The best advice I've heard in ages, I've accompanied many a Trace Elliot purchase. Basic rules of thumb. i) play the bass without plugging it in - listen closely, are the acoustic notes you are playing, are they clear and ringing nicely. You'll know when it's good, it'll feel good. ii) Right plug it in and test the bass. Any major buzzes ? If it's active has the battery been changed etc etc Some guitars spend a lot of time in shops..... Walk under lights, tube lights and stuff and see if the bass buzzes badly, if it does get the nice repair man to check all the shielding in the inner workings. iii) If you decide to buy, get the shop to set the instrument up with a NEW set of strings. Your paying good cash, get good service. Thanks to Asha for sparking a great discussion topic! :) If you listen to Earth, Wind & Fire's first two releases on Warner Brothers, and all of their Columbia releases from "Last Days & Time" through "Gratitude", one can definitely hear that EWF's earlier music had a much heavier and distinctly jazzier flavor to it. That's not to say that subsequent EWF releases totally abandoned the jazz influences, but one can almost hear the record company executives saying (especially after the success of "That's The Way Of The World") that the band needed to develop a more commercially accessible sound (does this sound familar to anyone?). The direct parallel to this (and comparison in my opinion) would be the similarities in EWF's fantastic live release "Gratitude" and Level 42's "A Physical Presence". On both releases, both bands are definitely at the top of their improvisational powers, and are really stretching their creative boundaries and "going for it". Although I'm sure that some (or most) people might argue that EWF's most commercially successful releases came after Gratitude (which I can actually agree with), I believe that their most creative/jazzier output occured prior to and including the Gratitude release (similar to the music released by Level 42 from their debut release through A Physical Presence).= But anyway, that's just my two cents worth........... On another note, I think latin music lovers everywhere (including the fellas in Level 42, given their earlier use of latin rhythms) are mourning the passing of "El Rey" and the undisputed "Maestro of the Timbales", Tito Puente. When a legend of this magnitude passes on, surely a huge void is left in the music world. Vaya con Dios Tito. You shall surely be missed! That's all for now. Take care everyone. Don't forget to make somebody happy, and as always........ Keep it funky! These two groups are just the best! I actually got a chill up my spine, Joey when you mentioned the song "Dream Crazy" and the similarities between the voices and how they work to complement each other. Also, there are times when both groups will use what I call "fuzzy-sound song enhancers" to fill in the gaps for voices where no words would really be appropriate: as in the song by EWF called "Can't Hide Love": ACTUAL LYRICS FUZZY ENHANCERS You want my love and you can't deny You know it's true but you try to hide, yeah! You turn down love like it's really bad (yow!) You can't give what you've never had, yeah! Well bless your soul you can fool a few... (hoo! hoo!) But I know the truth now so do you... (harou! harou!) The immediate song that comes to mind for Level42's venture into "fuzzy enhancers" is "Physical Presence". At the end of the chorus right before the part where they're singing about "It's not what she did, it's the way that she did it..." there is unmistakable use of enhancers. There is that strange keyboard playing that sounds like snake charming music and then three sounds that couldn't possibly be words: "harou! harou! harou!" I love those improvisions! I think they help make songs distinct! Asha p.s. Bilal, thank you for the link and the compliment about my name!:) Joey, bass-playing in the song "Funkentelechy" has haunted me on many a boring schoolday throughout the years of my childhood. I know I’m not supposed to advertise on the Digest (sorry!) but I have now started to build a range of custom basses with a mate so if anyone wants any information etc, please get in touch! As far as the question of which bass to start on is concerned – if a bass has a decent, warp free neck, a decent set-up should enable satisfactory playability – as regards Westones, on the most part they are great basses, I have one in my collection, a Thunder IIIA and it performs very well - and it was £120!!!. I have played some very inexpensive basses in the past and have found that they can provide good results with a set-up – its not always the most expensive bass that equates to the best playability (but sometimes it does help!!). The news on the street is that Mark is having 2 new GB basses put together.....incidentally, the Bass Centre (Wapping) has a lovely 4 stringer in at present! Texas Level Round-Up VI (Fall 2000)   COMING SOON

WATCH FOR MORE INFORMATION AND DATES & TIMES, NEXT WEEK

Douglas Adams hitches a new ride

Hitchhiker's Guide: Richard Vernon and Simon Jones in the original series By BBC News Online's Chris Charles When Douglas Adams gazed up at the stars one drunken evening and dreamed up the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, little did he think it would become a reality. But, thanks to rapid advances in electronic technology, his fantasy of holding the secrets of the universe in the palm of your hand is taking shape.

