GREEN\(SED\)) Date: Mon, 05 Jun 2000 12:20:04 +0100 By way of an update. Blame Bill Gates. For issue 4 of Word Machine I decided to use Microsift Publisher instead of Word. To cut a long story short, 2 weeks and 18 pages into Words Machine 4 after about 40 hours of work my 36 Mb file corrupted and WOULD NOT LET ME ACCESS it at all and I tried everything. This all happened around a month ago and since then I have not had the incling to rejuvenate myself and re-do all my hard efforts. I am now looking at a release of Word Machine 4 in 2 months, it will be a bumper issue though. A proposition. I know nothing about the Mark King Fan Club at all, except that it was, and now it isn't. I have a suggestion though, if people are owed outstanding newsletters which they have paid for. Might I suggest that they be sent a copy of Word Machine 4. I would provide copies at cost price (possibly a misnomer there because I have not yet broken even on the first three issues). I am just thinking out loud here but, If people paid 12 pounds each, then I assume at least half of that is left? Thats 6 pounds (well, well, well) and I also assume that that money would have been spent as the remaining membership offers were fulfilled, then maybe it would be reasonable for those members to be provided with a copy of issue 4 which I would supply at say between 50% to 70% of the usual cost. This seems to me to be a way of fulfilling some obligations without actually having to do any work. At least then members would be getting something. I am aware that I could here be accused of profiteering but all I will say is if enough members of the fan club suggest that they be provided with issue 4 then perhpas something can be done and you will see something for your money (notice how he doesn't deny the profiteering suggestion - just puts up a smoke screen; but hey, what about this finishing sentence? Where does that leave your smoke screen theory!_.) Was on vacation and missed the discussion about Prefab Sprout ... what a great band they were (are). Jordan: The Comeback was easily one of the top 5 albums of the 90s, IMO. Andromeda Heights wasn't as good, probably because of a lack of Thomas Dolby production. God, Jesse James, and Elvis ... the Jordan album has it all ... Paul McCartney was once quoted (I believe in Rolling Stone) as saying Paddy Macloon (sp?) is a song-writing god. Paul is right. Somebody asked what the name meant ... I've never read an official explanation, but to me it seems some reference to a prefabricated housing explosion ... common sometimes in fast-growing areas of the U.S. ... but who knows for sure? Sorry for the non-L42 post ... but the Sprouts probably have a lot of fans on this digest. And they have something in common with L42 ... their record company never went all-out to sell them to a wider audience. Pity ... that's why most of us Americans never heard of them. My first experience with LEVEL 42 was around 1986 listening to their music on radion and asking myself this question:Who's playing those incredible bass lines ?(I'm a bass lover) so,I bought my first LEVEL 42 album around that time and for me they looked "weird" for a British band.Dressed in black suit and all.The bass player didn't have a funny hairdo and so on.For me,those guys mean serious music! 1987:Lucky me! they came in August(24-25) in a very small club in Montreal called Spectrum.(Not more than 800 persons can fit in this place)So,I went and TADA! I was at 3 feet away from Mark.I was gobsmacked!Phil was playing the drums. The original line up!I was totally impressed by their performance.I was HOOKED!. So, I joined the FanClub.I started to get others Fan Club members writing to me and me to them. Most of them became friends of mine and we visit each others.Friendship has developped through those years and it still is a strong bond. 1994:my first trip in England!I met other FanClub members.I went to the Brighton concert. Before the concert,I met Mark King.We had a very "cheeky" conversation and I've been kissed by him!which came as a total surprise for me!I didn't expect that at all. After the concert,I went backstage and I met the others. They were all so nice.Mike even sang for me and talked to me in French (my native tongue).WOW!I was at the Royal Albert Hall farewell concert.Sad and joyful moments at the same time!It was the occasion to meet all my overseas friends.A wonderful gathering.