Hi Sarah, (and other digesters)

I was another one of those people who trustingly handed 12 pounds over to
that Richard bloke, only to be kept waiting and waiting for newsletters and
that promised badge. The poster he promised us was a bagly printed out A3
picture of Mark which arrived all folded up. The guy has no idea! All I can
say is: we've been conned and I will try and get my money back-any
suggestions anyone?-However I was really looking forward to that badge...

Also, is the 4th edition of Word Machine available yet?

her first, IMO] as well as Incognito favorites like Deep Water.  She is

This is definitely true.  I own the box set of three CDs, and the first
two feel completely different than the last one [although In The Stone has
the best opening of any song ever!].  I have a cousin ten years older than
me [I'm 32] and all he played when I was growing up was EWF, Parliment, Roy
Ayers, Cameo [when they had nine members instead of
three], Mandrill, etc. and all these groups were both funkier and
jazzier in their earlier 70s incarnations.  The 80s commercialized all
of them.  All you have to do is listen to songs like Sun Goddess [my
favorite song of all time, BTW] or Summer Madness by Kool & the Gang and
the case is made.  Sun Goddess is a jazzfunk song, period.  Ramsey Lewis
with EWF on that song to me epitomized the jazz connection.

As far as the slapping bass thread, there is definitely room for
bassists who don't slap.  Look at Randy Hope-Taylor from Incognito [now
with Jeff Beck I think].  He doesn't slap, he just moves all around the
bass in a way that is funky yet doesn't make you miss the slapping.  The
key to me is as long as the bassist is doing _something_ rather than the
same old thing its cool.  I love slap - Marcus is my man, and his fully
slapped Teen Town on Sun Don't Lie is a marvel - but its refreshing to
not have it sometimes.

Back in 1988 (or was it 1987?) I purchased a second-hand Washburn-Status (
mechanics by Status, body by Washburn), which, when played by my profane
hands, sounded practically like the original (i.e. bad). I remember paying
some 300$ for it, while the all-Status (= mechanics AND body made by Status)
would cost 3 or 4 times as much. Now that I have been slapping for 12 (or is
it 13?) years, I still fail to hear relevant difference. Maybe my slapping
is still crap, but otherwise this model may be a bargain for inexperienced
players.
