This DOES have the same cover as the US World Machine SINGLE. But in your post Norman you didn't say whether you meant same as the World machine LP cover or Single cover. I have checked Lazlos discog. I think the item you have is the same as the one he states as the UK 12". L()Z ------------------------------ Subject: From: "John Moffatt" Date: Thu, 02 Mar 2000 04:11:34 PST As far as Mark/Mike vocals go, I think one of my favourites has got to be Lying Still and the bit where it goes "The future disolves through......". It was a real shame that this wasn't a single, perhaps as a double A side with "World Machine", an awesome track in my humble opinion. On another thread, I have just rediscovered "Flying on the Wings of Love" on the remix album. It was a track I used to skip, but recently I couldn't be bothered to get up and listened to it, then listened to it again, and then again. Great track, and it shows the direction L42 could have gone in. Just ordered the "Live at the JC" CD, so I am waiting by my post box. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Subject: Vocal ranges and falsetto From: KNAPPT @ ldcorp.com (KNAPPT) Date: Thu, 2 Mar 2000 08:50:05 -0500 >>When I said Mike's voice went all the way from bass (or baritone) to >falsetto, perhaps a better word would have been countertenor. I could just be talking through a hole >in my head... >Ciao fer now >Ann Actually, falsetto is a part of your range and good singers are those you have completely smoothed the transition so that in the case of an ascending scale the transition takes place as early as possible and on the descending scale as late as possible. Also, the thicker and richer the falsetto, the better. Mike sings in falsetto sometimes also and it sounds so good because he has managed, or is genetically suited to have his falsetto sound very close to his true voice. In any case, Mark is a baritone, as the range of your voice is defined by interval and the clasification of bass, baritone, tenor, and conter-tenor is not a range classification, but a voice type. In other words, the section of a range where the voice most naturally falls and has the most resonant quality. I have a low bass range, but am a baritone not because I can not hit the notes, but because the sound of my voice resonates at a higher frequency and the sound quality of my low notes is not that of a bass singer (here is where take 6 is a good example) I forget the bass singers name, but that is a rich, full bass sound. He can sing high also, but without the same quality he has down low. And let's also remeber that the difference in actual range between a tenor and bass (when writing music ) is only a fourth or so (I forget exactly as I have not done this since college) (for no musicians, a fourth is the first two notes of the mexican hat dance) But what the hell do I know? I could just be talking through a hole in my head... Best theron ------------------------------ Subject: hmm, what is the subject... People love to throw money at instruments to raise the level of their status. All I wanted when I was in High School was a Phil Kubicki Factor Bass ($1800.00) When I finally got one I was in heaven, it's a wonderful bass, no doubt, but (Important point here) IT DIDN'T MAKE ME ANY BETTER!!! 4 years ago it was stolen and I've wanted to replace it with an equally well known and pricy bass. In the mean time I bought a Sound Gear SG400 $250.00 It's the best bass I've ever owned, it's got a wonderful fretboard, excellent action, full, enduring sound.......No way I'm replacing that baby, it's got four years of hard playing and Ive never been happier. So don't go for a bass because mark played it or it's expensive, go for it because it fits your style. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Subject: Level availability in Toronto From: alex.friesen @ sickkids.on.ca Date: Thu, 2 Mar 2000 12:39:02 -0500 >From: james ross >I would like to here some of their old solo work >if anybody can enlighten me on how to get it I would >be thankfull since here in TO we never seemed to have >gotten anything in regards to solo work, James, check out the flagship HMV and Sam's on Yonge. Anyway, onto brighter things. Thanks for the info dave, but I'm not some layman who just thinks 'ooh expensive wood - good bass', I'm down on a degree course in Design Tech (Awe struck silence.....), and I feel woods such as cocobola, are capable of looking superb when finished. I agree with you totally though mate, about the general opinion, it can be if any product in general is fitted with expensive timber, then it is good quality. As we know this is DEFINATLY not always the case. Thanks for the info though, I've got some bass queries I'll be mailing you with if thats ok. On another sad note, just