I saw one but the action was about 3 feet high, the strings were twenty year old and the neck was incredibly bent - basically a dog! Still it was a nice bass.... While were on the subject of napster I got this radio interview with mark the other day, not the full thing, but it sounded pretty recent. Its actually the only level thing I've downloaded because Napster is pretty rubbish for Level 42 songs. I guess it was a bit presumptious for me to wish for hidden gems and undiscovered tracks though.. When do the reissues come out in August - anyone know? Hope this helps Martin ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Buying a new Bass From: Sean Green Date: Thu, 08 Jun 2000 07:46:51 -0500 Well, Just can't help but step into this one. Yes, I agree that Don Z has made a couple of valid choices. The Foundation is a pretty darn good bass for the money. I played one for about a month, YEARS ago, and it did pretty well, I holds up nicely, but has kind of an imbalance to the tonality. Maybe they've gotten much better though. The Squire is not exactly what I would have in mind for a slapping bass, but it will at least make some kind of sound. Finally, even though some people may think that the Fender Jazz Bass can be construed as the epitome of slap basses, I may differ a little in that opinion. Not to say that they are bad by any means, it's just that I don't like the weight of the body or the feel of their necks. I prefer a very shallow neck on my bass, and a body that has a medium feel. If you want to know what I'm talking about --> Go to the music store. Grab a bass from the rack, ask for a strap, and let them know that you want to walk around the store for about an hour with it on. I know, this seems kind of ridiculous, but man...some of these things can REALLY be HEAVY! So, with that spat out, I would like to introduce you to a couple of others: My own current bass -- a Washburn XB-200 -- plays like its ass is on fire! Easy glide frets, a great set of strings, good electronics (non-active) and a medium weight body. Sweet! The XB-400 is the same, but has active electronics in it. I'm just partial to non-active. [Please don't do some silly thread on active versus non-active now!!] Also, look at the Ibanez Basses. Many are very nice and play well. Bottom line -- go for what sounds good to you. If you have an amp already, I suggest you find the same kind at the store to play through, or bring yours. Remember, a bass can only sound as good as the sound is processed. Or something like that. You can't exactly jam on an Alembic through a GK amp and expect it to sound like a Foundation through a Peavey TNT amp. Doesn't work. Get the sound the way you want it to sound to YOU. Now...for the pedal effects... If not, check out any of the fine Level 42 websites created by our own digest members. They will have plenty of info regarding Holdsworth playing on the Guaranteed album, and even performing with the band for a series of shows. Ok Willem, I'll attempt to address your 'Napster' issues. Well, most folks here do look down on making copies of Mark's Trash albums, especially in light of the fact that he has released them himself, and doesn't stand to make a ton of money in this venture. However, keep in mind that while the digest has a little over 1,000 members, Napster can boast upwards of 1 million users. So I think it would unwise to assume that the mp3 files you found on Napster came from a digest member. Also, it's quite easy to give Napster access to all audio files on your hard drive, and perhaps those files were obtained by mistake. I make mp3 copies of ALL my L42 material, so I can easily play them at work, without bringing in tons of compact discs. Chris, i recall a band by the name of 52nd street. They had one or 2 minor dance hits here in NYC, and maybe the states. I wonder if this is the same band. The tune I recall was titled 'Cool as Ice', backed with 'Twice as nice'. I still have the 12 inch single. Please let me know, as I'd love to get ahold of a copy of that album. thats all, Winston ------------------------------ Subject: Question fot our Norway friends From: "Norman van den Wildenberg" Date: Tue, 6 Jun 2000 13:35:07 +0200 HI Levelheads I've bought a Norwegian Tape wich included Level 42 (to be with you again) It's a Pa Gang tape (nr 25) Is there someone who can gtranslate the text in it (will mail it to you) and tell me wich city the Skedsmohallen are.... Thanks so much. I greatly appreciate it. You guys are the Bass....er....bes= t!! Also, thanx to anyone else that I might have forgotten to mention. Based on everyone's recommendations, it looks like I might go with either the