(I want to thank Ian Buck for what he did for me!"THANKS!IAN.") And the saga continues. My friends keep me posted with everything. My best friend is Dutch (Hi! Alexandra) and when I was in Holland,I even heard Mark King's music playing in Kinderdijk between windmills!I'm not kidding here. It's true.I can write a book about it.Maybe I will!Ha!Ha!Ha! I want to thank all my friends overseas(you know who you are)to have been so helpful.(Thanks Mark & Debbie)Sometimes,it feels very lonely here as a Levelhead. If there's Levelheads living "around the corner"(even from other provinces),I want your feedback. Do you go to the tour stop in here in sactown? On another note, everyone please, think of how important this digest is for your own survival in this world before you take it so seriously. Although I'm happy to see everyone giving forthcoming advice on which bass is great and which is not etc. I'd like to thro my two cents in. It's good to listen to all of us with our advice or what-not. Take it in at face value. I heard about all these basses that were the greatest basses etc. And I'm sure they are to certain people. For instance, back in '89 I spent 1200.00 on a Kubicki Factor. It's a nice bass to be sure, but after it was stolen, I bought a 300.00 SG400 by ibanez. I've love that bass from the day I bought it. The action is wonder full, the tone is perfect for switching between slapping and fingering, it's lightwieght, a much better feel than the Kubicki. So it's not always the money, or what Mark plays, or what anyone else plays. It's what works best with you. I'm not trying to dissuade anyone from giving there opinions. Just trying to point out a bit of the obvious, peace, Brian ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Subject: L42 crossword From: "Ronald Kuipers" Date: Mon, 5 Jun 2000 19:59:46 +0200 Hey Don Across 21; No way I can fill in HOLLAND or The Netherlands But it is the correct answer. The 80s commercialized all of them. All you have to do is listen to songs like Sun Goddess [my favorite song of all time, BTW] or Summer Madness by Kool & the Gang and the case is made. " Quite true my dear Lolita, quite true. Many people out there don't even know how serious all these cats where before the Eighties hit, and the evil, nasty record label execs forced our heroes to go by way of commercialism. This is especially true in regards to Kool & The Gang. Even begore "Jungle Boogie" hit the charts, these cats where blowin' some serious jazz funk. Who out there remembers funk show stoppers like "Who's Gonna Take The Weight" and "Let The Music Take Your Mind" ? Kool & The Gang's "The Best Of Kool & The Gang/1969-1976" (part of Mercury's "Funk Essentials" release) showcases this period beautifully. As we all know, Kool & The Gang then embarked on a highly successful (although commercial) career, due to the invaluable production asistance of former jazz keyboardist Eumir Deodato. Cameo's "The Best Of Cameo" (also part of the Funk Essentials collection) showcases Cameo's "big bad funk band sound" with songs like "Shake Your Pants" and the funk anthem "RigorMortis", and has already been mentioned in past digest as an invaluable funk cd to have in your collection. Mandrill's incredible r&b, funk, jazz and latin fusion can be best sampled on the 2 disc set "Fencewalk: The Anthology". I can remember groovin' to the sounds of "Hang Loose", "Fencewalk", "Mango Meat" and others as a teen growing up in the seventies. Mandrill's music might be described as a fusion of the music of bands such as Earth, Wind & Fire, Santana and at times Chicago or Tower Of Power. Likewise check the 2 cd Roy Ayers Anthology for essential tracks like "Everybody Loves The Sunshine", "Searchin'" and "Running Away". Acid jazz? Roy was doin' it way before the phrase was coined!! As far as Parliament/Funkadelic goes, what can I say? George Clinton's contributions to the sounds of electric funk are second to none. And what about the disciples of Funkenstein? Bootsy Collines, Cordell "Boogie" Mosson, Bernie Worrell, Eddie Hazel and many others helped us all to find the funk. Speakin' on the "funky bass wit da absence of slappin' and poopin' " thread, Paul Jackson (The Headhunters), Verdine White (Earth, Wind & Fire), Francis Rocco Prestia (Tower Of Power), Mark Adams (Slave) and Andrew Levy (The Brand New Heavies) are also members in good standing of this illustrious club along with Bootsy, Cordell and the other fabulous bassists previously mentioned. ***************************************************************************= ***************************** END OF NON LEVEL 42 CONTENT Like a beautiful and brilliant diamond, there are many wonderful facets of the world of funk that still await to be discovered, heard and experienced.= Level 42 is only but one of those brilliant facets.
