I found this interesting because there are similar aspects of both Level 42 and EWF which endeared me to each group even before I fell privy to this information. I was wondering if there were other Level-heads out there that share my joy in listening to Earth, Wind and Fire, and if so, what is it that you like about the two groups, and if you draw any similarities. Asha ------------------------------ Subject: ESPN Reference From: Tim Wiley Date: Wed, 31 May 2000 08:35:27 -0400 I did not see this myself, and I'm not sure if it was already mentioned, but apparently Level 42 and Mark were mentioned on ESPN - the all sports station. A friend of mine said that an announcer mentioned the band during a highlight of a game. He didn't remember the specific game but it went basically like this: Shaquille O'Neal is to the Lakers what Mark King is to Level 42. As I said, I didn't hear this myself, but I have heard this announcer use 80's bands as references for other highlights. Just to forewarn everybody. I did make > that request back in digest # 97 (obligatory Level 42 content) Hi Eric, I'd be happy to answer this. I've never attended a Level-fest, but I've seen plenty of them get arranged and read reports of them. A Level-fest is a gathering of Level 42 fans. For example, there have been Level-fests in Texas and in England (the two that come to mind immediately. There have been others.) Usually a Digest member will arrange for activities for people to do while they are there. It usually starts out with something like "hey, are there any other Level 42 fans in that would like to get together on ?" There have been many positive reports given after Level-fests where people enjoyed themselves immensely. In fact, a particular Level-fest was made to the Isle of Wight (hope I spelled that correctly) and Mark King himself made a surprise appearance. Many of us were green with envy when we heard about that. > Micheal Monsen, you are forcing me to digress, but here goes: I understand--I initiated this publicly, so it should also be closed publicly. It's amazing how a good night's rest can change your perspective. I am sure I did have you wrong. I have to admit that I took it upon myself to judge what kind of person you are, and that's wrong. Nobody should do that. Please accept my apology. > 2) Richard Menditta and James Ross expressed a similar point of view to mine > in Digest # 95. I could go on and on about how things can be taken wrong in a written medium like this (and I am not immune to it at all, as you saw with my message to Eric G. yesterday.) Suffice it to say that I think a lot of people take AG's posts way too seriously. Oh, what the heck, I'll look it up and paste it here. This comes from our good friend Loz, on Fri 26 Apr 1996: "Three Words was originated as a demo called 'Three Words From You'. It was once a part of the album 'Staring At The Sun' but when the band let record company, friends etc hear the album apparently everyone loved the album but thought the song wasnt good enough so it was removed. It appeared on the B-side of the tracie single entitled just, 'Three words'." > Don't worry about not knowing what "apophasis " means. You still have > better English than most English people!! On this appearance, I must say that the band seem to be gelling together quiet nicely. The band consists of the one and only Mr Mike Lindup (keyboards, bongo drums and vocals) Roland Chadwick (guitar) Tabafa LaBeck (vocals) and a new member Nicole (bass). Nicole's playing added a bit more to the overall sound and considering he only joined the band the day before the gig seems to me outstanding. Out of all the tracks performed my favourite is 'Magical Day.' This song is about a day Mike had last August, a story well told by Mike. Mike's musical talents is not only on the keyboards he does also hit a mean bongo drum. To me on this performance, Mike proves he still has alot left in the tank. He also shows there is more to his talent than just being in Level 42. Level 42 was not ruled by thumb alone. To me Mike is maturing as a musician by expressing other avenues of his musical talent. It will be an experience to see Mike singing in Portuguese with De Lata on the road. Hope to see the familiar faces when Mike does the Jazz Cafe in Camden Town. Mike has 2 projects at the moment. The 'Post Pop Federation' and 'De Lata.' Check out all the latest info from Mike's official website MIKELINDUP.COM. Pretty well any old bass should be acceptable for slapping if reasonably set up - The question may be what preconceptions you have of how slap should sound. If you are expecting to get the classic MK type slap sound, the Westone may not have the tonal characteristics to produce it (it wouldn't be my choice for slap work either) but that doesn't mean it isn't any use for it. You may end up with a heavier tone (like say Tony Levin) and that might be just your cup of tea. Also, I put up with some fret buzz, I find I need a very low action for a good slap feel - and if carefully controlled, the buzz can be added by the degree of attack you use, and this can allow you to control how aggressive a slap (or plucked) sound you have. If, however, it buzzes even when gently plucked, then it probably does need setting up. > >I once asked the KING himself at the end of a gig - what guitar was best for >starting with, he told me a status, but alas too far from my price rangs. It's as if Sinatra, Gershwin, Mercer & Riddle all rose from their graves in 1997 and said "while we're up, why not knock out another album for old times sake. (Apologies to Riddle if it turns out he's not dead yet!) >Subject: >From: "chris doney" >I would use the digest to discuss my favourites, but I can do without the >stress!!!!! See what you people have done - this man just wants to talk about Level 42, and even he's afraid to. >p.s. anyone know where I can get an "Eric Vs Andrew" T shirt? Like AG, I fear you'll have to invest in a season ticket. >Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V2000 #98 >From: JFalcon69 @ aol.com >please discontinue my digest. That's gotta hurt. There should be loads of Level 42 vinyl and CDs to pick through. Happy hunting. Any other Brummie L42 fans e-mail me. I'd like to know what everyones best L42 moment has been. Mine was meeting Mark and Mike at a Radio station in Sheffield UK when they were promoting Forever Now. Myself and 3 other fans were able to chat for about half an hour before they went into the studio for their interview. We took loads of photos and had a great laugh. The guys were so obliging, a rare quality in the music stars of toady. Keep Funkin' Brian. ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Subject: De Lata From: "Norman van den Wildenberg" Date: Thu, 1 Jun 2000 01:11:45 +0200 Hi levelheads, surfing the Web I discovered this 1998 CD: De Lata - Pra Manha (Moving pictures) Anyone know this one?? ------------------------------ Subject: mission impossible From: Savagerush @ aol.com Date: Thu, 1 Jun 2000 03:26:51 EDT That reference... I almost broke out laughing, for a good reason in this case, when I saw the 42 reference you spoke of. :) Pretty cool...the Matrix only had the 41st floor in it. Other than that, the movie blew....