Fender Jazz or one of the Peavey basses. For all of you Billy Cobham fans out there, Wounded Bird Records will be reissuing on cd three more of Billy's solo releases from the seventies. The release date is set for July 25th. The scheduled releases are Life & Times, Inner Conflicts and The Billy Cobham/George Duke Band "Live On Tour In Europe". To the person who started the Sky Islands/Caldera thread....great topic! I highly recommend to all the good music lovers out there that you get your hands on any Caldera recordings that you can find. Although most of the individual members have gone on to their own measure of solo success (Jorge Strunz, Eddie Del Barrio and Alex Acuna in particular), Caldera's contributions to jazz fusion are (in my opinion) highly overlooked, and definitely worth checking out. I hope that Capitol Records has the good sense to reissue those albums on cd one day soon. Also, I just wanted to say a quick hi to Lolita (what up?). Thanks for your comments also. Seems like we both have similar musical tastes when it comes to good old, straight up funk. Long live da funk!! Take care everyone. I haven't written on the Digest for a long time but I keep reading the posts (when I can find a bit of spare time...). Someone asked on yesterday's post about Mike and Da Lata's concert at the Barbican on july the 16th... I'll probably go as well!!! I made some inquires with the box office and the answer was: "Da Lata will be performing a free concert from 1pm-7pm on the 16th. Booking is not required. This will be followed at 8pm by a concert with Margareth Manezes and Ile Aye. For this tickets range from £8.50 to £17.50. To book for this please phone us on 020 7638 8891 (daily 9am-8pm, bkg fee)". So the concert is free but, what do you think about them playing from 1 to 7 pm?... I guess it's just a mistake but wouldn't it be wonderful to listen to Mike for so many hours... I would go crazy!!! Hope to see some of you in London next month!! Adios!!!! I tend to agree, Sam. "The Ape" has a great groove, but weak-ass lyrics. Of course, at the risk of re-starting this old war, I think lyrics were often the weakest link in Level 42's chain. With many obvious exceptions, our boys were fantastic musos, but marginal lyricists. * * * * * > Now the saturdaynight of the NSJ is VERY interesting with (among > many others of course) Stanley Clarke, Diana Krall, Candy Dulfer, > Maceo Parker and The Brand New Heavies. Next to MK, he's the most phenomenal musician I've ever seen! * * * * * > The Fender Jazz is STILL the standard as far as bass sound is > concerned - especially for slap bass sound. Says who? And WHICH Fender Jazz? They make so many versions now, and they all sound different. In fact, good luck finding two identical Fenders which sound similar - no consistency in sound, 'cause there's no consistency in workmanship. 98% of all Fenders are crap, which is why I seldom utter the name "Fender" and instead substitute my affectionate nickname for them, the "Dreadful Abominations". Of course, there's always the slim chance you might find a sweet one. From: "Mike Giusti" Organization: The Magical Mayhem of Mike Giusti Date: Thu, 8 Jun 2000 11:09:53 -0700 Hello, Fellow Levelers! This is my first posting to the group. Although I have been a longtime fan of Level 42, I must admit that when it comes to American releases here in the good ol' US of A, we have been left somewhat in the dark. It has taken me many years to obtain the necessary music to be a true aficionado of L42 since the only major songs here can be counted on one hand and two fingers (Lessons in Love & Something About You). Other than that, most Americans don't even know who Level 42 is. Sad. Because we are not privy to most of Level 42's albums as they are either not accessible nor released (at least here on the West Coast), we also lack much of news concerning the band, etc. For instance, I don't even know if Level 42 is still together. All I know is that Mark and Mike have embarked on what look to be solo careers. Is the band still together? If not, more sad news... As far as basses go, my favorite was the Steinberger XL2A with its one piece graphite body and double ball strings. So easy and so beautiful to play. I had the awful incident of having it stolen en route to Europe from UPS! Never did I think twice about not having it insured (the reason for my being able to afford my current favorite, the Alembic Series 1 later on). The reason for my purchase of Alembic was that 1. Steinberger was purchased by Gibson (a company whose basses, I feel, leave something to be desired) and 2. the Alembic was the bass that most closely matched the sound