never this good when I first started playing, so I was partial against them. But now, WOW!! Mine has a Bubinga top and Bartolini electronics. I would definitely recommend it all the players out there in level land-check this one!!! Thanx for the additional bass recommendations from everyone out there (you know who you are). I'm still taking notes people! In regards to 52nd Street, I remember (if memory serves correctly) that they had two Top 40 urban hits back in the mid eighties. The first was "Tell Me (How It Feels)", and the second was "Something's Going On". As a matter of fact, Will Downing (who is an incredibly talented r&b vocalist) covers "Something's Going On" on his 1991 cd entitled "A Dream Fufilled", which also features an excellent version of Angela Bofill's "I Try". At the time, Will was signed to Island Records, and I had several occassions to meet and talk with him (during my days at PolyGram). And yes folks, there is a Level 42 connection! Will was an avid fan of both Mark King and Level 42, and also commented that he wished people in the States knew more about them. So as you can see, the love of Level 42 does indeed pop up in places where you least expect it! Speaking of which, what is the L42 referemce in MI:2 that everyone's been referring to? Can someone let the cat out of the bag, as I haven't as of yet seen the movie. Have a great weekend everyone. Be kind...be cool.....and be funky (in the good sense of the word that is)!! I don't buy your > statement. So you're saying that everyone who gets a free copy of a song would necessarily have bought the record if they couldn't have gotten it free? That is just asinine. Ever heard of the "try before you buy" concept? I've been turned on to new artists by first taping a friend's CD, which in turn led to me making legitimate purchases by the artist later on. It's the same idea behind releasing singles to radio. You put a song out there for free consumption to promote record sales. > << If you really want an album, you also want the graphics, the box, etc. >> > > If that was true then there would have never been a need for blank cassette tapes. Wrong again. The high-quality blank cassette revolution grew out of the record industry's very low-quality commercial cassette releases. This was well before the CD arrived on the scene. In those days, an audiophile would buy a new LP, play it only once to tape it, then put it away. We'd play the cassettes instead, so as not to wear out the LP, and to provide portability to the car (no Walkmans yet, either). My own cassette copies were so much better than those that were commercially available that friends would ask me to tape their albums for them. And the US Supreme Court ruled that, if you buy an album, you can make as many copies as you want for your own use - no need to double-buy titles (LP and cassette), which of course iritated the RIAA to no end. As for the packaging: if I'm a fan of an artist, I definitely want the legit package. Hell, I have as many as 3 copies of some Level 42 releases, just for the different graphics. Granted, I'm obsessive and perhaps not representative of the average consumer, but I think my basic premise holds true. In the long run, I firmly believe that illegal taping promotes more record sales than it eliminates. In fact, about 10 or so years ago, there was a study which substantiated this view. It was suppressed by the RIAA. Musician magazine did an article on it, as I recall. I say again: the record industry's business model is outdated. They're desperately clinging to old revenue streams, instead of finding new ones. Change is the nature of progress. Internet technology puts control back where it belongs - into the hands of the artists. From: "M. Payne" Date: Fri, 09 Jun 2000 11:45:11 CDT Well, after staying awake until @12:30 AM this morning to watch the Dallas Stars WIN last night after nearly 3 OT's, I had flashbacks to last year SC Finals...... Napster, seems like a good idea, but I agree, these record companies are more conerned with $$$$££££, not for the artist, not for culture, not for musical expression, they could really care less and if this helps fans get the material they want, then I am all for it! Remember back in 1990's many artists started playing smaller venues because the fans could see and hear them better and that led to more sold out shows and more profits for the bands. Well the same could be said about what Mark has done with TRASH, these artists no longer need the record companies approval anymore, they can wait until they are released from contract, and put out what they want directly to the fans who want it, it is a WIN WIN situation for all except the biggest losers in that deal, the