I have often thought of going across the big pond to see them, but I waited too long. My question is this, can anyone tell me if Mark is touring with his band now, and if there is a schedule for touring in the united states.... if not in the U.S. , then this time I will fly to wherever HE IS....addicted in chicago....Dr. B. ------------------------------ Subject: Drum Tracks From: "Lisa Devlin" Date: Sat, 9 Jan 1999 15:20:37 -0000 Hi everyone, While we are on the subject of great Level 42 drum tracks, I'd put my vote down as the Sunbed Song..... 3 weeks to go till Shepherds Bush!!! :) lisa ICQ# 14616790...chat me ------------------------------ Subject: Subject: you are wrong about Quetzalcoatl! Bannerman ------------------------------ Subject: Britfunk, Drummers From: Dave Mock Date: Sat, 9 Jan 1999 12:52:10 -0800 (PST) Hey, Micro-Kids: Insightful comments in the last Digest re the "White Funk" and "Britfunk" terms. In the States, you could bring up the same issue regarding blue-eyed or white soul, which also has one act virtually identified it, my childhood faves Hall and Oates. Some cultural critics here also use it as a term of derision against Daryl and John (especially Nelson George), especially since they've mixed their soul influences with rock, and it drives some of them batty that songs like "I Can't Go For That" and "Out of Touch" scored so well with black audiences. As with L42, some people...including record companies...sought to pigeonhole H and O rather than its using of common influences. At least Daryl and John got a chance to succeed. There's no logical reason why L42 shouldn't have been able to do similarly. "Standing In the Light" and the punk-soul "True Colours" would have scored even more Stateside if Polydor's U-S people realized what it had...especially at a time (mid 80s) where people could hear Def Leppard, Grandmaster Flash, Billy Joel and Rufus on the same hit radio stations. Re drummers' best tracks: I'd add (for Phil) his driving work on the title cut of "The Pursuit of Accidents;" "A Floating Life" from "True Colours," and his tasteful work on "Lying Still" from "World Machine." Gary's work is a little hard hitting, but he still shines on the moving "Kinder Eye" and "With A Little Love." It's too bad that "Overtime," a song I enjoyed, wasn't better written; it would have added to the polished production. The Average White Band springs to mind as a band frequently mistaken as black American musicians, however they originated in Scotland and as the name suggests (as with the White Funky), the musicians are white, and anything but average. Can't think of anyone else of the top of my head. Si ------------------------------ Subject: testing 1 2 3 From: "Inzo" Date: Sat, 9 Jan 1999 13:41:59 -0800 Return of the Handsome Rugged Man and Sandstorm has great drumming. A friend from England brought over Mark's new solo album. Another friend and myself who are huge Level fans think it's horrible. I don't know what you'all are talking about. Just because it's Mark King doesn't mean it's good. The guy's gone looney. That album is like Running in the Family but even more pleasant or something. He's forgotten about making up cool sounding basslines and using cool bass' and he's trying to make good music and it's not working. Sorry, I'm listing to the Physical Presence right now, and THAT is Mark King. I don't want to see him live now, not if he's going to play that sissy stuff. This album isn't going to grow on me either. Out of One Man, Changes and Tin Man. Boon's album is the best. The only good thing about Influences is the bass solo in the first song. The downfall of Level 42 since Running in the Family clearly shows one thing. PHIL GOULD WAS LEVEL 42! I want a Phil Gould solo album. He's my hero! I love Level 42 but One Man sucks and I'm surprised so many of you like it. I just picked up two12" singles. I found Out of Sight Out of Mind and Weave You Spell for about 3 bucks each. I have Are You Hearing What I Hear. I'm here if anyone is selling other's, 1981-1984 only. ------------------------------ Subject: Boon Conspiracy? From: "Dan Nesselroth" Date: Sat, 09 Jan 1999 14:28:20 PST I have always had a funny idea that I could not shake, regarding Boon's appearances in the "Running in the Family" videos. Let us remember, that was a time in which both Phil and Boon were getting antsy about being in L42. Phil was pissed at polydor and felt the band had sold out....Boon was mentally exhausted from the tour. Just listen to some of the lyrics he had written for "World Machine" and "Running in the Family" in those years...he was always sad, but now he needed a sabbatical for his health and well being. After the production and tour of "Running in the Family", Boon and Phil were gone. The post-album stuff, such as the "Children Say" EP and video are obviously missing Phil and Boon. I remember feeling L42 was only Mark and Mike in that year. But in the videos for "To be with You Again", "Lessons In Love" and "It's Over" Boon is decidedly UN-boon! Boon is a kind of skinny guy..tall, but not towering. Let us look at the "Boon" in those videos. He is always wearing the same things. In all the videos. BIG mirrored sunglasses that cover much of his face. Stubble that shadows his facial features. A big over-coat that hides his general body shape. I belive it is NOT Boon at all. I think Boon was already resting at home or in some hospital, and the band did not want it public on the heels of "Running in the Family"....By the "Children Say" shoot they had gotten everything out of the release that they could. Pushing "Children Say" was the final aspect of the "Running in the Family" work. Boon and Phil are gone. I think the "Boon" in those videos is an imposter!!!!! ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Subject: Re 'Changing The Guard' From: Zak Date: Sat, 9 Jan 99 18:32:59 -0800 On 1/9/99 3:00 AM, Bill Miller doodled: >my own personal feeling is that this >song is arguably the most commercially viable 'hit' out of all the songs >on the album I personally think Love Wars is the most "commercial-sounding" song on the album.