found out Bassist is finishing production and integrating with guitarist. I took a look at an old guitarist mag (about 10 years), and was pretty disturbed at the lack of bass coverage....... True about John, Gary and co. I've been checking out my Jamiroquai albums and found them in the credits which I was happy to see. About Phil, I agree with you, he can be very flirty and controlled on drums and adds a really nice flowing feel, not that Gary doesn't - he's really cool as well. Anyway, on to what I'm wanting to know, (if that makes sense!!!!!) Unreached Levels I beleive these are CD's that contain previously unheard or remixed LFT tracks. Where can I get a copy from, and the lowest available price of course, as I had heared people have paid 'silly' money for these. LFT Autobiography Think I once heard that Loz had some copies of this book still available. How much? I want a copy. Andreas Johnson Apparently this guy recently had a song in the British top 10. I had heard from a mate where I work that 'yours truly', MK had played Bass on this track. Can anyone confirm this??? Last One A while back, whilst visiting one of the many LFT web sites, I saw that a new LFT Comilation CD was due to be, or had been released but only in, I think, Holland. Now, for the life of me, I cant remember what it was called, what label it was on, and what bloody web site I saw this on. Bearing in mind this was before the digest went 'offline'! If anyone, anyone at all knows any of the answers I am seeking, please let me know, either via the digest or by mailing me private. Ta Just before I go, just thought I'd mention that I picked up a copy of the FOREVER NOW Resurgence CD. There's a few tracks on there that I have never heared before and thought they were quite good. Nuff said John ------------------------------ Subject: Fw: Level42 Digest V2000 #8 From: "Nick Owen" Date: Thu, 2 Mar 2000 21:13:23 -0000 Dear friends, Another newcomer , but I've been reading with interest for at least 6 months. Having returned from recent trips to Johannesburg, Los Angeles and Paris I was amazed to read all the current discussions. I've been a fan of L42 since the Thunderthumbs and the TTMN days and in the early 80's attended the Royal Northern Colledge of Music in Manchester, UK where I met Dave Adams (perscussionist) and one of Mikes' closest Friends, after seeing the band live for the first time at the Students Union in 82/83 supported by Funksters Pzazz I was hooked for life. Since then I've met the chaps on several occasions at various industry bashes and gigs. I read that Mark plays Bernie Goodfellow basses these days, I know Bernie and have for many years, I called an old friend who's currently on tour with Tricky and also an old friend of BG, he confirmed it. For those interested Bernie was the brains behind Goodfellow and Nightingale basses but after getting shafted by the corporate manufacturing machine now handbuilds custom basses from the basement of Gig Sounds, a music shop in Streatham, South London. I played sax many times with Bernie in my gigging days including a charity gig with Boon and Bernie for the children of Romania shortly after Boon and Phil left L42. I could tell you a few funny stories about Bernie, including the one where Bernie played on the Billy Cobham band world tour ...well, not quite...! (in fact it was nothing more than a jam together on a booth at the NAMM music show in LA, but by the time it was chinese whispered back to the UK, Bernie has been on a world tour...this was a scream because later in the year he was invited to play with the cabaret band at a music show industry party and was introduced as Billy Cobhams bassist, Bernie who was pissed at a rat, staggered up on stage in front of the UK music industry and slapped away for 5 minutes in completely the wrong key and only realised what was happening when the whole band had left the stage for a break and he was the only one playing. Funnily enough, I first heard BMK's "One last Cry" in a hotel room in Singapore 6 or so years ago , I was hooked straight away , then I came back from the trip to find my wife had buggered off with some hockey player..core I ask ya!! Seriously, I am yet to see him live, and hope he's in the UK some time soon.. great voice, great music respect 2ya. I hope to keep in touch during my travels with more Industry gos!! I'm particularly proud as my name came before such worthies as Andre, Morgan and the 'other' Eric. May I just say that myself, my other aliases of Karen and Loopy wish you well in your new life and that we collectively will complain bitterly if I see 'that' pic of me any new site of yours, as I'm hoping to see it first on Crimewatch (I'm in the 'Car Boot sale' scene). However, I'll warn you now, that if you