record execs, which serves them right for severely stiffling the industry the past 10 years! Could you imagine what type of music could have flourished if the emphasis could have been put into producing good music, rather the Hammer, Vanilla Ice, and Wilson Phillips. From: DonZipf @ aol.com Date: Fri, 9 Jun 2000 13:57:21 EDT > I had a dream... > No more record companies on this planet, only music, free > for everybody and forever... Why not? Morgan's dream may seem unreasonable at first, but think about it. Why have record companies existed in the past? Because artists couldn't afford to make or distribute their own recordings. Those two things have changed now: pro-quality recording gear is so cheap that average working folks can afford to have recording studios in their homes. And the internet makes distribution easy, cheap, and effective. Begin to see why the RIAA is crapping in its collective pants? Have you heard about the recent settlement agreement between the 5 largest record companies (Sony, Time-Warner, EMI, BMG, & Universal) and the US Federal Trade Commission? I posted last year about this investigation of price-fixing, and now it looks like consumers will win this one. The recording industry used illegal tactics to put a stop to price-competition of retail music (CD's, videos, etc.), but they got caught. Read a summary here: http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2000/05/cdpres.htm According to FTC esitmates, they've ripped us off for nearly half-a-billion dollars, so I'm not gonna cry for them over copyright infringement on the net. Back to Morgan's idea: What if all music were free, and it was perfectly legal to distribute "pirated" copies? Would artists stop making music? No!!! Even now, the overwhelming majority of songwriters and musicians make their music at a loss. It's less than 1% of us who have big-time hits and make lots of cash. Way less. But even if all music were free and available thru the internet, enterprising record companies would find ways to sell recorded music, because they can afford to manufacture the actual CD's and special packaging. And I believe that's gonna be the new business model for the future. In fact, that's basically the way it is now: you can tape songs from radio, TV, or digital cable or satelite broadcasts, etc. If you want the packaging, you can buy it - that's what most of us do, isn't it? I'm sure they can still make megabucks with this model, but even if their profits are reduced - so what? What's wrong with musicians making music for art rather than money? Record companies can still invest in big tours, etc. and I'm sure they can find other creative ways to make a buck. They're just clinging desperately to what's been a tried and true revenue stream for them. But times change, and it's time for them to join the future! Digital technology is freedom for the artist and for the consumer. Too bad for those who are stuck in the past. Peace - Don Z. ------------------------------ Subject: Ibanez Bass & The Shaming Of The True/Kevin Gilbert From: "Dawayne Bailey" Date: Fri, 09 Jun 2000 11:15:58 PDT I noticed the comment about the 80s Ibanez Musician bass. Not really being a bass player, I have one for sale that I've had since the very early 80s. It's a white cream colored pearl kind of color and it's in great shape. Ebony fretboard with abalone inlays and tons of knobs and preamps or whatever the hell they are. You can get a big variety of tones out of that thing but I don't profess to know how good it is or even exactly what year it is-nor even how much to ask for it. On another note, if any of you fans of delicious incredible music haven't heard the late great Kevin Gilbert, you're truly missing out. Any fan of 42 would get off on his music. His estate just released his brilliant Rock opera The Shaming Of The True, which features the incredible Suite Fugue-Dance Of The A&R Staff and City Of The Sun-all song samples at http://www.kevingilbert.com He also co-wrote the classic Toy Matinee record with Patrick Leonard. He released NRG-No Reasons Given-when he was just 17 and if you've never heard his old band's CD Giraffe, you're truly missing out. He produced another killer 80s synth funk CD called NO TWO and his solo record called THUD is also excellent. And MANY more before he died at age 29 in 1996. Blow it off-or do yourself a favor and get off-it's your choice. By the way, once again if anyone knows where I could find a Toy Matinee on 12" vinyl released on WEA in France only in 1990, I will personally give you one million dollars, just like Dr Evil. Thanks for listening and check out The Shaming. ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Subject: JUST LIKE THAT!!!
