MIME means "Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions" and is a method of encoding non-ascii characters for transmission over email, which was only ever meant to carry ascii. The recipient's mail client then takes the encoded characters and turns them back into "special characters". This is useful for characters such as "#" (hash) and "£" (pound). A bit like a code. The key to the code is the line in the email header "Content-Type". It looks like the sender "garbage @ talk21.com" has an over zealous MIME setting that has converted each space character " " into "=20". The recipient did not understand the in-bound "Content-Type" value (or it wasn't included) and printed the encoded characters literally. You can stop scrolling now. I've just been listening to it again after a pretty long while, and I think it's a beautiful song. It's similar to the stuff Mark did on INFLUENCES. It may not be an easy song, it may be a weird song, but I think it's still very nice. Especially the part of Marks lines / voice. I stick with my choice of THREE WORDS. that song should never have been written. just thought I'd share my superfluous (yes I looked that one up) opinion on this with you all. You can get a great starter bass for under $300! I usually recommend the Peavey Foundation (http://www.peavey.com/mi/foundation.html) as an excellent first slapper. If you're going to buy a Dreadful Abomination (aka. Fender), do yourself a favor and get the Fender Squire P-Bass Special (http://www.fender.com/squier/index.html), with P-body, J-neck, and P-J pickups. It's also in the $300 range, and quite adequate to the task. But before you crucify Lemeiux, don't forget what Hatcher did to Arnott. I'm sorry that you guy's won't be able to repeat but it does make me very happy. See, I didn't mind Dallas winning the first time, but no team should win two in a row, in any sport. So, while you had bragging rights last year against the poor Sabre fan, your going to have to suck it up. And so far, good show, just don't complain about Calude TOO much. Next,Anthony, check out my post from yesterday, and be sure to buy a bass you have played. Fenders may be a big name, but in my case, I think it's got a real crappy feel and I hate playing it, my own opinion yes, but there are some high end basses out there that may have the same affect to you, make sure you don't spend money on a name. This is kind of a pre-North Sea Jazz festival that is held on various stages and cafe's/pubs/bars (or whatever you call them) in the city of The Hague, and one of the very nice things about it is that it's free :) ! Hey, I'm still Dutch we LOVE free stuff ;) ! Seriously: this was a bit of a point for me: Da Lata is playing at the friday night of the NSJ festival, and apart from them I can't say there were any other acts that I am very interested in. So I would have had to pay pretty much bucks for just the Da Lata gig (DFL 100 to be exact). Now the saturdaynight of the NSJ is VERY interesting with (among many others of course) Stanley Clarke, Diana Krall, Candy Dulfer, Maceo Parker and The Brand New Heavies. Now THAT is value for money ! But the alternative Da Lata gig for me was on this Saturdaynight (in Belgium). But now this dillema is solved by this extra gig on thursday night !! Any other Dutch digesters joining ?????????? I still have to find out what time and exatly what stage they will be playing. Really hope to get a chance to have a chat with Mike after or before the gig :)! On a different topic, can anyone tell me the arrangements for Mike's shows in London in July? I plan to attend the show in Barbican (London) on Sunday the 16th of July. I will want to try to meet Mike! :-) Roughly where in London is the Barbican? Anycase, do I need to book for the show? What form will the show be? Any more info anyone? BTW, for anyone that does not know this yet, the tour dates and venues are on www.mikelindup.com . Second topic - the filmed location of the Children Say video - where in Paris is that? I am going there soon and I plan to visit the place/buildings/street where it is shot, where Mark and Mike lingers around in the video. It is obviously close to the Eiffel but can anyone tell me the name of the place/street? And possibly how to get there? Children Say is one of my most favourite Level 42 songs and video. I want to visit the place in the video while listening to Children Say on my walkman. Possibly dance around a bit too and writing words on pieces of white cardboard. Hope the locals don't think I'm too nutty!! ;-) Thanks and see you all in London on the 16th July!!!! I was listening to their album the other day that I found in the back of the car. Very Loose ends-ish 80's type band. I think they had two or three top 80 "hits" and then disappeared off the face of the earth. Oh no, I've started thinking about Loose ends now, gonna have to find the albums.... I managed to get hold of an Austrian version of Forever Now at a recent fayre. It has 15 tracks and includes the album plus The bends, Play me, Past Lives, Heart on the Line (skeletal), Time will heal,& Learn to say no. Ive put it out on ebay.co.uk if anyone's interested as I have all the bonus tracks already. See you later guys My flies wide open........ They had four studio releases, but my favorite was "Sky Islands." Diane Reeves sang the song, and also did another version on her first CD (self-titled). In case you never heard of them, the band consisted of Jorge Strunz (guitar--DUH!), Steve Tavaglione (flute, et al), Eduardo del Barrio (piano), Mike Azevedo (percussion), Gregg Lee (bass), Luis Conte (congas), and Alex Acuna (drums). Their album "dreamer" was proclaimed the best jazz recording of 1979 by none other than the late Miles Davis. Sorry to say they are (thusfar) impossible to obtain on CD. I have been trying for years. Figured this was worth answering...Sorry for the limited L42 relativity. Having spent many, many years searching for a decent bass in the past, I hope I can save you a little time and that my suggestions might be useful. To those who may disagree with any of my ideas - Hey - it's a wide world out there, and this is a loaded question to answer. I'm sure we can all offer something useful, based on collective experiences. As for the chap who commented that he used the Washburn Status bass with some good results - I'd have to agree. I played on this some time ago, just to try it, and was impressed with the amount of hardware quality you get for the price. I suggest that you not forget the bargains you can find in used equipment. Is there someone who can go with you who might have a handle on the products to ignore? Sorry I'm not somewhere in NY, as I'd gladly lend you the time. A new pair of eyes, as it were, you know? Anyway - The Fender Jazz is STILL the standard as far as bass sound is concerned - especially for slap bass sound. I submit that you purchase the Jazz and add EMG pickups to it later, when you can afford them. This will offer the crispness of the Mark sound (albeit a little different than an Alembic or Status sound), while still affording the Rocco driving bass sound you referenced. The woods used in these sub $500 Fenders aren't quite the quality of the higher priced models, of course. But, they should, IMHO, provide a good stepping stone into the next model you purchase, after having gained a handle on the bass as an instrument. Ibanez has come out with some good product lately. I don't know that the models that fit into this category are within the price range you quoted, however. You might want to check into used Carvin and Peavy (Dyna-)Basses. Carvin's are, out of the box, or used, are very good bargains. I have played several, and each has been superior in workmanship and playability in comparison to those priced competitively. Again, my focus here is on the tonal qualities you wrote about. They have a solid, even tone, and can be perform very well with different gauges of strings. The Dyna-Bass should be a very reasonably priced used instrument, as they aren't made anymore. The circuitry is active and offers a dynamic tone for the price (especially the neck-through 5-strings!). Above all, I'd look for the following qualities: 1) I think it's easier to get the JD/Status/MKing tone with a "neck-through" bass, meaning the "body" of the is made up of "wings" glued to the neck of the bass, as it extends the entire length of the bass. These tend to have very good resonative qualities. 2) An ebony fretboard (or one of similarly dense material, such as a phenolic fretboard) lends to the crispness of the notes. Something like rosewood is generally used on cheaper instruments and "softens" the notes, kind of swallowing them a little, and/or rounding them a bit. 3) Active electronics will help you achieve the Mark King sound easier, as well. I don't know how much you know about preamping, etc. Most active pickups amplify the signal output of a vibrating string enough so that you can plug a pair of headphones into the output plug of the instrument and hear it fairly well all on its own! 4) Alder is a very bright sounding bass body wood (maple is as well, but not quite as much), and is also helpful in achieving the Mark sound... Very good luck on your search..... John Nix http://www.geocities.com/johnnix2000/bass.htm