mention my fan club/car boot sale in a bad light, I'll get shirty and lock myself in my bedroom with only my life size posters and man size box of tissues ( the one's with that soothing balm impregnated in it...mmm) for comfort. In fact I might not keep this up at all, as I took Clare Reeves advice and have managed to meet and take pictures of my hero's arse. Let me just say, it was a total let down, it didn't look anything like what I saw in the videos and posters, and I now feel downhearted by the whole thing. Let me just say, sometimes meeting your hero's arse in the flesh isn't all it's 'cracked' up to be. ;-) Anyway, on a more serious note can someone say what is happening with Mr King ? He has sold Joe Daflos, put out a (IMO poorly produced) live album quicker than Live Aid did, and is scraping up the dribs and drabs from his studio floor and selling that as well......is there something I should be reading into this ? Without wishing to pry too much (but I will anyway), is Mark short of money ? or is he trying to get enough money to retire that little bit earlier ? Does he need that extra money ? If he needs to recoup any losses made on the One Man tour, why doesn't he push Polydor to get the Re-issues out - too much longer and Polydor will miss the boat - after all, how many people have seen a Val Doonican digitally remastered remix album.......(no the Bucketheads haven't heard of him, perhaps N-dre should get to know Val ! - N-dre doing 'Cockles and Mussels') One last point, I must agree with Tim W, Forever Now is a more polished item (especially the Resurgence album) than the preceding 'Guaranteed'. Mind you, it's not surprising, we almost had a 'full set' of L42 working on it, including Wally, with only Boon missing. For all their personal differences, collectively they are a very creative force, and make for quite a powerful mix....and that is why musically, lyrically and emotionally(except fro Lasso the Moon maybe) FN will always be better than Guaranteed..... Just a few opinions.... I love both their voices. Mark puts in some really nice riffs in his songs that fit just right. One of my all time favorites is the end of To Be With You Again where he says 'who can break these chains'. That line is unbelievably soulful. I remember the first time I listened to the CD Changes - I literally got the shivers. All of the vocal arrangements, background and lead, are simply stunning. The beginning of the song Changes is unreal. Maybe because I am partial to layered vocals due to my a capella background, that is what I pay attention to. The CD with the best vocal arrangements all around is World Machine, with Lying Still being the best IMO. I suppose since I redid the song and did all the vocals myself I have a healthy respect for how much went into it - I had to do five tracks of vocals! What makes them so great as a duo is that their vocal ranges are complementary, which makes the transitions between the two so much more interesting. I always like it when Mark sings a verse, Mike sings the bridge, and they sing the chorus together. A match made in heaven. Also, never forget the fact that Mark should be commended for his ability to sing so well and play the bass at the same time. That is no small feat. Out of all the singing bassists out there, he combines them both the best. I love Marcus Miller's bass playing, but he is not the best singer. Same with MeShell NdegeOcello. Please don't flame me - I own all of the CDs by both these players and have seen them live multiple times; I am a huge fan, but I don't go to these shows to hear their vocals. I like their songs and love their bass playing - the vocals are last on my list for them. Not so with Mark. Thanks to all who straightened me out on Take 6 - I always thought Claude sang bass. My bad. I suppose I wouldn't know that Brian did anything with them because once they decided to do songs with instruments I stopped buying their CDs. They have such raw talent that they don't and never will need instruments, and the few songs I heard that included them buried a lot of the subtle nuances to their voices so I boycotted. The last CD I bought was So Much to Say. I know they have gone back to pure a capella singing, but I am satisfied with the CDs of theirs that I have. Maybe I'll pick up their last one. Any Steely Dan fans [of which I know there are many on this Digest] GO BUY THE NEW CD!!! You won't be disappointed. It is awesome. It approaches the engineering level of Aja, which is still my #1 engineered CD of all time, and the tunes are very good. I particularly like Gaslight Alley and Jack of Speed. Also, they will be the musical guests on Letterman Friday night for those of you who want to catch one of the songs before plunking down your money. Later!!