I had found on the Steinberger. As far as starter basses go, my first bass was a Hohner (Steinberger licensed model), made of a one- piece wood body and double ball end strings. It's easy to play, and its sound is bright and warm at the same time. I also recommend a good Fender Jazz bass or Musicman Stingray as their sounds just can't be beat, and you will more than likely hold onto them for a long time as they are great for studio recording. Well, I think I've said enough. Thanks for listening, and it's nice to meet all of you! Who's shooting whose feet here? Once again, I'm afforded the opportunity to re-voice an opinion I've been spouting for years concerning this issue.... A free copy does not equate to a lost sale. I believe that very few people who might actually purchase a CD, decide to download the one song - or even copy an entire CD - instead of making the buy. If you really want an album, you also want the graphics, the box, etc. I download songs from Napster to learn them for my band. Since most of them are not artists I like anyway, I would not have bought the CD's under any circumstances. I'd sooner tape the songs from radio or borrow someone else's copy, so there's no sale lost. On the other hand, playing those songs in clubs promotes them, and contributes to legitimate CD sales. This is why I go ballistic every time I hear the RIAA say they lose X-millions of $$ annually to piracy. Whatever the figure they indicate, it's a bogus, bloated estimate, based on the assumption that every illegal copy is a lost sale. Why is it that bands like the Grateful Dead and Bela Fleck & the Flecktones allow taping at their concerts, yet it hasn't put them out of business? Quite the contrary, allowing concert-goers to make "legal bootlegs" simply fuels consumer interest. Those folks are proud and anxious to play those tapes for friends, which ultimately grows the fan-base. Say, don't we know something about this ourselves, hmmm? ;o) The record industry's business model is outdated. How many millions have they wasted trying to prop it up, lobbying congress with crazy copy-protection schemes (remember when they wanted to put a sonic notch in the middle of the spectrum for their proposed DAT copy-foibler?). The movie industry were certain that VHS rentals would end the theater business, and tried to stop it. As it turns out, they've made billions on tape rentals, which otherwise would not have happened. In fact, I think most experts today agree it was VHS that SAVED the movie industry! Finally, let's not forget that the record industry in America was built by the mafia, in the first place. It's kind of funny now to see them panicking as consumers "steal" from them! (Don't know what I'm on about? Read Fred Dannen's book Hit Men - it will change your whole view of the music biz.) Rant-mode off - Don Z. ------------------------------ Subject: Jamiroquai From: "Brian Flint" Date: Thu, 08 Jun 2000 16:57:41 PDT From what album and or single is the song "JUst Dance" from? Oh I'm sorry this isn't Jamiroquai digest. Please answer anyway One other thing occurred to me. Regarding the "What bass should I buy" discussion. You put rotosound strings on a fender and it sounds much different than on an Ibanez, but ernie ball on that same ibanez and it sound a lot different. Play a fender through a Trace and it sound a lot different than playing it through an SWR. So the MOST important thing you can get out of the bass it'self is feel. Granted anything under 200 bucks will probably fall apart in three years, but, if it feels good, the note sustains well and you are comfortable playing your style, then you can always replace the pickups, find different strings or use a different amp to get the sound you are looking for. When I bought a Level 42 import CD compilation at Tower in NYC in '97, I still had no idea if Level 42 had broken up in '95, and I've been a fan of theirs since 1980. Between Guaranteed and that remix CD, I never knew what they were up to. So, when I knew for sure that they were done, I stopped looking for their stuff. I knew about Forever Now, but didn't know they had actuall released it as a full album. I've only had it for about 3 weeks now, and I was pleasantly surprised. Sad there were no funky instrumentals, but I was happy to hear that their final work as a band was very "grown up" in sound. This Austrian CD of Forever Now has all the above-mentioned extra tracks, so I think I got my money's worth! As for Mark's One Man CD: I just can't say I enjoy it very much. As I was warned, it was a departure from the Level 42 standards, but that's to be expected. I've only listened to it once in 8 months.