In the book, The Guide is a portable device that can tell you anything you want to know about wherever you are. Adams' h2g2.com website invites users to give their views on "life, the universe and everything" as they experience it by punching in the details their PCs, or on mobile phones using Wap (wireless application protocol) technology. The 47-year-old author, who is also working on a Hitchhiker's movie, is clearly excited by the project. "Any information you want to put in to h2g2 goes in with the context of where you are," he says.

20 years on, and planning the Hitchhiker's movie

"For instance, if you're sitting in a café anywhere in the world, you can type in 'this coffee is lousy', and it suddenly becomes a significant piece of information to somebody else." Adams admits the speed of events has taken him by surprise. "When I first devised the whole notion of this little device 21 years ago, I didn't think I was being a predictive science fiction writer - it was just a silly idea." In fact, the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy had embedded itself in his brain long before that. "I was hitch-hiking around Europe in 1971, when I was 18, with this copy of A Hitchhiker's Guide to Europe," he recalls. Drunk "At one point I found myself lying in the middle of a field, a little bit drunk, when it occurred to me that somebody should write a Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. It didn't occur to me that it might actually be me years later."

Alive and well online: Mark Wing-Davey as Zaphod Beeblebrox
That "silly idea" has since gone on to be a cult radio and television series and Adams is busy helping it on to its next logical step - Hollywood. "Everything is moving slowly, but doggedly forward," he says. "There's been a bit of a logjam where we try to sort out what goes where, but it's getting there." Will the film deviate dramatically from the book, the radio play and the TV show? "Every time I've been through it, I've changed it quite a lot, and this time is no exception. "The story was written as an excuse for lots of different things to happen, a bit like a sketch show, but for a movie you've got to have a story arc.
Views on life, the universe... and coffee
"As a result, there will be a lot of new stuff, but all the key stuff people will be looking for Zaphod, Prefect, Arthur, will be there," he promises. The film has not been cast yet, but it is unlikely the actors from the TV series will be asked to resume their roles, due to the passage of time between the two pro jects. But with Austin Powers director Jay Roach at the helm, the movie, when it is finally completed, is set to be every bit as zany as you would expect. In the meantime, fans will have to be content with creating their own Guide, via Adams' h2g2 site - but will it come to the same conclusion as its author, that the ultimate answer to life, the universe and everything is...42? Adams bellows with laughter at the very thought of it. "Oh dear, I think I disappointed a lot of people with that. They must have been expecting this great, profound piece of genius, but I screwed them!"

Steely Dan takes me back to my childhood in the early '70's when they always make a 4-year old kid like me get mellow and groovy - and they still do! I think that slapping is actually more "overdone" than overrated. I've seen so many Flea and Les Claypool wannabes here in H-Town who think that slapping is all you need to be a good funk bassist, and I just laugh. These are the same cats who couldn't do a walking bassline or finger-style groove to save their lives. Some of the funkiest basslines ever aren't slapped. >> "Overdone" is probably a better word! Sure, too many out there who over-slap and try to copy Les and Flea; slapping forever does NOT a good bass player make! But, this was more for the guy learning bass. Man, I would KILL to play like Mark King or Les Claypool or Michael Manring or Bootsy, but I'll say again: you gotta start with the slow and booooring basics, no matter how much you want to bust out like Mark or whoever. That includes doing boring old scales, walking pentatonic scales, etc. Then, once you master all that, start branching out! After not playing for six years, I have to essentially start over with my books and doing scales or whatever - I'll slap and pop for fun, but only in the confines of strengthening my old music theory. A good example of finger-style playing is Jaco, who didn't slap and pop all the time, either. Listen to "Tune Town". L42's "The Chinese Way" is an amazing bass line that is really the song's melody and bass together! THAT's the way to maximize the bass guitar, I think. And Bootsy sure does go WAY back! He didn't slap-n-pop much, but yeah: he WORKED that bass with love! Still does, too! But I mentioned before in the Digest about strumming chords, as Mark did occasionally. That's another great style or technique that many good bassists don't try often. Les Claypool does it best from what I hear -- I wouldn't mind being a Les or Mark wanna-be at all! Shoot, I remember seeing Primus play in the basement in Cloyne Court co-op in Berkeley in the late '80's and early '90s. They just rocked! When it was put to him that some of his recordings (esp. on 'Influences') were inpossible to do in real time, he laughed, picked up his bass and played them, live, and proved everybody wrong. He also said, at that time, that he would never record bass lines that he could not reproduce live, in real time.My bass teacher gave me a copy of the tape.
